New bird flu outbreak announced by BBC from Defra news release.
No details on BBC or Defra web sites as yet.
BBC claim the strain has been identified as H5 (not H5N1 so far) strain, which would indicate that tests have already been done.
The location is Diss, Norfolk. _________________ The Medium is the Massage - Marshall McLuhan.

Fresh case of bird flu in turkeys
BBC breaking news graphic
A fresh case of bird flu has been confirmed on the Norfolk-Suffolk border, government officials say.
Defra said the H5 strain had been found in turkeys at a site near Diss. The site also houses ducks and geese and all the birds will be slaughtered.
A 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone are being set up to restrict movements in the area and try to stop the disease spreading further.
Defra said it was consulting on what further measures may be needed.
Inside the zones, bird movements will be restricted and all birds must be housed or isolated from contact with wild birds.
All poultry keepers on the British poultry register will be notified and EU officials has been informed, Defra said. |

Quote: | Avian Influenza H5 confirmed in Suffolk
Helpline
If you need advice on avian flu please call the Defra Helpline on
08459 33 55 77 between 6.00am - 10.00pm Monday to Friday.
Defra has today confirmed Avian Influenza in turkeys on a premises near Diss on the Norfolk/Suffolk border after preliminary tests were positive for the H5 strain. The premises also contain ducks and geese. All birds on the premises will be slaughtered.
Full confirmation of results, including whether or not this is H5N1 and whether the strain is high or low pathogenic will follow.
A 3km Protection Zone and a 10km Surveillance Zone are being established around the Infected Premises. Inside these zones bird movements will be restricted and all birds must be housed or otherwise isolated from contact with wild birds. We are also urgently considering with ornithological and other experts what wider measures may be needed.
All poultry keepers on the GB Poultry Register will be notified, and the EU Commission has been informed. |

Today's confirmation that the strain at Diss is H5 follows the previous H5N1 case in the UK at the Bernard Matthews turkey farm at Holton, Diss.
The world still waits for a definitive explanation of how the Holton "outbreak" occurred.
Vets were first called to Holton on 1.2.7
9 months and 11 days ago. _________________ The Medium is the Massage - Marshall McLuhan. |

You may recall the case of the dead swan that was found during an avian flu exercise in Cellardyke, Scotland.
This proved to be the UK's first case of the deadly H5N1 strain which was confirmed on 6.4.6
Today's confirmation of the H5 outbreak at Diss marks 1 week & 19 months since the Cellardyke confirmation.
Defra announced on 9.11.2007 that Debbie Reynolds, the Chief Vet was taking "early retirement". Not sure if she has gone yet or who is the Chief Vet now.
The UK had only just been declared an "avian flu free zone" on Oct 6th. _________________ The Medium is the Massage - Marshall McLuhan. |

First it was swine fever, then foot and mouth, then bird flu, then blue tongue, now bird flu again. IIRC flu epidemics are more favoured in autumnal outbreaks rather than spring.
As someone who lives about 11 miles from diss, about the same from Baylham (where Bluetongue first surfaced) and about 18 miles from holton, it has always struck me that in the middle of the area is the Huntingdon Life Sciences animal testing lab at Occold
http://www.shac.net/HLS/exposed/occold_index.html
It has also struck me today that we have had a massive road fuel increase in the last week - from 95.8 - 105.8, the wheat crops this year were poor, veg crops got flooded out in many areas and now there's a turkey cull. food prices will be very high this winter. |

I wish I'd posted the copy now but earlier today, either the East Anglian Daily Press or the East Anglian Daily Times reported that the farm is in Redgrave, which neither now mention in their reports.
BBC have this:
Quote: | The H5 strain was found in turkeys at Redgrave Park Farm near Diss. |
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7091284.stm
I can't find a Redgrave Park Farm !
The Guardian has it as Grange Farm:
Quote: | The discovery of the virus on the free-range farm, named by sources as Grange Farm, Redgrave, owned by Gressingham Foods, comes after a summer of misery for the farming industry already hit by foot and mouth and bluetongue. |

VIVA - Vegetarians Voice for Animals have this item on Grange Farm:
Quote: | Note: Viva! stopped Kerry Foods debeaking ducks in 2000 as part of its ongoing campaign against the factory farming of ducks. We filmed at a unit in Suffolk that showed filthy, injured, bleeding, dying ducks in a packed shed in 1999 (shown on GMTV). Hillside also filmed ducks at Grange Farm, Redgrave, UK in 2001 - again ducks that are blind, filthy, have diffulty walking (shown on Anglia TV) |

Obviously we know we cannot trust the accuracy of the BBC on anything these days.
So, if the Guardian are correct then it's the Grange Farm at IP22 1SA
That'll be home to the famous Gressingham Duck:
Gressingham Foods - About Us.
Quote: | About Us
Gressingham Foods is a family business, and it shows.
We are dedicated to the welfare of the poultry we rear, the well being of our staff and the satisfaction of our customers.
Gressingham Foods Directors William and Geoffrey Buchanan, pictured with parents Miriam and Maurice, who founded Gressingham Foods in 1971
The business was formerly known as Green Label Foods, however; in 2006 we changed our name to Gressingham Foods after our best selling product, the Gressingham Duck.
We are the only company in the world licensed to produce the unique Gressingham breed and most of our customers already knew us as the 'Gressingham Duck people'.
Gressingham Foods operates a fully integrated production system, with breeding, hatching, growing and processing all taking place within a small area of East Anglia.
Situated on an old airfield in rural Suffolk, our factory occupies a 3 acre site and our farms total around 300 acres.
Our ducks are carefully reared and cared for to our exacting welfare standards. See our Animal Welfare frequently asked questions and answers.
We are approved suppliers to Sainsbury’s (the UKs leading duck retailer), Budgens, Somerfield and Booths, as well as cash and carry outlets including Makro, Booker and Costco.
We also supply the food service sector including Brakes, and to wholesalers who supply to independent butchers and the top hotels and restaurants throughout the UK. |

When your usual headline is 'pig stuck in tree' they do get a bit over excited, after all they're all disappointed that their friday night flooding specials came to nothing last week. they were all geared up for a disaster that never (thankfully) happened.
I can't remember what they do at Debach. I know that a phenomenal number of ducks are slaughtered each day, and their feet are shipped to china would you believe! As grange farm is listed as an abbatoir, it could be the processing plant for the ducks reared at park farm. |

Quote: | “Ministers must pull out all the stops to contain this outbreak and identify its source.”
The RSPB’s Andre Farrar warned against jumping to the conclusion that the disease had spread to poultry from wild birds.
The autumn migration was largely over, and no wild birds had been found with avian flu in Europe since late August/early September, he added.
“Last time people went on a mad whirl of speculation on how wild birds had moved the virus and it turned out not to be the case,” he said.
“How it got into this farm needs to be a matter of urgent scrutiny.” |

Surprise surprise.
Defra:
Quote: | Update 16:00 13 November
Following further test results from the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA) the Acting Chief Veterinary Officer has confirmed that the strain of Avian Influenza present at the Infected Premises near Diss is the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain. Further characterisation of the virus is in progress, which may give an indication of the origin of the strain.
Local authorities and Animal Health are enforcing a 3km Protection Zone, a 10km Surveillance Zone and a wider Restricted Zone covering the whole of Suffolk and most of Norfolk around the Infected Premises. In these zones, movement restrictions will be imposed and poultry must be isolated from wild birds. In addition, it has been announced that the national general licence on bird gatherings has been revoked, and bird shows and pigeon racing will not be permitted for the time being.
A full epidemiological investigation and tracings of any dangerous contacts are underway and all possible sources of the outbreak will be investigated. |
Yeah, we know.
You said that back in February too but we're none the wiser as to the origins of the Holton outbreak are we.
I wonder how many iterations of possible sources we're going to get this time.
On Sky News the acting Chief Vet, states that the strain is similar to the recent strains found in Germany and the Czech Republic. _________________ The Medium is the Massage - Marshall McLuhan. |

Just to confirm then that today's confirmation comes 9 months and the 11th day since the previous UK confirmation on 3.2.7

maybe they've had enough practice now
interesting that the EDP (and Diss Mercury) got it right and announced it so early. just waiting for the restricted zone sign to go up again, i might have a new avatar!

I've been here about a year or so now and have watched Mark count days and months (and sometimes years) between events. at first i thought it was some kind of wierd obsessive compulsive disorder but there really do seem to be some intriguing patterns there. i will be very wary in 9 months and 10 days - keep up the good work mate |

Well, what we have now is the second amazing coincidence of two identical patterns linking three very important events.
The first H5N1 Avian Flu "outbreak" in commercial poultry within the EU was confirmed in France on 25.6.6 as reported here by the Grauniad.
Quote: | France confirms bird flu on poultry farm
Associated Press
Saturday February 25, 2006
Guardian Unlimited
The European Union's first outbreak of the lethal H5N1 strain of bird flu in commercial poultry was confirmed today in France, the EU's largest poultry producer. |
The first H5N1 outbreak in commercial poultry in the UK then followed with confirmation at Holton on 3.2.7
This was 11 months and 9 days after the French "event".
Now we have our 2nd H5N1 "outbreak" in the UK, confirmed today 13.11.7
9 months and the 11th day of the 1st.
Which is uncannily like these, similarly linked events in Hungary:
Quote: | The previous avain flu "outbreak" that occurred in Hungary was confirmed as the H5 strain on 15.2.6
Quote: | HEALTH NEWS ARCHIVE
Latest headlines » News from 16 February 2006 »
Hungary confirms bird flu outbreak
Hungary has become the seventh European country to confirm an outbreak of the bird flu virus.
Hungarian authorities detected an H5 subtype of virus in three dead wild swans in the southern county of Bacs Kiskun, the European commission said yesterday. |
The next "outbreak" of H5N1 avain flu in Hungary was discovered in geese and was confirmed as H5N1 on 24.1.7
Quote: | European outbreaks
In Hungary, H5N1 was confirmed in a flock of over 3,000 geese on a farm in the south-eastern county of Csongrád on 24 January. |
|
As above, an interval of 11 months and 9 days. _________________ The Medium is the Massage - Marshall McLuhan.

so perhaps we will see another farm hit in 9 days and 11 hours, or 11 days and 9 hours. might be worth looking at the co-ordinates of the outbreaks too, like the 33deg33mins n and e of mt hermon |

Don't know at the mo, I've sent an FOI into Defra.
The H5N1 "outbreak" in Feb was first notified the day after phase 1 of Exercise Winter Willow, which is described as:
Quote: | Stage 1 comprised of a national-level tabletop exercise meeting of the Civil Contingencies Committee and Ministerial Group on Civil Contingencies, which simulated UK alert level 2 (first UK cases) of WHO Phase 6. This was supported by a credible and realistic scenario developed from that which was used in Exercise Shared Goal. |
This was a human flu pandemic exercise. _________________ The Medium is the Massage - Marshall McLuhan. |

Quote: | Massive bird flu cull launched
A further 68,000 birds are being slaughtered on a sixth poultry farm in Suffolk in a bid to control the outbreak of bird flu in the region.
Defra officials say the latest cull - more than double the other five combined - is precautionary and falls within the existing surveillance zone.
The move comes amid fears that workers at the farm have travelled to other farms that are deemed a flu risk.
More than 28,600 turkeys, ducks and geese have already been slaughtered.
Acting Chief Veterinary Officer Fred Landeg said the move is based on new information about exposure risk and stressed that all poultry keepers must immediately report any signs of the disease.
Employee movement
A spokeswoman at the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said the latest farm is owned by the same company that operates Redgrave Park Farm near Diss, on the Norfolk-Suffolk border, where the virus was first detected earlier this month.
The spokeswoman said employee routes between the farms are being monitored for signs of the disease spreading.
A 3km protection zone and 10km surveillance zone were immediately set up, and remain in place.
The sixth cull will include 56,000 ducks, 9,000 turkeys and 3,000 geese.
Bird flu has been confirmed at both the original site of the outbreak and one other nearby site owned by the same company.
The latest premises to be added to the cull list supplied poultry to the farm at the centre of the outbreak, but this latest move is more linked to employee movement, the spokeswoman said.
Tests negative
On Tuesday it was confirmed that turkeys culled at two other farms over fears they had been exposed to the disease tested negative.
These were Stone House, in West Harling, and Bridge Farm, in Pulham, both in Norfolk.
On Monday, tests showed birds at Hill Meadow Farm in Knettishall on the Norfolk/Suffolk border had been infected with H5N1, a strain of the virus at the centre of fears that it may mutate and cause an epidemic among humans.
Another of the farms, Grove Farm, Botesdale, Suffolk was upgraded to a slaughter site on suspicion of having the disease last week, after dozens of birds were found dead by officials.
But initial tests on 5,500 turkeys slaughtered found the premises were free of disease.
A variant of the deadly H5N1 strain is capable of being transmitted to humans. |

Wondered why it's all gone quiet?
DEFRA
Quote: | NEWS RELEASE
Ref: 444/07
Date: 29 November 2007
Nobel House, 17 Smith Square, London SW1P 3JR
Out of hours telephone 020 7270 8960
First Suffolk avian influenza epidemiology report published
Defra has today published the initial epidemiology report into the H5N1 avian influenza outbreak in Suffolk.
The report concludes that, at the time of writing, the outbreak is confined to the index case which is also the first case and a secondary case as a result of transmission by vehicles, people or other things on the sites.
It has not been possible, at this stage, to categorically identify the source of the outbreak. This initial report states that no evidence has so far been found to indicate introduction via infected poultry or poultry products or vehicles/people transporting them, from countries which have undisclosed infection in their domestic turkey, geese and duck population.
Wild birds cannot be ruled out as a source of infection. The report states that, to date, there is no evidence of H5N1 infection in the local wild bird population or in GB as a whole, but the continued surveillance may help clarify the infection status of the wild bird population.
Further surveillance, testing and epidemiological work on this outbreak is ongoing. |
