Old story from February 2002 to May 2003 when he finally resigned

THE governor-general of Australia, Peter Hollingworth, fended off fresh calls for his resignation last night as controversy mounted over his alleged mishandling of child sexual abuse within the Anglican Church.

Dr Hollingworth, the former archbishop of Brisbane, has been accused of complicity in a cover-up of abuse during his time in that office.

He told an Australian Broadcasting Corporation programme that he would co-operate with any investigation into the claims, but insisted that he would complete his term as the Queen's representative in Australia. Barbie Dutter, Brisbane.

AUSTRALIA is looking for a governor-general after Peter Hollingworth buckled under mounting political and public pressure and resigned as the Queen’s representative.

In a written statement Dr Hollingworth said that he had reached the decision because of the controversy surrounding his handling of child sexual abuse cases in the Anglican Church when he was Archbishop of Brisbane.

He had been under pressure for several months to quit after a Church report criticised his decision not to dismiss a paedophile priest, a decision which he acknowledged was a serious error of judgment....
