The fifth July 21 bomber - a "trusted and major participant" in the failed suicide plot to attack London's transport network - has been jailed for 33 years.
Manfo Asiedu, 34, was tasked with exploding his rucksack device on the tube at White City station but "lost his nerve at the last moment" and dumped it in woodland.
Ghanian-born Asiedu, of no fixed address, had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to cause explosions of a nature likely to endanger life between March and July 2005 at a previous hearing.
He sat smartly dressed in a suit in the dock at Kingston Crown Court, south-west London and stared straight ahead as he learned his fate.
Judge Mr Justice Calvert-Smith told him he would serve at least half of his sentence and recommended his deportation on his release.
He said he had lied on an "epic scale" about his involvement in the planning of the attacks in which four bombs were detonated on three tube trains and a bus, but the main charge failed to ignite.
He told Asiedu that he had done nothing to try and stop the "attempted mass murder" of innocent citizens and had denied the public an explanation for the motivation behind this "dreadful crime".
The court had heard that Asiedu had played a key role in buying ingredients for the devices and helped make up the home-made bombs on the eve of the attacks.
He lived in a one-bedroom flat, turned into a bomb-making factory in New Southgate, north London, with some of the men now convicted in connection with the attack. Following the failed suicide attacks he returned to the flat and tried to dispose of incriminating evidence by dumping it in the communal bins.
Asiedu was charged under the names of Sumaila Abubakhari, also known as Manfo Kwaku Asiedu, as he used fake identities since coming to the UK in December 2003. He changed his plea to guilty earlier this month at the last minute ahead of a retrial.

As you may recall the main ones got 40 years and it looks like this one got 33 years due to his cooperation.
It looks like USA style sentancing has arrived.
A murderer gets 14 years if he or she are UNLUCKY.
Yet a bunch of fools with bags of flour get 40 years.
Yes they deserve to go to prison but 40 years and 33 years is a bit harse for carrying bags of flour on the tube. The bombers of 7/7 are meanwhile sunning themselves on the beach in Eilat. |

It's absurd that he was found guilty of conspiracy to cause explosions when presumably he had a detonator with a bag full of flour like the others.
Couldn't they have found themselves some proper lawyers?

I've been meaning to suggest this for ages but I know that most folk think it's nonsense.
When reading media reports about our areas of interest, try and mentally "clock" the numbers of times you see these numbers.

I always had my doubts about Mr Shearer, his swaggering, deft, little englander appearances in the box. His bully boy tactics and those shifty eyes . . .

Dr. Antwi Danso who is a senior lecturer in international relations at the University of Ghana said the jailed would-be bomber had made several conflicting revelations about his name which made his real identity doubtful
It is amazing why there has not been any follow-ups to ascertain his true identity when he was first exposed of bearing a false name.
According to British intelligence sources, Manfo Kwaku Asiedu's real name was given by his counsel, Stephen Kamlish, QC, as Sumaila Abubakhari. However, when he arrived in the UK from Ghana in 2003 he used a passport bearing the name : Georges Nanak Marquaye.
According to Dr. Antwi Danso, the man, Manfo Kwaku Asiedu may after all, not be a true and genuine Ghanaian on account of the conflict of false names he bears.
Dr. Anatwi Danso also held the view that the close diplomatic ties existing between Ghana and the UK would not be affected in anyway with the imprisonment of Manfo Kwaku Asiedu .
There can't be any diplomatic row over this issue because the government had not in anyway tried to interfere with or sought to obstruct the investigation process set into motion after the arrest and trial of the jailed suicide bomber up to the trial period. He told Kessbenews. .
According to Dr. Antwi Danso who was a former Dean of Students at the University of Ghana the whole exercise of international traveling following the 9/11 bombing of the World Trade Centre by al Qaeda operatives creates a lot of discomfort. Now any body can be made to go through so much discomfort in obtaining visas or passing through the various airports. One can be searched in a manner that raises serious concerns its like everybody is a suspect and must be subjected to a thorough body check.. Nobody is excluded.
Manfo Kwaku Asiedu was accused of being the fifth bomber on the 21st July 2005 suicide bombing attempt in London. However, he later portrayed himself as a reluctant bomber He appeared before a Woolwich Crown Court in London and jailed 33 years after admitting conspiracy to cause explosions.
Four other men were jailed for life after being convicted of conspiracy to murder over the failed bombings. They are Muktar Ibrahim, Yassin Omar, Ramzi Mohammed and Hussain Osman. A sixth man, Adel Yahya, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge earlier this month and was jailed for six years and nine months. |
Remember that this chap "pleaded guilty" to a charge that was dropped against his co-accused.
