What is the real inflation rate?

In the past 12 months the price of diesel has risen from 79p to £1.25 per litre, my shopping bill has risen by 1/3 as have my gas and electricity, the council tax has risen by more than 5% and mortgage rates on 2 year fixed and tracker rates have risen by 1/3.

These are all major items of expenditure in most households, yet we are told that the inflation rate is 3%. WTF is going on?
