60-year horror in the name of religion
By Ameen Izzadeen

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution calls for the separation of church and state. Seemingly, the crux of the first amendment, which also upholds the freedom of information, has been observed. But take another look. You will find that the separation of church and state is observed in the breach.
In no sphere is the First Amendment so blatantly violated than in the US policy towards Israel, which on Wednesday began celebrations to mark its 60th anniversary while the Palestinian people who were forcibly ousted to set up the Zionist state enter their 61st year of horror. Israel's birth is their Naqba — the great catastrophe.
The United States and its Western allies hail the virtues of keeping the church and the state separate and say the separation is essential for democracy to be vibrant. The zeal which is evident in their preaching of secularism makes one wonder whether secularism is synonymous with democracy. Countries like Iran which practises a kind of democracy that mixes religion and politics and political parties which adopt Islam as their guiding principle are looked down upon or scoffed at by the West. They are branded fundamentalists, extremists or fanatics.............

Now why say 'Watch Jerusalem' when Tel Aviv is the capital?

The bottom line is that the longer Israel waits to strike, the more difficult it will become to take out Iran's nuclear program militarily and to endure the fallout diplomatically. At the same time the promised benefits of waiting—the hoped-for diplomatic solution based on economic pressure—seem to be receding. Much depends now on the political survival of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who is engulfed in yet another scandal, this time involving a bribery investigation. But if you're looking for the launch pad of the next global crisis, keep your eyes on Jerusalem.
