I am writing to ask for your assistance for a report I am preparing
for BBC Radio 4's The World Tonight.
I am doing an 'audit' of civil liberties in the UK. I am looking for
case studies of people who have been affected by one of the
government's initiatives in this area. While I understand a lot of
people will hold strong opinions about these issues, I am really
interested in hearing from people who have first hand experience of
the impact of the government's use of data.
In particular I am interested in:
CCTV - do you know of someone who has tried to have CCTV removed from
their city? Or has campaigned not to have it introduced? Or someone
who has been affected by the siting of a camera near them? Or perhaps
has experienced consequences from having images captured by cameras?
Databases - this could be someone who has tried to have themselves
removed from the DNA database. I'd also be interested in hearing from
public sector workers with experience of the roll out of the NHS
database, the Children's Database, Contactpoint and other national
databases. Or it could be an incident from the past or an incident
which has been misinterpreted which is affecting their ability to work
with children?
Protests - do you know of someone whose right to protest has been
curtailed? This could be by the restrictions on protesting near
parliament, the use of anti-terrorism laws to arrest or deter
protesters, of by councils charging for the costs involved in road
closures, policing etc or any other bureaucratic impediment to
protest.
If there are other issues you think are interesting and should be
covered by national media, let me know.
I'd be keen to hear from you, even if you don't have the full details
of the incident or the person - maybe you just read something reported
locally - if you can give me initial information that will allow me to
follow up the lead that's great, and I'll take it on from there.
I also understand the sensitivity of this information. If you want to
talk about this off the record, without committing to recording an
interview I would be delighted to hear from you.
