Graphic details of the fatal injuries suffered by the victims of the July 7 bombings have been sent to their relatives, it emerged today.
The postmortem reports, which give information on how those caught up in the blasts died, were sent out on behalf of coroner Dr Andrew Reid.
Some recipients said the reports arrived by post without prior warning, but officials have denied acting in an insensitive manner.
A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: "It is certainly not the intention of coroner or the Ministry of Justice to add to the distress of bereaved families.
"Postmortem reports are only sent to families who request them, as recommended in the 1999 Model Charter for Coroners.
"Dr Reid advised the department that a number of families who lost loved ones on 7 July 2005 had requested postmortem reports.
"Coroners always try to ensure postmortem reports are released in a sensitive manner."
The documents were sent out in a package which contained a covering letter advising that the report was in an enclosed, sealed envelope.
A spokeswoman for Dr Reid said the coroner had regularly contacted the victims' families to update them on the progress of the inquests.
He had also offered to talk through evidence with relatives to ensure any questions they had were satisfactorily answered.
She said: "This is never going to be easy for those who have lost loved ones." She added that anyone who wanted an explanation of why the reports were sent should contact Dr Reid immediately.
"Dr Reid and the coroner's officers have always tried to treat all families involved equally and felt they had taken adequate precautions to allow those who had received the information the choice of whether or not they wished to view it," she said.
Grahame Russell, whose son Philip was killed in the Tavistock Square bus bombing, said he had been aware that the reports were being released.
He said: "I thought it was done very sensitively. It came in an envelope and had a covering letter that said some of the information may be distressing."
A total of 52 innocent people died in the attacks in London in 2005. |
