I just tried to post this in the 'about this site' area but it said mods only so it's here instead. This may have been covered elsewhere but I can't find any info.
Is this forum being attacked DOS style or is there an issue with the number of requests the Dbase can handle as I'm getting regular page hangs, failed pages and just general delays.
It seems not to matter what time you access. I also just tried accessing a handful of other sites to see if it was local to me or NTLs [mine] network but it isn't.
I mention the possible hacking thing as I'm sure this forum has been far busier in the past than now. Maybe it's not and fewer people are posting more topics? I don't know. Just thought I'd see if I was the only one getting this. _________________ http://exopolitics.org.uk

It's variable and is largely down to the host's server performance.

I've had quite a few SQL access error pages the past couple of days too.
Didn't think to note the error codes before hitting refresh though.

I've been getting the same problems but we have enough web space, loads of bandwidth, tons of database resources, so eveything should be running fine. There isn't enough traffic coming here for a DOS attack, and even if it was a DOS attack the host will most likely throttle the number of visits to a manageable amount - way more than we are getting at the moment.
I've had a look at the cpanel and everything is as it should be. Nobody has messed around with the database settings or made any changes in there.
As Andrew says, it comes down to server performance, which at the moment is lacking (of course the host will never admit it). All hosts have periods when performance isn't up to scratch.
We could optimise the mysql query tables to see if that improves things, if the problems don't go away I think this should be our next step. _________________ RINF Alternative News and Media

These problems do occur with shared hosting ... give it some time to see if the problem is more persistent. If so, you can always contact the support services via the chat facility and report the problem. The support response times are in the order of minutes using the chat service. You won't get better than that ...
The (clustered/load balanced) web servers are less likely to be the source of the problem as they are load balanced. The most likely cause of this problem is the database server being overloaded - the SQL errors are an indicator of that. This is a factor of shared resource use. PW support will check the database server and kick off any high load threads/users or bounce the database if there are more severe problems (much less likely.) |

This problem doesn't seem to be improving, it's getting worse.
Access times are diabolical.
I was just looking at a thread, clicked the back button and got this error:
Quote: | Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Can't create a new thread (errno 11); if you are not out of available memory, you can consult the manual for a possible OS-dependent bug in /hermes/web06/b1809/pow.ianneal911zq1/htdocs/board/db/mysql4.php on line 48

An excellent way of suppression is to have the same server as the Big Brother forums!
Seriously though, this is a major problem here of late! |

There is this notice on PW support forums:

Quote: | MySQL and Slow Speeds
---------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------
I just wanted to give everyone concerned an update on the issue where some customers are experiencing intermittent sluggishness/non-responsiveness of their sites.
Basically, there is currently no limit as to the number of database connections any user can make with the server. So if someone tries to visit a site with a large database, the script running on the site can potentially open up a bunch of mysql connections in order to fulfill demand and leave none open for other customers on the same pool. Ultimately, this leads to other customers waiting for an open connection (sluggishness) or not getting one at all (non-responsiveness).
We're going to be working as hard and fast as possible to implement connection limits and possibly upgrade MySQL to version 5.
Thank you for your ongoing patience. |
Seems a little better atm ... |
