There’s something for the adults too; the resident engine `Lady Nan' will be on offer for the railway’s “Driver for a Fiver” experience. Here visitors can try their hand at actually driving a steam engine, in the safety of Cranmore Depot, for only £5.00.

And the weather forecast is good.

The clocks will be turned back this week at the East Somerset Railway as it relives the 1940s on a special weekend. The Way we Were event at the heritage railway near Shepton Mallet recreates life in 1940s Britain.

There’ll be much to see including a vintage vehicle rally with examples of civilian, military and agricultural vehicles from the time. It’s sure to bring back memories for many visitors who may have seen or worked on these types of vehicles in the past. There will be music from the period with the popular group “Dickie Lines” who will recreate the sounds of the 1940s. In addition there will be a number of craft tents providing the perfect opportunity to take home a locally-made souvenir. And of course there will be the normal steam train rides to go on.

Money from this experience helps raise money for locomotive restoration and maintenance on the East Somerset Railway.

Seeing as we're talking about holidays........the wife and me decided to go to Scotland for a few days but got sick of the driving so we went to Manchester instead.

The bathroom in the Palace Hotel was magnificent. The Chinese buffets were spectacular.

Sometimes a 9/11 activist has got to look on the bright side.
