On 27th June 2007 the EU Internal Market Committee announced it's decision to introduce measures to tighten up gun controls, including restricting their sale over the web and increasing the minimum age for small arms licensing to 18

In Finland, you can legally own small arms at 15

It has since been reported that the Finnish MEP response to the EU proposals, was that there was no need to introduce these changes because of the extremely low level of gun crime in Finland.

(I've asked for these responses)

The Graduate Institute of International Studies produce an annual report called Small Arms Survey 200x

Chapter 2 of the Small Arms Survey 2007 entitled "Completing the count: civilian firearms", published earlier this year listed Finland as having the 3rd highest level of gun ownership in the world, behind Yemen and the US.

Since the alleged "YouTube killer", apparently did what he did at the Jokela High School in Tuusula on 7.11.7, Finland's Prime Minister, Matti Vanhanen has been reported as saying that these events will certainly inform the debates about gun ownership and school security in Finland.

Pekka-Erik Auvinen is reported to acquired his gun licence only 19 days earlier.

There is a very curious backdrop to the YouTube saga.

Among the many videos allegedly posted under Auvinen's two account names (all posted within the last 2-3 weeks) were clips professing interest in various serial killers, atheism and Nazi eugenic themes, with one single, seemingly out of context clip regarding SSRI's titled "SSRI - One Pill A Day Makes You Happy... ...or then not!"

Apparently, Pekka-Erik Auvinen was party to some "exchanges" on YouTube between various other members. One of whom has since made a new video responding to the shootings.

According to the Small Arms Survey 2007, the next largest country in the world for private gun ownership, after Finland, is Switzerland.

Finland to toughen gun laws

Friday, 9 November 2007 23:07

Finland's cabinet has moved to toughen gun laws, two days after an 18-year-old school student shot dead eight people and then himself in the south of the country.

Finland will support an EU measure it had previously contested which prevent minors from possessing guns. Finnish law currently allows 15-year-olds to own guns.

Finland has one of the world's highest gun ownership rates, ranking third behind the United States and Yemen.

However, the new rules could not however have prevented Wednesday's school massacre as the gunman, Pekka-Eric Auvinen, was 18-years-old when he bought his weapon.

Wednesday's incident prompted questions about how Auvinen had so easily obtained a license for the handgun he used.

Meanwhile, Finland remained on edge as police briefly surrounded two other schools after Internet threats of further attacks. In both cases, police later lifted the threat warning.

Jokela gunman said he used antidepressants

The Jokela gunman Pekka-Eric Auvinen is very likely to have used anti-depressant drugs, which have been linked with school massacres in the United States. A message written by "Sturmgeist89", a pseudonym used by Auvinen, appeared on the Internet a short time ago stating that he took the mood-enhancers, although he hated them.

In a video that he placed on YouTube, Sturmgeist89 displays packages of Cipralex, Zoloft, Luvox, and Prozac pills. The video "SSRI-One Pill A Day Makes You Happy" criticises medicalisation.

The drugs in question are Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the perpetrators the massacre at Columbine High School in Colorado in the USA, had said that they took pills in the same class of drugs.

There is disagreement among experts as to whether or not the drugs can provoke destructive aggression.

In a message he put on an Internet chat room Pekka-Eric Auvinen suggests that he had started using anti-depressants during the past year.

"StormSpirit", another pseudonym used by Auvinen, wrote on the Peliplaneetta.net website that he had suffered "from some degree of depression for about a year".

Sturmgeist89 told a Danish former female acquaintance that he felt frustrated and aggressive because of the drugs. On the other hand, in his English-language message he said that he had stopped taking the pills, at least temporarily.

At Thursday's press conference police said that Auvinen's autopsy had not been completed, and that it was not yet known if he was under the influence of any medicines.

The police are checking with Auvinen's parents and health care officials to see if he had been prescribed antidepressants. He also may have acquired them illegally or over the Internet.

The National Agency for Medicines recommends against prescribing SSRIs for people under the age of 18, because of the self-destructive or hostile emotions that they have been known to provoke.

A directive on firearms is in the making in the European Union, which would raise the age limits for getting a firearm permit.

Finland is the only member state opposed to the change.

EU may 'fast track' gun control

BBC News

Last week's school massacre in Finland is a "wake up call"

A British MEP is hoping to "fast track" a new EU deal on gun control and says last week's school massacre in Finland should act as a wake up call.

Are you saying that is somewhat unacceptable?

I have never understood why citizens in the civilised world (as opposed to those living in an environment that dictates ownership), demand to own guns?

It's the basic Rambo mindset, and (as I'm sure you know), it's much worse over here. These types that go on and on about militias and having a well-armed populace think that the occasional booze-fueled weekend of shooting at tin cans out in the woods will really prepare them for an assault by heavily-armed Special Forces types. Badly misinterpreting the 2nd amendment doesn't help much, either.

Michigan Militia = guys who have watched Red Dawn one too many times...

So it was lost.

Finland was the only EU country to oppose the legislation.

I tried just to emphasise it in the hope that you might do it yourself

Then it won't just be me will it?

Anyway.

27.6.2007 to Pekka-Eric Auvinen's SSRI induced swansong was 1 day and 19 weeks.

Finland is the most heavily armed EU country.

Apart from that, they have no royal family and a very strong egalitarian ethos.

They also have a government for the people.

The country consistently ranks in the top-5 in quality of education, public services (transport, health care), water.

One third of Finns have master's degrees.

Contrast that with the daftness of UK's front-desk 'customer care consultants' Smile

I didn't either until recently. Its to protect yourself from bad government, or in the 2007 scenario, ZOG
