FEMA caught in news conference scandal
Sat, 27 Oct 2007 06:26:52
FEMA Deputy Director Harvey Johnson
The US Federal Emergency Management Agency has been caught in a scandal after it faked a news conference about California's wildfire.
The press conference was broadcast live by US cable TV networks Tuesday morning as the California wildfires were at their peak and the US government was under pressure to react quickly following its chaotic reaction to Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
According to the Washington Post, which first reported the story, the press conference was called with only 15 minutes notice, leaving no time for actual reporters to make it in time. Reporters were also given a telephone number to listen in on but could not ask questions over the phone.
During the conference FEMA staffers posed as reporters and asked the agency's deputy director, Harvey Johnson questions.
A statement was issued Friday, in which Johnson officially apologized for the agency's scandal and 'error in judgment'. _________________

Messed up as that is, I don't expect our media would have asked anything especially hard-hitting anyway. _________________ "What about a dance club that only let in deaf people? It would really only need flashing lights, so they'd save a lot of money on music." - Dresden Codak |

It's not terribly unlike Bush getting caught having planted that Jeff Gannon guy in the WH press room a couple years ago.
As far as this thing with FEMA goes, it really doesn't surprise me. It is completely filthy, don't get me wrong, but I can see why they wouldn't want to confront really obvious questions as to why rich white people in California were getting such a quicker, better response than poor black people in New Orleans... _________________ "What about a dance club that only let in deaf people? Yes that Jeff Gannon must know plenty of secrets, i wonder how much they are paying him to prevent him spilling the beans.
That would be the biggest kiss and tell of all time. _________________
