Candidates pile up for election
By Deirdre Walsh
Kerryman Newspaper, Thursday April 6th 2006.

VOTERS in the Kerry North constituency are set to have a wider choice
of candidates to vote for when they go to the polls in the next general
election, with the Green Party confirming that it will be running a
candidate, and at least two Independents believed to be keen to go
forward.

To date, Fianna Fáil has selected sitting TD Thomas McEllistrim and
Cllr Norma Foley to contest the three-seat constituency, while Fine Gael’s
Jimmy Deenihan and Sinn Féin’s Martin Ferris will also be seeking
re-election. Labour is expected to unveil its candidate - likely to be
Tralee’s Cllr Terry O’Brien - in the coming weeks.

But it emerged this week that there could be at least two and possibly
three more names on the ballot sheet for North Kerry voters to choose
from.

Chairman of the Green Party in Kerry, David Grey, told The Kerryman
that party members in Kerry will be meeting this Thursday to seek
nominations from candidates interested in contesting the next general election,
likely to be in the spring of next year.

While it’s unlikely that they will run a candidate in the Kerry South
constituency, the Greens are determined to run one in Kerry North, and
Mr Grey, who lives just outside Tralee, has indicated that he himself is
interested.

“I think a lot of voters are fed up with the status quo and with the
fact that the current government isn’t delivering in North Kerry,” he
said. “You only have to look at the jobless figures in Tralee to see that
there is a lot more investment going in to the south of the county. I
think a Green candidate could do very well and we would offer the voters
an alternative.”

Meanwhile Listowel man Morgan Stack, a university lecturer, announced
this week that he will also be running in the Kerry North constituency
as a candidate with the Irish 9/11 Truth Movement - a party set up last
year which claims that 9/11 was “an intelligence operation planned and
conducted by very senior elements in the current Bush administration”.

There are also strong rumours that another Independent candidate may
run in Kerry North on the Kerry General Hospital issue, and that a
Tralee-based candidate who ran in the last local elections as an Independent
is considering putting himself befor the North Kerry electorate as
well.
