Madrid train bombings: 21 found guilty
http://news.uk.msn.com/Article.aspx?cp-documentid=6542953
A Spanish judge has found 21 people guilty of involvement in the Madrid train bombings which killed 191 people.
But the alleged masterminds were cleared of plotting Europe's deadliest Islamist attack on March 11, 2004, which also left 1,800 injured when ten bombs ripped through four commuter trains.
Moroccans Jamal Zougam and Othman el Gnaoui were each sentenced to more than 40,000 years in prison for the bombings, although under Spanish law they can only serve a maximum of 40.
Zougam and Gnaoui were convicted of belonging to a terrorist organisation and terrorist murder.
Spaniard Emilio Suarez Trashorras, who also helped supply the bombers with explosives, got thousands of years in jail.
Seven of the 28 accused were acquitted of any involvement in the bombings including one alleged mastermind, Rabei Osman Sayed Ahmed, known as Mohamed the Egyptian, who is already jailed in Italy for belonging to an international terrorist group.
Another two men accused of planning the attack were also cleared of the March 11 deaths but were found guilty and jailed for belonging to a terrorist organisation.
Judge Javier Gomez Bermudez ruled out participation of Basque guerrillas ETA in the bombings. Prosecutors said the bombers were inspired by al-Qaeda.
Many survivors and families who lost members gathered at the courthouse have expressed disappointment at the sentences.
Eutiquio Gutierrez, whose 39-year old daughter died in the bombing, said: "It seems to us that only a few of them got a lot of years in prison. There aren't many heavy sentences considering how many people were affected."
Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said: "Nothing can make up for the loss, but now their suffering can be alleviated by knowing the truth of what happened and who did it."
All the suspects pleaded innocent and those found guilty are expected to appeal against their sentences. _________________ 'Come and see the violence inherent in the system.

I haven't followed the trial at all, but of course I had to have a look at the Joe Vialls analysis of the original events.
Anybody know how the latter and the trial transcript compare? _________________ http://www.exopolitics-leeds.co.uk/introduction |

29 people were put on trial. One was acquited during the trial. Seven were acquitted today, including the alleged mastermind:
Quote: | Rabei Osman Sayed Ahmed
Also known as "Mohamed The Egyptian", Mr Osman was found not guilty of having played a key role in bombings.
Prosecutors had argued that he played a key role in organising the attacks.
He was arrested in Milan, Italy, in a joint anti-terror operation between Italy, Spain, France and Belgium on 8 June 2004.
He was extradited to Spain in December 2004, then was returned to Italy in 2005 to face trial on separate terrorism charges.
There he was convicted of having links to terror cells in Europe and Iraq, and sentenced to 10 years in prison, and then sent back to Spain for the Madrid trial. |
That leaves 21. Of these 14 were given hefty sentences (12 years typically) for belonging to a terrorist organisation. Of the remaining 7, only three were given 40,000 year sentences.
The media present this as a prosecutorial success. It is somewhat less than that. _________________ Follow the numbers |

No one admitted liability.
No one actually caught with any evidence.
The alleged perpetrators killed when surrounded by police.
Others stating they have no link whatsoever with Al Quaeda.
These are fabricated show trials for mass consumption.
Has anyone noted the volume of anti-islamic propaganda in general?
Monday we had Spooks. Today we had Britz. The Evening Standard full of anti-islamic vies.
The airwaves full of garbage about Saudi Arabia at the same time as they hold a state visit.
The 'war on terror' has become islamomedia nonsense everywhere. |
