Sky News (surprise surprise) seem to be first off the mark with this one, reported yesterday by the Israeli "open source intelligence" outfit, ie: an organisation that claims to monitor jihadi websites and then "alert" their clients to imminent terror.

Quite incredible isn't it.

The western intelligence apparatus that swallows hundred of billions of dollars, pounds, euros, etc., is scooped by yet another private "intelligence" outfit that has the cutting edge ability to erm read Al Q blogs, then report what it sees fit to report which is then converted presumably by Homeland Security into increased policing and disruption on the streets of down town USA.

All of which is unverifiable, officially deniable and which nobody is officially actually responsible for.

Just like the SITE ahem Institute.

What ?

Is that code for , we can view them but you can't ?

What is an internal internet site ?

Does Al Q have a worldwide intranet now ?

DEBKAfile Exclusive: New Al Qaeda threat of radioactive truck attacks naming New York, Los Angeles, Miami

August 10, 2007, 1:11 AM (GMT+02:00)

The threat was picked up by DEBKAfile’s monitors from a rush of electronic chatter on al Qaeda sites Thursday, Aug. 8.

The al Qaeda communications accuse the Americans of the grave error of failing to take seriously the videotape released by the American al Qaeda spokesman Adam Gaddahn last week. “They will soon realize their mistake when American cities are hit by quality operations,” said one message.

Another said the attacks would be carried out “by means of trucks loaded with radio-active material against America’s biggest city and financial nerve center.”

A third message mentioned New York, Los Angeles and Miami as targets. It drew the answer: “The attack, with Allah’s help, will cause an economic meltdown, many dead, and a financial crisis on a scale that compels the United States to pull its military forces out of many parts of the world, including Iraq, for lack of any other way of cutting down costs.”

There is also a message which speaks obliquely of the approaching attacks easing the heavy pressure America exerts on countries like Japan, Cuba and Venezuela.

DEBKAfile’s counter-terror sources and monitors say there is no way of gauging for sure how serious these threats are, how real, or whether they are part of a war of nerves to give the Gaddahn tape extra mileage. But it is important to note that the exchange of messages took place over al Qaeda’s internal Internet sites and that they contained the threat of radioactive terror and specific American cities for the first time after a long silence on these subjects.

In addition, a growing number of clips has been disseminated of late over al Qaeda sites instructing the faithful how to design remote-controlled gliders, pack them with explosives and launch them against predetermined targets.

That's worth repeating:

Do they think that the US is not in an economic meltdown presently ?

Do they really think that a "dirty bomb" going off in the US would compel Bush to throw the military towel in ?

"For lack of any other way of cutting down costs ?"

Are they serious ?

Doesn't seem to follow the ahem normal "pentameter" of jihadispeak now does it ?

Who writes this stuff ?

Well. Who actually does write this stuff ?

Guesses please.

New York Target Of Dirty Bomb Rumour

Updated: 11:01, Saturday August 11, 2007

Bomb plot rumours posted on al Qaeda websites have prompted New York police to step up security in the city.

Target? Macy's department store

A rush of internet chatter led to fears that the radical group was plotting to detonate a dirty bomb around 34th street in Manhattan.

The bustling neighbourhood is home to the Empire State Building - New York City's tallest building, Madison Square Garden and Macy's department store.

Israeli website Debka reported that there had been many messages posted on al Qaeda sites.

One described an attack "by means of trucks loaded with radioactive material against America's biggest city and financial nerve center".

Another message mentioned New York, Los Angeles and Miami as targets, the news site reported.

The New York Police Department said it had boosted the number of radiological sensors on its vehicles, boats and helicopters.

Vehicle checkpoints have also been set up in lower Manhattan's financial district and at bridges and tunnels.

Police said the chilling warning was an "unverified radiological threat," and played down the increased security.

The Empire State Building

"It is stressed that these deployments are strictly precautionary and not the result of any verified threat," NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg stressed there was no reason to believe this threat was any different from countless others since the September 11 attacks.

"Earlier this evening, the NYPD began taking several public precautionary measures visible to New Yorkers to guard against an unverified threat that was found on the internet," he said.

"These actions are like those that the NYPD takes every day - precautions against potential but unconfirmed threats that may never materialise."

New York steps up security against al Qaeda attack in response to DEBKAfile Exclusive Report, followed by additional info on Manhattan dirty bomb

August 11, 2007, 10:45 AM (GMT+02:00)

New York police increased security Friday, Aug. 10, throughout Manhattan and tunnels and bridges against threat of an al Qaeda plot to detonate a dirty bomb in the city. The department cited an “unverified radiological threat” from Internet chatter reported on Israeli Web site debka.com, stressing the security hike was precautionary.

At the same time, the NY police confirmed to Reuters that additional information had been received that a dirty bomb may go off on Friday evening around 34th Street in Manhattan, where the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden and Macy’s department store are located. The deployment of radiological sensors was increased on vehicles, boats and helicopters and vehicle checkpoints set up in Wall Street, lower Manhattan’s financial district and at bridges and tunnels.

New York Mayor and US homeland department played down the threat as “unsubstantiated” and stressed the city’s alert status stayed unchanged at “orange.”

New York police take precautions after purported al Qaeda threat

NEW YORK (CNN) -- New York police officers screened vehicles Saturday near Wall Street with radiation detection devices as "a precautionary measure" after an unconfirmed Web report about a possible radiological attack on U.S. cities.

New York police scan traffic with radiation detectors Saturday morning in Manhattan.

The report was based on chatter allegedly seen Thursday on al Qaeda Web sites, but the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and New York Police Department insist the threat is unsubstantiated.

Octavia Nasr, CNN's senior editor for Arab affairs, said the purported message doesn't appear on any Web sites that CNN monitors and that the claim cannot be independently verified.

In addition, counterterrorism experts who work closely with CNN also were unable immediately to verify the claim, Nasr said.

The report about the purported radiological attacks was published on the Israeli Web site DEBKAfile based on a "rush of electronic chatter on al Qaeda sites."

One of the messages mentioned New York, Los Angeles, California, and Miami, Florida, as possible targets.

The New York Police Department stepped up some monitoring activities as a "precautionary measure," Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said late Friday.

Police set up barricades to slow traffic and on Saturday were pulling vans and trucks aside to aid in the detection of a possible radiological threat.

"While the threat remains unverified, our counterterrorism posture -- which is reconfigured daily based on intelligence from around the world -- has been modified," Browne said.

New York police have increased the deployment of radiological sensors on vehicles, boats and helicopters and set up vehicle checkpoints in the city, Lower Manhattan and at bridges and tunnels, Browne said.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, "These actions are like those that the NYPD takes every day -- precautions against potential but unconfirmed threats that may never materialize."

The city's alert status for an attack was unchanged and remains at the "orange" or "high" level.

"As New Yorkers we have gone about our lives even with the daily threat level at 'orange' every day since September 11, 2001," Bloomberg said. "That threat level has not changed because of this unverified threat, and we shouldn't let anyone terrorize us by spreading fear."

The report about the purported radiological attacks was published on the Israeli Web site DEBKAfile based on a "rush of electronic chatter on al Qaeda sites."

The report does not provide a link to the purported al Qaeda "chatter" or post the original statements.

The "chatter" allegedly chastises Americans for not taking seriously the threats American al Qaeda member Adam Yahiye Gadahn made in an al Qaeda-produced video released last week. In that video Gadahn -- also known as Azzam the American -- says U.S. embassies and American interests "at home and abroad" were prime targets for terrorist attacks.

FBI spokesman Richard Kolko said the purported threat was of "low credibility." But he said his agency was working with the Department of Homeland Security to share it with local authorities.

Department of Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke said, "We consider this threat to be unsubstantiated."

"There continues to be no credible or specific information telling us of an imminent threat to the homeland," Knocke said. "There is no substantial uptick in chatter. We are hearing more because we are better at collecting than we were in the summer of 2001."

But Knocke said his department supported New York's decision to take precautionary measures.

Officer Jason Lee, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department, said, "LAPD has not heard of any threats and is not aware of any warning on a federal, state or local level at this time."

Miami FBI Special Agent Judy Orihuela said, "We consider this to be of very very low credibility, and we're not doing anything differently in Miami."

And yet this is what Reuters have to say about the NYPD view:

http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSN1026252120070811?pageNumbe r=2

Reuters wrote:
"It is stressed that these deployments are strictly precautionary and not the result of any verified threat," NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said in a statement.

Yet DEBKA insist:

DEBKA wrote:

So who in fact writes this stuff ?

Phew no dirty bomb on Friday night then.

Meanwhile things were quite tense at LAX on Sat 11th August 2007:

Customs-computer glitch delays 20,000
By MarketWatch
Last Update: 12:05 PM ET Aug 12, 2007

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- A malfunctioning U.S. Customs computer system on Saturday delayed tens of thousands of passengers trying to enter the U.S. via Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), according to media reports.

Officials said that they did not know what caused the computer glitch but that there was no indication of hacking or sabotage.

The computer system allows the screening of people arriving into the U.S. aboard planes and includes a list of people who are subject to secondary searches.

Starting at around 2 p.m. Pacific on Saturday, the glitch led airport authorities to keep over 20,000 passengers sitting in 60 planes at four of LAX's terminals. Another seven planes were diverted to another airport, according to the Associated Press.

Some planes were on the tarmac long enough that workers refuelled them to keep their power and air-conditioning systems operating, and maintenance workers kept the lavatories in working order.

Three people fell ill while waiting in the terminals and had to be transported to local hospitals, the AP said.

And not a binary liquid jihadi in sight.

Sound familiar ?
