If only Gorgeous Gordon could find a bit of courage, and do a decisive speech announcing the nationalisation of the entire British banking system with peanuts compensation for shareholders. Massive windfall taxes on electricity, gas and oil companies in the run-up to nationalisation. A pull-out of British forces from Afghanistan and the Middle East. The repeal of Thatcher's anti-trades union legislation. The banning of all Chatham House links to the Foreign Office and re-nationalisation of the railways... he might well ride out the hideous Zionist death he is soon to be subjected to. Alowing him to survive the party conference only serves to add votes to the Tories...... unless Gordon the Lion finds his Dorothy on the Yellow Brick Road
Labour rebels told to hold fire in Gordon Brown leadership row
The back bench coup against Gordon Brown has been put on hold as desperate Cabinet ministers called on rebels to hold their fire until after the Labour Conference.
Following a heated weekend which saw a dozen MPs, including a number of former ministers, openly strike at the Prime Minister, leading Cabinet members took to the airways to call for calm.
Significantly, Geoff Hoon, the Chief Whip, and John Hutton, the Business Secretary, both appeared to imply that the time had not yet come for a leadership contest - leaving the door open to a challenge after next week’s conference.
Mr Hoon said: “I simply don’t think at this stage it’s appropriate. I think it’s a distraction.”
By Sunday night, the call appeared to have been heeded, with no fresh wave of criticism emerging from within the ranks of increasingly rebellious backbenchers.
Nine MPs have so far written to the Labour Party demanding that they be allowed to exercise their right to formally renominate Mr Brown as leader ahead of conference this week, with others expressing their desire for a contest.
They include Joan Ryan, the former Home Office minister, who like Siobhain McDonagh, the junior whip, was sacked from her new post as envoy to Cyprus as a result.
Fiona Mactaggart, another Home Office minister, called on senior ministers to back their junior colleagues and take on Mr Brown.........
