(CNN) -- At least four people at a training center for young Christian missionaries were wounded by a gunman who walked into their building in suburban Denver early Sunday and opened fire, a police spokeswoman said.

The gunman apparently ran away after the shooting at the Youth With A Mission center in Arvada, Colorado, said Arvada police spokeswoman Susan Medina.

There was no immediate word on the condition of the four people who were wounded.

It was unclear how many of the wounded were staff members and students, Medina said.

About 50 people were in the building at the time of the shooting, she said.

The center is home to dozens of young people from all over the world who are being trained as Christian missionaries, according to the center's Web site.

Police hope the fresh snow outside the building will help them track the shooter, Medina said.

A "reverse 911" call went out to residents of neighborhood to let them know a shooting suspect might be in their area, she said.

ARVADA, Colo., Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Police in Colorado tracked footprints in the snow Sunday in their search for a gunman who wounded at least four people in a Christian missionary center.

The shooter fled after opening fire at the Youth With A Mission center in Arvada, Colo., in suburban Denver, CNN reported.

The condition of the wounded was unknown and it was not clear how many were staff members and students, police told CNN.

About 50 people were in the center, which is home to dozens of young people from around the world training as Christian missionaries, CNN reported.

Police made a "reverse 911" call to residents of the neighborhood to let them know a shooting suspect might be in the area.

* Police say gunman is white, about 20; may have facial hair, glasses
* About 45 people were in the building at the time of the shooting

(CNN) -- A gunman opened fire Sunday in a training center for young Christian missionaries outside Denver, Colorado, killing two people and wounding two others, police said.

The lone gunman walked into Youth with a Mission, began shooting and then ran away, according to a Susan Median of the Arvada Police Department.

One person remained in critical condition, according to Peter Iliyn, the regional director for Youth With a Mission. He did not give information regarding the fourth person wounded in the attack.

The names of the victims were being withheld pending notification of family members, police said.

The gunman was described as a white male, about 20 years old, said Median. He may be wearing glasses and a dark skull cap or beanie. He also may be sporting a beard or mustache, she said.

Police were using dogs in their search efforts and were hoping the fresh snow outside the building may help them track the suspect, Median said.

It was unclear how many of those shot were staff members and students, Median said.

Those not wounded were transported to an off-site location where police are interviewing them, she said.

About 45 people were in the building at the time of the shooting, she said.

The center is home to dozens of young people from all over the world who are training to be Christian missionaries, according to the center's Web site.

A "reverse 911" call went out to residents of the neighborhood to let them know a shooting suspect might be in the area, she said.

Median urged residents to call police if they spot anything suspicious.

2 die in Colo Christian missionary training center shooting

ARVADA, Colo.—A gunman walked into a training center dormitory for young Christian missionaries early Sunday and opened fire, killing two people and wounding two others.

No arrests had been made by late morning.

The shooting happened at about 12:30 a.m. at the Youth With a Mission center, police spokeswoman Susan Medina said. About 45 people were evacuated from the dormitory in this Denver suburb.

Medina said a man and a woman in their mid 20s died, and two men ages 22 and 23 were wounded.

Paul Filidis, a Colorado Springs-based spokesman with Youth With a Mission, said all four of the victims were staff members. One of the injured men was in critical condition, he said.

He did not have additional information.

Witnesses told police that the gunman was a 20-year-old white male, wearing a dark jacket and skull cap. He may have glasses or a beard.

"There's no blueprint for this, we're just going to be honest and pray for one another, cry with one another," center director Peter Warren told KUSA-TV. "Who knows what was going on in this young man's life."

Police with several dogs searched the area through the night, and residents of nearby homes were notified by reverse 911 to be on the lookout. Medina said residents were asked to look out their windows to see if the snow had been disturbed during the night. About 4 inches of snow had fallen in the area in the past day.

Mimi Martin, who lives near the center, said she received the warning call at about 9 a.m. warning neighbors to keep their doors and windows locked.

"Why would anybody want to hurt those kids?" Martin said. "I just pray for their families."

The dormitory is on the campus of the Faith Bible Chapel, but is unaffiliated with the church. People bundled up against freezing cold arrived for Sunday services at the sanctuary, about 300 yards from the dormitory.

Darv Smith, director of a Youth With a Mission center in Boulder, said people ranging from their late teens to their 70s undergo a 12-week discipleship course that prepares them to be missionaries.

He said the center trains about 300 people a year.

Youth With a Mission was started in 1960 and now has 1,100 locations with 16,000 full-time staff, Smith said. The Arvada center was founded in 1984.
