I've been wanting to do this, and know it must have taken a long time.

Unfortunately, the New York Court of Appeals (highest court in tha state) allowed the NY Fire Department to redact the oral histories to protect were redacted, as I discuss in comments here:

It's hard to know what was redacted, because the standard was "could cause serious pain or embarassment to interviewees if they were disclosed."

Maybe it's not worth even considering the redactions and work with what we have, as you have done.
