Kingston retrial of four alleged 7/7 bombers friends

Three men accused of acting as a reconnaissance team for the 7/7 London bombers face a retrial today at Kingston Crown Court.

The jury at the original trial failed to reach a verdict. The men are charged with conspiracy to cause an explosion between 2004 and 2005, a charge they deny.

Prosecutors allege that Waheed Ali, Sadeer Saleem and Mohammed Shakil sought out targets on a trip to London 16 and 17 December 2004. Also that one of the 7/7 bombers, Hasib Hussian, travelled with them.

Ali and Shakil also deny a second charge of conspiracy to attend a place used for terrorist training.


The 'targets'

The London Eye, the Natural History Museum and the London Aquarium were just some of their stops.

Also of importance is their supposed reconnaissance of various Underground stations. Something the Prosecutor Neil Flewitt QC said "bore a striking similarity" to the final targets chosen by the bombers. The court was told how they met another of the eventual bombers, Jermain Lindsay, on the trip.


Met and knew bombers

The accused argue that the trip was purely social, with a visit to Mr Ali's sister, and although they accept knowing all the bombers, it was entirely innocent. They admit travelling to London.

Khan, Tanweer, Lindsay and Hussain killed 52 people in four separate suicide bombings on London's transport network.

Mr. Flewitt continued:

"It is not the prosecution's case that the defendants were directly involved in the London bombings in the sense that they were responsible for making or transporting the bombs that were detonated with such catastrophic consequences.

"However, it is the case that the defendants associated with and shared the beliefs and objectives of the London bombers - and so were willing to assist them in one particular and important aspect of their preparation for the London bombings."

Two men accused of helping the 7 July London bombers plan the attacks were arrested as they set out for a "terror training camp", a jury has been told.

They were held at Manchester Airport in March 2007 as they were about to board a flight to Pakistan, prosecutors said.

Waheed Ali, 25, and Mohammed Shakil, 32, are on trial at Kingston Crown Court with Sadeer Saleem, 28.

The trio, from Leeds, deny conspiring with the bombers to cause explosions between November 2004 and July 2005.

They are said to have visited London on 16 and 17 December 2004 for a reconnaissance of potential targets.

Mr Ali and Mr Shakil also deny a second charge of conspiring to attend a place used for terrorist training.

Jermaine Lindsay, Mohammad Sidique Khan, Shehzad Tanweer and Hasib Hussain left 52 dead and hundreds more injured when they set off bombs on London's transport network on 7 July 2005...............

Any further news on this re-trial please? When the next hearing is, etc?

Normal and advanced searches on Google News and a few other engines turn up absolutely no newpaper reports on this re-trial from 1 February to 21 March 2009. Someone else could try see if they come up with something? Seems strange that there should be no interest anymore? Is it turning into a "secret Starchamber" trial?

All I have found are the following snippets from the Court News UK website:-
