Belarus President to Visit

TEHRAN, Oct. 22--President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Sunday the current unipolar world order is exerting pressure on countries, independent ones in particular.
In a meeting with Belarus Foreign Minister Sergei Martinov, President Ahmadinejad called for cooperation among brotherly nations to disrupt this unjust order, ISNA reported.
The president described relations between the two nations as “very close and fraternal“ and highlighted the need for further bilateral cooperation.
He stressed that mutual relations should be developed in political and economic sectors such as energy, industry and production of defense equipment.
“The Islamic Republic is determined to establish bilateral and multilateral ties with independent states such as Belarus,“ he said.
Referring to the upcoming trip of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko to Tehran, President Ahmadinejad hoped bilateral ties would expand as a result of this trip.
Martinov pointed to the common stances of the two governments regarding international issues and called for enhancement of ties.
Criticizing the existing unipolar order, the envoy voiced his readiness to cooperate with Iran to turn this order into a multipolar one.

Considering that America is the only country to have ever used nuclear weapons against another nation, we really are not one to be calling the kettle black, much less deciding who else in the world is allowed to own nuclear deterrence.
What qualifies America to own more than 5,000 nuclear missiles (enough to decimate the entire populations of Europe and Asia), or gives us the right to dictate nuclear policy to other sovereign nations who are at greater risk of invasion or attack than the US?
After all, it was America who violated the Salt II Treaty, not the Soviets. Are other sovereign nations not entitled to defend themselves from aggression, perhaps even from the US!
Why is Israel ’allowed’ to have nuclear weapons along with India and Pakistan, but other nations are not? When was the Bush administration appointed as the Nuclear Policeman of the world? I ask these questions rhetorically, only so my fellow-Americans can see how others see us around the world--as arrogant bullies who try to dominate, control and manipulate policies of other sovereign nations.
After all the US invasions over the last three decades, we really don’t have much credibility left in the world as ’peacekeepers’ and our nuclear cache, the largest in the world, betrays all the anti-Iran and anti-North Korea rhetoric emanating from the White House. Imposition of our will over others by threat or brutal military force or economic extortion (aka “trade sanctions“) only foments even more hatred and contempt for America in the world.
The nuclear status quo in the world is anything but fair or just, and if we are truly concerned about world peace and not just military superiority (which we would have even without a nuclear arsenal), our focus should be on global disarmament rather than trying to prevent one or two countries from achieving nuclear defense capability.
Every former president since Kennedy and leader of the world agreed that the greatest threat to the world today is a nuclear mishap, a missing nuclear device or a dirty bomb. Nuclear weapons and weapons-grade materials should be outlawed and vigorously enforced. Do we really need over 5,000 nuclear bombs when a handful are more than enough to incapacitate any genuine and imminent threat? Do we need more military power than that which was so well demonstrated in Iraq?
As a genuine superpower, we should lead by example and stop expecting other countries to do as we say, and not as we do. When it comes to nuclear weapons, we can achieve this only through mutual disarmament.
If we allow the Bush administration to continue on with this “Might Makes Right“ attitude, we will never regain the respect or the trust of the world lost through the Iraq fiasco. Being feared is not the same as being respected, and it will only be a matter of time before other nations team up to defeat the common “schoolyard bully“.
If America does not respect the sovereignty of other nations, including those with leadership not to our liking, we can no longer claim and profess to be champions of democracy and we will find ourselves on the slippery slope of self-destruction, as did the British when their empire collapsed.
Any leader can make a war, but only a great one can make peace. Someone needs to dust off White House diplomacy before all in Washington forget what it is, and just how far it can really go in this world. Hypocrisy does not make a very good foundation for foreign relations.
