British Sailors & Marines siezed by Iranians
Sky News
British Forces Held By Iran
Updated: 13:21, Friday March 23, 2007
The Government is demanding the "immediate and safe return" of 15 British sailors and Marines seized by Iranian forces.
They were taking part in a routine operation boarding merchant ships in Iraqi territorial waters when they were taken captive by Iranian naval vessels.
The sailors and Marines had completed a successful inspection of one ship, reportedly a dhow, when the group and their two boats were surrounded.
They were then escorted by Iranian vessels into its territorial waters.
The men, from the Type 22 frigate HMS Cornwall, are believed to have been seized in the Shatt Al Arab waterway.
The Royal Navy insists they were operating in Iraqi waters and not Iranian territory.
Forces seized by Iranians It is thought the operation was part of a crackdown on smugglers.
A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "We are urgently pursuing this matter with the Iranian authorities at the highest level.
"And on the instructions of the Foreign Secretary, the Iranian ambassador has been summoned to the Foreign Office.
"The British Government is demanding the immediate and safe return of our people and equipment."
The incident comes at a time of renewed tensions with Iran over Tehran's nuclear programme.
It also coincides with fresh claims of Iranian interference in Iraq.
UK commanders say Iran is arming and funding insurgents attacking British troops.

On the BBC lunchtime news they said they were "snatched" while in Iranian waters. A bit like we "snatch" illegal immigrants over here perhaps.

The oil markets have reacted oh so swiftly and predictably by raising the price per barrel to a 3 month high.
Great business plan this.

Snatched, in the Hezballah capturing Isr...Entity soldiers fashion ( I nearly said it) and we all know what happened there.
Could it be a card to get the recently snatchted Iranians out of jail with?
Unarmed? Sheah right.

With humble apologies to the date insensitives.
Iran previously arrested 8 British sailors on 21.6.2004
Today's event follows the last by 33 months and 3 days.

You know also of course that today is also 223 (months and days) into the year.

Who knows what the truth is... could it be that the British Sailors & Marines were ordered into Iranian waters and then engaged, as the UK/US know events like this could pre-empt the much sought after attack on Iran.

Astounding.
I repeat that Sky News report that the oil price has leaped.
You contradict that information.
You then confirm that it is true.
Yet you still didn't make an error.
That really is magic.
How do you do that ?

it's called the passage of time mark.
like claiming "today is saturday" today i would be wrong, come tomorrow i will be correct.
at the time you claimed that oil prices were risen were wrong, they now have.

So according to johndoe, Mark Gobell reported a rise in oil prices over half an hour before it actually happened. Doesn't this sound something like the BBC reports of WT7?
How do you account for your advance knowledge of this stock market activity, Mark Gobell?
Or maybe, as is becoming more apparent day by day, johndoe is just a *!

"So Sky News had a crystal ball did they ?"
on something as predictable as the stock market? yep. or maybe tickers are slow to respond.
"How do you account for your advance knowledge of this stock market activity, Mark Gobell?"
apparently sky told him.

Back to the alledged seizure of UK military personnel by Iran today.
What is the motivation behind it ?
If the seizure was made in Iranian waters then they are quite within their rights to do so.
Is the story as simple as that ?

A couple of possibilities spring to mind, could've been an SAS/SBS advance team drop off gone wrong or could just be made up entirely to stir friction ahead of a more outrageous pretext. Wars have been started over less though, lets not forget.

Bush doesnt seem to need much persuasion these days to go and invade a country rich in oil or blocking the oil pipeline but us Brits need to be persuaded that the Iranian leaders are really a nasty bunch of guys who need invading and sorting out. But of course just arresting them for trespass will not be enough. Live executions on TV or perhaps killed trying to escape would do the trick.

Just in case johndoe doesn't know SAS/SBS means Special Air Service (army) and Special Boat Service (Royal Marines) special forces who might well be on a "fishing expedition" ie snooping where they don't belong.

It was a "rountine boarding operation' yeah! Like the two Brit guys wearing arab head-dress with ammo in the back seat of the car they were driving. Wearing arab head-dress, well, because of the hot weather! Natch!

Apparently the crew of the frigate Cornwall witnessed the capture of the british sailors/marines. One wonders why, if in Iraqi waters, they didn´t intervene, I´m sure they have armed helicopters on board.

Good point Alf.
They interviewed the Captain of HMS Cornwall and he said that the whole thing was being watched by their helicopter while it was happening.

"It was a "rountine boarding operation' yeah!"
we do it all the time, the UN has given us the right to do so.
"ie snooping where they don't belong."
there is currently no evidence except harping from the iranians (what a trust worthy lot they are) that they were outside iraqi waters.

It seems unlikely that the Iranians would venture out into Iraqi waters and kidnap marines knowing that the result would be the invasion of their country. Makes no sense to me. More likely is that the marines were in Iranian waters and were doing something they shouldn't.
