As two sex killers caught by the database were jailed for life yesterday and a senior detective joined calls for a universal register, the European Court of Human Rights will hear a case that could mean 560,000 DNA samples being destroyed. Two people charged with offences but never convicted will ask the court next week to remove their records from the database. If they succeed, 13 per cent of the 4.3 million profiles collected since 1995 would have to be destroyed.

Nobody appears to be raising the issue that random killings where there is no other evidence to identify possible suspects are not common - tragic though these cases are and the urge for justice understandable, do these cases in any way justify mass DNA collection? Or do we all get carried away because a couple of people have just been sentenced?

Did anyone see C4 news last night? Some woman was on opposing a national DNA database and the presenter was virtually shouting at her.
