Bug row officer fears for safety - Officer 'pressurised' to bug MP - "I believe it puts my life and safety at risk" - Bugging an MP made a "liar" of the PM because it broke previous conventions
BBC Tuesday, 5 February 2008, 12:23 GMT
The ex-police officer who claims he bugged an MP's visit to a jailed constituent says his life is "at risk" after the case was leaked to the media.
Mark Kearney, a former police intelligence officer at Woodhill Prison in Milton Keynes, says he did not think it was right to bug MP Sadiq Khan.
But he claimed the Met Police put him under "significant pressure" to do so.
Shadow home secretary David Davis said bugging an MP made a "liar" of the PM because it broke previous conventions.
He spoke out as it emerged that officials in the Home Office and Ministry of Justice were told in December of the incident.
Mr Davis told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that it was apparent that Mr Straw and Ms Smith were "not in charge of their departments".
"Why was this allowed to happen without any ministerial knowledge?" he asked.
In a statement prepared by his solicitors, Mr Kearney said there was "significant pressure from the Metropolitan Police requesting that we covertly record a social visit between a terrorist detainee and a member of Parliament".

Reminds us of the "accidental" death of most of the air-crew who were involved with the missing nuclear warhead in the US last year.

Would be interesting to know what else this whistleblower has let out the bag. Apparently "passing sensitive information to the press"

Must be something juicy if he feels his life could be at risk

Local copper: Met secret police SO15 requested MP bugging
and an interesting twist
“I’ve been put through this hell for allegedly taking stories from a policeman – but I knew about this in May 2005 and this is the first the country knows about it. I didn’t even ask him the name of the MP when he told me about the bugging because you don’t do that to friends – you don’t put them on the spot.”
Journalist fears she is "smokescreen" in Sadiq Khan bugging scandal
5 February 2008
By Dominic Ponsford
Press Gazette
Milton Keynes Citizen journalist Sally Murrer today described the revelations about the bugging of MP Sadiq Khan as the missing piece in the jigsaw about her case.
Murrer has been at the centre of a huge police inquiry since May last year when she was accused of “aiding and abetting misconduct in a public office”. Her co-defendant – the policeman accused of illegally giving her stories – is Mark Kearney, the Thames Valley Police officer who this week revealed he had twice been ordered to bug the phone of MP Sadiq Khan in Woodhill Prison in 2005 and 2006.
Murrer, a part time journalist and mother of three, has herself been bugged and tracked by police and been locked up twice during questioning – once for 30 hours.
She now feels that fear on the part of the police that her friend Kearney was going to blow the whistle on the bugging of Khan may explain the huge investigation into them both under the “misconduct in a public office” charge.
She said today: “I think this is the missing part of the jigsaw that I’ve been searching for eight months now. During the whole investigation I have wondered what it is I was supposed to have done.”
...................
“The way I was treated it felt like they wanted to crack me and stop me writing anything ever again – they nearly did, I was a gibbering wreck for a while.”
Murrer is due to appear at court again next week for a plea and directions hearing and believes her full trial may still be a year away.
She said: “I’m hoping that somebody somewhere will look at this and ask whether it t was a fair, balanced and thorough investigation or a smokescreen...........
........“I’ve been put through this hell for allegedly taking stories from a policeman – but I knew about this in May 2005 and this is the first the country knows about it. I didn’t even ask him the name of the MP when he told me about the bugging because you don’t do that to friends – you don’t put them on the spot.”

Detective who bugged MP 'was bugged himself'
By Gordon Rayner, Daily Telegraph's Chief Reporter
06/02/2008
The retired detective at the centre of the Sadiq Khan bugging case was bugged for months by fellow officers as part of a "witch-hunt" intended to stop him becoming a whistleblower, it has been claimed.
Former Detective Sergeant Mark Kearney, 49, was subjected to months of surveillance with his friend Sally Murrer, a local newspaper reporter, ostensibly because police suspected him of giving tip-offs on local crime stories.
But Mrs Murrer, 49, is convinced the huge police investigation, in which her car was bugged and secretly fitted with a tracking device, was a "smokescreen" to ensure Mr Kearney was discredited before he could go public with details of how he was ordered to bug the MP.........

.......The security source also alleged that police installed secret surveillance cameras in the roof of the visiting hall without the knowledge of prison staff.
The source added: "Some of the cameras in the roof no-one knew about. I caught them watching it on the monitors before they could turn it off. It's like a poker game - everything's kept so close to the chest. We were normally the last to know.......
