The election strategy of Australia's prime minister John Howard is in turmoil today after members of his Liberal party were caught red-handed in an inept dirty tricks campaign.
Bogus flyers, from a fake organisation called the Islamic Australia Federation, were distributed through the letterboxes of voters in a marginal seat claiming the Labor opposition sympathised with Islamic terrorists.
The leaflets referred to the men imprisoned for the 2002 nightclub bomb attacks in Bali, which left more than 200 people dead. The flyers also claimed to support the building of new mosques in the area.
Howard has made it clear the stunt was not authorised by his party but the damage has been immense. With only two days to go before the country goes to the polls, it overshadowed the premier's final rallying call to voters today asking them to trust him with Australia's future.
A team of Labor officials found five men posting the clumsily printed flyers - the phrase Allah Akbar, God is Great, had been misspelled as Ala Akba - through letterboxes in the early hours of the morning.
The members of the Liberal party involved in the deed, in the key marginal seat of Lindsay, near Sydney, included the husbands of a retiring candidate and her replacement. They said later that their wives had not been aware of what they were doing.
The Australian Electoral Commission has said it will set up an inquiry and police are being asked to investigate whether the group committed a criminal offence by appealing to anti-Muslim sentiment.
Howard said the leaflets should never have been distributed and called the material was "tasteless and offensive," but the spectacular own goal was seized upon by the Labor leader Kevin Rudd, who is leading in the polls.
After 11 years it's clear the Liberals have nothing left to offer other than desperation, negativity and dirty tactics," Rudd said in Brisbane.
The president of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, Ikebal Patel, said the incident was "despicable." |

That is totally disgusting. I tuned into Virgin 1 the new cable channel last night. They were running a program called "Criminal Minds". This is a show where the leading characters are a group of psychological experts who solve crimes. This particular episode was about Islamic terrorists who were to attack an opening of a new shopping mall. They had the "terrorist leader in custody and were using a technique that did not include Water Boarding(of course they would never do that would they) or pain torture of any kind, but instead psychological trickery. They altered time so the guy in detention thought he was praying at the right times, when all along he was in fact a few hours early. They then run a fake news video to deceive him into believing the attack had already gone ahead to get him to reveal the real location, and it worked. My point is. It seemed to be designed to make the Islam look bad. And the CIA, FBI and the DEA look like the good guys. I was. As you could imagine. Disgusted with this type of propaganda. TV has a lot to answer for.

People around the world are kicking these evil Bar-stewards into touch.
Scotland definately has, the Americans have tried in the mid-terms(although the alternative seems to be more of the same  )... now Australia has woken in what seems to be a rather resounding way.
Now come on me English chums and kick out both the Labour and Tory (I know it ain't going to happen basically because you have no-one really to vote for who actually serves your needs.) Maybe you guys should start an ENP (English National Party) based on the policies of the SNP up here in Scotland? ie. No Nukes, no illegal wars, Equality for all races, serving the people of England for England.
Just a thought.  |
