'PEAK OIL' PHENOMENON QUESTIONED IN LEWES


'Peak Oil' - the much publicised idea that the world's oil resources are about to decline, throwing western civilisation into chaos - is being brought under scrutiny by the Lewes-based Changing Times organisation in a live debate entitled 'Peak Oil: Myth or Reality?', to be held at the Lewes All Saints Centre on Tuesday 4th September 2007.

Much media coverage has been given to concerns that the world's oil is about to run out - yet some are challenging the science and motives behind these claims, believing that their inevitable economic and political consequences mask more shadowy agendas.

Andy Thomas of Changing Times says: "There is a lot of fear-bound confusion about the true issues around peak oil, and so we have invited two speakers to give an airing to both sides of the debate. On the mainstream side, Mike Grenville, a leading Sussex environmental campaigner, will put the case for the reality of peak oil. On the other side of the argument, Ian R. Crane is an ex-oilfield executive who believes that the case for peak oil is unproven and that its ongoing promotion in the media is being used as a tool of control. The audience will be given the chance to participate in discussion, so that they can make up their own minds!"

The evening, held in a town with a very environmentally-aware population, promises to be a controversial and stimulating one. The Changing Times group has made a strong name for itself by covering a number of 'difficult' topics in the last year. "We make no apology for that," says Andy Thomas.
"If facing people with a new look at reality helps break them out of apathy and into trying to make a difference to the world around them in any way, then we are succeeding in our aims."

'Peak Oil: Myth or Reality?' takes place on Tuesday 4th September 2007, All Saints Centre, Friars Walk, Lewes, at 7.45pm. Details can be found at www.changingtimes.org.uk.

Debate - Peak Oil - Fact or Myth?

We have heard a lot about ‘Peak Oil’ in the last few months: the theory that the world’s oil reserves are about to peak, and from then on, as prices rocket, we will have to find other ways to power our fuel-thirsty world. Mike Grenville, of Transition Town Forest Gate, will be putting that view across in what promises to be a lively debate, organised by the ‘Changing Times’ lot, in the All Saints.

His views will be countered by Ian R Crane, who earlier this year used the same forum to air his views that there was a lot more to the 9/11 disaster than meets the eye. Ian worked for a number of years in the oil industry, and he is determined to challenge what he believes to be the ‘received wisdom’ that oil is a fossil fuel. “This isn’t necessarily the case,” he says. “In fact there are a lot of scientists who are arguing that oil is not a fossil fuel at all, and is in fact a self-replenishing mineral.” It is in the corporate world’s interest, he will argue, to encourage environmentalists to argue the peak oil line, in order to push the price of oil even higher. “I agree wholeheartedly with the environmentalists’ desire to find alternative fuels,” he says. “I just think that they have not necessarily got it right about oil, and they have been gratefully accepted as unlikely bedfellows by the leaders of corporatocracy.” Combustible stuff, then: sparks might fly.
