Media have kept this kinda quiet, anyone going? Remember what happened the day after Guiliani was in Harrogate giving a speech about his 9/11 heroics?

Protest fears over visit by Bush Senior

PROTESTORS from all over the north of England will be bused into Harrogate to stage rowdy demonstrations during former American President, George Bush Senior's visit to the town next Friday.

Bush Snr, who developed the controversial "Star Wars" missile defence station at Menwith Hill near Harrogate during his presidency, is appearing as guest speaker at the prestigious Yorkshire International Business Convention.

Police will deploy extra officers on the day after campaign groups across Yorkshire and Lancashire announced they are arranging coaches to the Yorkshire Event Centre to protest against the US-led war in Iraq and American foreign policy past and present.

Greater Manchester Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), Leeds Coalition Against the War, Bradford Stop the War Coalition, Yorkshire CND and Bradford University Student's Union are some of the organisations that have confirmed they will be involved.

They plan to begin their rally in front of the Yorkshire Event Centre at the Great Yorkshire Showground at 2pm – an hour-and-a-half before Bush Snr begins his lecture.

Sarah Cartin of Yorkshire CND said that the demonstrations will voice opposition to the Iraq war and will also oppose American military activities around the world, including the Menwith Hill base.

"As President, this man was responsible for hostile military actions," she said.

"We are encouraging as many people as possible to join us to let this Father for Injustice, George Bush Snr, know that he is not welcome in Yorkshire."

Business convention organisers have confirmed that they will not be employing extra security staff for the visit as Bush Snr will be protected by his own band of armed bodyguards but added that they will be taking advice from the former President's security staff.

Harrogate police said extra officers would be deployed to deal with the protestors.

Sgt Chas Petty said: "There will be a police response to deal with the protest, should it transpire, and to allow them to protest peacefully and to ensure there is no disruption to members of the public.

"It is normal police procedure to have a person liasing with the organiser of the protest so that we are aware of what they are trying to achieve and how many people are coming so that it can pass off peacefully."

Protesters plan 'welcome' for Bush Snr

By Peter Lazenby
PROTESTORS from across Yorkshire are heading for Harrogate to demonstrate at a visit to the town by former United States President George Bush Snr.
Mr Bush will be addressing the Yorkshire International Business Convention at Harrogate's Yorkshire Event Centre on Friday June 9.
Yorkshire Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Leeds Coalition Against the War, Bradford Stop the War Coalition, and the University of Bradford Students' Union are among organisations supporting the protest, which takes place at 2pm.
Nuclear
Leeds protestors will be meeting in City Square in Leeds at 12.30pm, and buses will be leaving Bradford at 1pm from the Anglican Chaplaincy/ Fairtrade Cafe, Ashgrove, opposite Bradford University.
During his Presidency Mr Bush supported development of the US 'Star Wars' space-based nuclear defence system, which involves the US military base at Menwith Hill outside Harrogate.
The campaigners have set up a website at www.bushwatch.co.uk.

OK, so I get the connection with Menwith Hill - but what is the official reason for George Bush Senior to be hanging out with Yorkshire businessmen?

Sounds a bit 'second and third knuckle to me'.
