UN probe finds Israel guilty of war crimes

A UN report has found Israel responsible for six major crimes committed against Palestinians during the three-week offensive in the Gaza Strip.
The report released on Tuesday blamed Israel for six serious incidents leading to death, injuries, or damage during the Gaza War, AFP reported.
"In six of the nine incidents the board concluded that the death, injuries and damage involved were caused by military actions, using munitions launched or dropped from the air or fired from the ground, by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF)," the report said.
United Nations Headquarters Board of Inquiry launched a probe into nine incidents after Israel bombed several UN schools and buildings in December's war against Palestinians.
Two UN schools were bombed in a single day which led to the death of at least 50 people most of them women and children who took refuge in the buildings. The 22-day war left at least 1,350 people killed in the strip...

Address by UN Secretary--General Ban-Ki Moon on the 60th Anniversary of Israel's Admission
......Few people know that Israel is the only state to be given a conditional admission. Under General Assembly Resolution 273, Israel was admitted on the condition that it grant all Palestinians the right to return to their homes and receive compensation for lost or damaged property, according to General Assembly Resolution 194 paragraph 11. Suffice to say, Israel has never lived up to these terms, and never intended to.
For 60 years Israel has violated its terms of admission, and for 60 years the UN has done nothing about it. It has watched as Israel heaped misery upon misery on Palestine, and violated international law with impunity.
After “Operation Cast Lead,” no person, no country, no democracy can look at Israel without thinking of the inhuman slaughter and destruction committed by the axis powers in World War II, though one could have said the same about numerous past massacres. What atrocities might the world have been spared if the UN had refused to admit Israel 60 years ago?
Of course, the immediate post war world was a different time. The world had just witnessed the horrors of Hitler’s racist excesses, and collective Western guilt for the Holocaust dictated attitudes toward the idea of Jewish state. Even the UN could not withstand the moral pressure.
On Nov. 29, 1947, it passed General Assembly Resolution 181, “The Partition Plan,” to carve a Jewish state out of Arab Palestine. However, it was never ratified by the Security Council, and so does not exist in law, which means the UN played no role in the creation of Israel. Nevertheless, “The Partition Plan” was utterly illegal and a violation of the UN Charter, because the UN had no right or power to take land from one people and give it to another.
If it hopes to play a meaningful role in the 21st century, the UN must do more than simply promise to enact reforms. It must search deep within its soul to redress the fundamental violations of its founding principles, which have long since ceased to have any force. That recommitment must begin now, for it was 60 years ago today, May 11, 1949, that Israel became a member of the UN. The UN cannot hope to achieve any measure of peace or justice as long as it condones war crimes, which it does every day that Israel is allowed to flout its terms of admission............

When I first read that qoute, the Isreali's having a drill involving the senario of the US and Yakuza suicide bombers didn't really make sense, until I finished it.

Why should Jews be the only people on earth who are allowed to CREATE an apartheid state within which it is internationally accepted that they can exercise a racist agenda? how can there possibly be any viable future for such a state, particularly considering its treatment of its neighbours?

The Israelis are hopping mad. And they're flexing their muscles in all the ugly places. They can't ram us again without sparking an international uproar, so they're trying to stop us from leaving the port at all. The Limasol, Cyprus Port Authority which controls the port of Larnaca also, sent their inspector to Larnaca with a letter saying that the boat failed inspection, only thing, the letter was written BEFORE he even arrived in Larnaca to do the inspection! Reuters is doing the story at this very moment saying that we were prevented from leaving due to Cypriot authorities. We just learned from a Cyprus government source that pressure is being applied by Israel to deny us departure credentials. It appears, then, that Israel is putting us into contortions because they don't want us to take cement into Gaza. After white phosphorus, depleted uranium, DIME, cluster bombs, F16s, death, destruction, and mayhem. All of *this* over a few bags of cement. Can you believe???

Activists plan to send Gaza cement, in violation of Israel blockade

Activists campaigning for an end to Gaza's blockade by Israel will sail to the Hamas-run enclave from Cyprus despite the presence of the Israeli navy, they said on Thursday.
Two boats, including one carrying cement and building supplies -- materials not permitted in by Israel over fears that they could be used for military purposes -- will sail from Cyprus on June 25, the multi-national Free Gaza Movement said.
"We are taking 15 tons of cement, which is just a token of how much the Palestinians need, because the Israelis won't allow building supplies into Gaza," said Greta Berlin, a representative of the group.
The group started regular shuttles to Gaza from Cyprus in August 2008, but was turned back by the Israeli navy on its last journey in mid-January of this year.
Israel tightened a blockade on Gaza in 2007 after the Islamist Hamas took control of the enclave, a strip of land that is home to 1.5 million people.
Israeli forces bombed and then invaded Gaza in late December 2008 in a bid to rout out militants lobbing rockets into Israel, badly battering its already decrepit infrastructure.

LARNACA, Cyprus, June 25 (Reuters) - Cyprus stopped two
boats planning to carry aid to the Gaza Strip in defiance of an
Israeli blockade from leaving port on Thursday, officials said.
The U.S.-based Free Gaza Movement had been planning to take
33 activists to Gaza with medical supplies and cement, a
material that Israel does not allow into the Palestinian
territory devastated by a short war that ended early this year.
The Free Gaza Movement started sending regular aid voyages
from Cyprus to Gaza in August 2008, but one of its boats was
involved in a collision with an Israeli vessel in December, and
was turned back on another mission in January.
Cypriot shipping officials cited inspection requirements for

Britain denies 'arms embargo' of Israel

Britain denied on Monday that it had imposed an arms embargo on Israel in the wake of January's Operation Cast Lead.
Both the Foreign Office in London and the embassy in Tel Aviv told The Jerusalem Post that media reports claiming a "partial arms embargo" were incorrect.
Rather, five arms export licenses to British companies for the sale of military equipment to Israel were revoked because their use during Operation Cast Lead constituted a "contravention" of the conditions of the sale.
The revocation came after a British government review of 182 arms export licenses to Israel. All five revoked licenses were related to the upkeep of the Navy's Sa'ar 4.5 gunboats.
"Some of the licenses have been revoked," confirmed an embassy spokesperson, "but it's very short of being an arms embargo or sanctions of any kind."... ... ...blah blah blah

As we approach the first anniversary of the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network (IJAN), we remember the anniversary of Sabra and Shatila and over 61 years of Palestinian struggle against ethnic cleansing. We are reminded that the latest siege and blockade of Gaza is part of this ongoing colonization of Palestine. Much has changed since the release of the founding Charter of the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network on 29 September 2008. The Palestinian call for boycott of, divestment from, and sanctions against Israel (BDS) is gaining in presence and impact, both internationally and inside Israel. Israel’s barbaric assault on Gaza has inspired humanitarian efforts to break the siege, calls for prosecuting Israeli war criminals, and the breaking of diplomatic ties by Venezuela, Bolivia, and Mauritania.
Against the backdrop of this increased oppression, we are witnessing efforts to resume a negotiated ‘peace’ brokered by the United States. The alleged ‘peace plan’ picks up where the Oslo Accords left off. That project was successfully interrupted by second intifada, and it must not be permitted to reemerge in the form of a series of separate and caged Palestinian bantustans on 22 percent of historic Palestine….
The work ahead is to hold our own governments accountable for their support and funding of Israeli apartheid and colonization, and to mobilize public opinion to achieve this goal. To this end, the increasingly successful BDS campaign is our most powerful tool. In our second year, IJAN hopes to continue its work with those committed to the liberation of the Palestinian people as part of the broader struggle against racism, colonialism, and imperialism worldwide.

On October 10-16, 2009, the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) is planning to hold a tourism conference in Tel Aviv, Israel, aimed at boosting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) leisure tourism to Israel. The audience of this conference is expected to be made up mostly of travel agents who specialize in promoting LGBT tourism. With this conference IGLTA, in cooperation with an Israeli LGBT organization, the Aguda, will give its symbolic and financial support to a state that continually occupies, oppresses and dispossess millions of Palestinians and murders and imprisons many thousands of them. An Israeli Cabinet minister has called off a visit to Britain because of concerns he could be arrested on suspicion of committing war crimes.
The decision by Moshe Yaalon, a former military chief who is now a vice prime minister, came a week after Palestinian activists tried unsuccessfully to have Israel's defence minister arrested during a visit to Britain.
A spokesman said Mr Yaalon decided not to take up his invitation to a charity fundraising event 'to avoid playing into the hands of anti-Israel propaganda'.
Several Israeli officials have been threatened with legal action in Britain under the legal principle of 'universal jurisdiction', which states that the most serious crimes can be prosecuted here, even if they were allegedly committed abroad.
Palestinian organisations have pursued Israeli officers who took part in operations in which civilians were killed. So far, they have failed to have anyone arrested.
Last week, they used the principle to demand the arrest of defence minister Ehud Barak, while he attended the Labour Party conference.

Twenty-two activists were arrested at Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's speech to the World Affairs Council on 22 October between 6:30 and 7:30pm at the Westin St. Francis Hotel at Union Square in San Francisco. Inside the auditorium, activists began disrupting the event by placing Olmert under citizens arrest. Every couple of minutes, more activists disrupted his speech, barely allowing him to speak, by reading the names of the children killed in Gaza last winter, reading from the recently published Goldstone report and displaying banners that read "Lift the Siege on Gaza" and "War Crimes are Not Free Expression!" Activists were removed from the auditorium chanting "war criminal!" and taken to the Tenderloin Police Station where they are being held for citation. Ten additional persons participated in the action but were not arrested.

I SUPPORT THE GOLDSTONE REPORT
Frankly, I've had enough of the lies and distortions surrounding the UN Goldstone Report. I've had enough of the maneuvering by Israel, the US, and other countries in order to dismiss the report and its authors and bury it altogether.
If you are as dismayed as I am, sign at SupportGoldstone.org, and we'll let key Israeli officials, members of Congress, and Goldstone himself know how many of you support the report.
What we need, instead of the smear campaigns, is discussion of the report's substance: the use of phosphorus that literally burned people alive (I saw the terrible impact with my own eyes on a recent trip to Gaza); or the use of metal darts called flechettes that twist when they enter the body; or the long term impacts of contaminated land and water.
Early next week the report heads to the floor of the US Congress and the UN General Assembly, and we're expecting continued pressure to have this important document roundly dismissed.
The continued attacks on the Goldstone Report prevent accountability for the civilian victims before, during and after the attack on Gaza -- both Palestinians and Israelis -- and shred the rule of law.
That's why we are asking you to say: I support the Goldstone Report. Once you sign, we'll tell you how to easily and quickly lobby Congress and your UN Ambassador in the next few days.
The truth is that the Goldstone Report is a well-researched, fair-minded report. It accuses both Israel and Hamas of war crimes and possible crimes against humanity during the attack on Gaza, and it calls on Israel and Hamas to conduct credible, independent investigations or face the International Criminal Court.
I support the Goldstone Report.
Israel decided not to cooperate with the investigation and now claims that the report and its results are biased. Worse yet, Israel claims that the report negates its right to defend its population, when in reality, all the report does is insist that such a defense take place within the bounds of international law.
The United States and other countries are repeating the same lines, and have exerted great diplomatic pressure to kill the report.
The US Congress is getting ready to pass a resolution next week calling on President Obama to do everything he can to bury the Goldstone Report. The UN General Assembly will vote on it. Israel might launch its own investigation, if it is pressured enough to do so. And if it does, our task will be to ensure that the investigation is comprehensive, impartial, and aimed towards addressing, punishing and preventing future human rights abused - and not at changing the laws of war such that another blatant assault on civilian life and property as the Gaza war will ever become acceptable under international law.

Viva Palestina Convoy changes route

Organisers of Viva Palestina aid convoy, which is trying to reach the Gaza Strip, have now agreed to go via Syria en route for Egypt.
The agreement came after a Turkish mediator reached a deal with the Egyptian consul in Jordan's Red Sea port of Aqaba.
The convoy will now head to the Syrian port of Latakia to sail from there to the Egyptian port of El Arish, and then to Gaza.
Viva-Palestina which have been stranded in Aqaba for five days is led by George Galloway, a British MP.
Turkey dispatched an official on Saturday to try convince the Egyptians to allow the convoy to go through the Red Sea port of Nuweiba, the most direct route to Gaza after Egypt insisted that the convoy can only enter through El-Arish, on its Mediterranean coast.
Viva Palestina and another convoy, The Gaza Freedom March, were planning to arrive on Sunday to commemorate the first anniversary of Israel's war on Gaza that killed 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis.

Which brings us to the turning-point in US/Israeli relations, the Six-Day War and the murderous and treacherous Israeli attack on the USS Liberty (which happened just off El Arish), and also the Israeli massacre of thousands of Egyptian prisoners-of-war (whiich happened in the El Arish area).
