a guy goes out into the streets of Austin Texas in the USA and asks people 4 simple questions:

1. who is the vice president?

2. what year did 9/11 happen?

3. what's the first amendment?

4. who is the defence secretary?

Ah - I'm getting a no longer available notice on that.
Must have left it too long.

It's working.

I've actually seen it before I think.

I don't know what to say......people have been mesmerized by TV's 'bling'.

Some answers are beyond this universe.

"wait a minute, wait a minute.....we've just had the 10th anniversary!"

Siren Song

This is the one song everyone
would like to learn: the song
that is irresistible:

the song that forces men
to leap overboard in squadrons
even though they see beached skulls

the song nobody knows
because anyone who had heard it
is dead, and the others can’t remember.
Shall I tell you the secret
and if I do, will you get me
out of this bird suit?
I don’t enjoy it here
squatting on this island
looking picturesque and mythical
with these two feathery maniacs,
I don’t enjoy singing
this trio, fatal and valuable.

I will tell the secret to you,
to you, only to you.
Come closer. This song

is a cry for help: Help me!
Only you, only you can,
you are unique

at last. Alas
it is a boring song
but it works every time.

I don't live here. I swear. "Tony Blair is Linda Blair's brother..." OY.

During late 2002 I went to America on holiday - first and only time I've been there. What staggered me was the 'continual' news, all harping on about one subject, that of Bush's run up to the invasion of Iraq. Not any mention of what is going on elsewhere in the world, but with one exception, Tony Blair and his (war mongering) stance against Iraq, hand in hand with his mate Bush.

Brainwashing of the first degree, and, in a way, I can fully understand just how difficult it is for ordinary people to wake from their stupor and find out that things are not what they have continually drummed into them.

These clips above confirm matters, but it is very scary, don't you think??

if you've spent any length of time in the USA (I briefly lived and worked there) the responses in the clip I posted (and those from tmc) won't be too much of a surprise - although I must admit that I didn't expect so many people to not know what the first amendment is. and when it comes to knowledge about stuff outside of the USA they can really get into difficulty. I can recall answering any number of questions like....

bemused american: do you use american money over there in england?
me: no....
bemused american: uh - so what do you use then?
me: we have our own money....
bemused american: you have your own money? REALLY?

Very Happy

I remember, back in high school, wanting desperately to slam my head inside my desk until nothing but pulp remained. Why, you may ask? There's nothing quite like being surrounded by a large group of 16-year-olds that struggle with monosyllabic words. Confused
