Iran responds to UNSC resolution
http://www.presstv.com/detail.aspx?id=130963&sectionid=351020101
Press TV, 18 June 2010

Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) has issued a declaration in response to a recent UN Security Council resolution against the country.

The following is the full text of the declaration:

In the name of God, the most Gracious and the Merciful

The Islamic Republic of Iran's Declaration in Response to the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1929

The United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 1929 on 9 June 2010. Contrary to the expectation of the international community that the new UNSC resolution would condemn Israel's attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla less than ten days before the adoption of the Resolution, the international community saw once again the United States defending the Zionist regime and thus preventing the Security Council from taking any action against the atrocities The Resolution also ignored the final declaration of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference that was adopted just 15 days earlier by 189 countries. This declaration required the Zionist regime to abide by the NPT. But the international community had not seen a single UNSC resolution condemning the nuclear activities of the Zionist regime. Nor has the Council shown any intention of finding out who has provided nuclear weapons to the Zionist regime.

The reason is clear. Some of the permanent members of the Security Council are principal suspects of this proliferation. The subject of Resolution 1929 is not about the concern over production, manufacturing, proliferation or testing of a new generation of nuclear weapons by permanent members of the Security Council. Also there is no reference to 11 proposals by the Islamic Republic of Iran during the NPT Review Conference concerning disarmament and non-proliferation; the same proposals that received a warm response by the international community. The subject of the Resolution, contrary to all expectations, is the peaceful nuclear activities of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which have been demonized on the basis of false accusation that accusations that have not been proven. On the contrary, the last report by the Director General of the IAEA, published only a day before the Resolution, reiterated for the 22nd time that our activities have not diverted from their peaceful objectives.

Those behind the adoption of this Resolution are exposing themselves to the judgment of the international community under circumstances that the world witnessed adoption of Tehran declaration. This was a declaration that openly and clearly called for peaceful nuclear cooperation without any confrontation with regards to the rights of sovereign nations. The United States encouraged Brazil and Turkey to interact with Iran. This is while one month after the adoption of the Tehran declaration, it was welcomed by the 120 members of the Non-Aligned Movement.

The adoption of Resolution 1929 irrespective of the Tehran declaration and the attack on Gaza Freedom Flotilla has proven the righteousness of the viewpoints of the Islamic Republic of Iran:

1. It proves that the Security Council is not a proper forum to uphold the maintenance of international peace and security and a body to secure the rights of nations. It proves that as long as the United States formally regards itself committed to the security of the Zionist regime and continues to support its atrocities, the Security Council is not able to adopt any resolution condemning the many crimes committed by the Zionist regime.

2. It proves that the United States is becoming more and more discredited and distrusted in the world and that not even the slogan of "change" could restore the US administrations long-lost credibility. The international community clearly witnessed the US Presidents willingness to take the credit of other countries under false pretense. This can be judged by the statements made by President of Brazil and the Prime Minister of Turkey, which are now available to the international community.

3. It has proven the United States is the principal offender in using, proliferating, and testing nuclear weapons, and thus poses the greatest threat to the international community and mostly its own people. How can a regime that is not able to contain an oil well be trusted by the world to contain its arsenal of nuclear weapons that jeopardizes global security?

4. It has been proven that the United Stated tries to distract and redirect world public opinion from the real threats by concocting made-up and fictitious threats. The real threats are the direct results of flawed policies by the American regime in stockpiling nuclear weapons and supporting state terrorism.

5. It has been proven that certain monopolist governments are determined to deprive other nations of peaceful nuclear technology and having access to fuel cycle which are clear examples of the "right to development," "right to natural resources" and the "right to self-determination."

Using the opportunity to demonstrate to the public opinion of the world the above-mentioned viewpoints, the Islamic Republic of Iran declares:

1. Entry of the Security Council into the subject relating to peaceful activities of the Islamic Republic of Iran is illegal, unwarranted and contrary to Article 39 of the Charter. It also fully contravenes the organizational and safeguard requirements of the IAEA. The Council needs to take prompt action in redressing and putting right its past mistakes.

2. The Islamic Republic of Iran openly and clearly declares that any action against the lawful and legitimate rights of people of Iran will be responded by reciprocal lawful actions of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

3. Disappointment of the US administration in receiving the unanimous vote of the members of the Security Council, despite all the unconventional pressure exerted and contacts established by the president, and the fact the international community in the declaration of the Non-Aligned Movement chose not to go along with the will of certain big powers clearly demonstrate the beginning of a new era of international relations to ensure the rights of nations based on justice and respect.

4. We are pleased to see that "Peaceful Nuclear Energy for All, Nuclear Weapons for None" as a human goal, has turned into an opportunity to forge greater cooperation among independent governments and consider it an auspicious phenomenon for defending the fundamental rights of nations. Therefore, we believe that the insistence of the US administration on continuing on the same flawed path is costly, useless and will only result in uncovering the unjust and faulty mask of the Security Council at their own cost and will strengthen the resolve of nations to have fair international relations.

5. The Islamic Republic of Iran emphasizes again the importance of the Tehran declaration as a good foundation for greater solidarity of independent nations in countering the excessive demands by big powers and forging stronger relations for peace, justice and happiness for humankind.

The Brazillian ambassador has some interesting comments:

"Nuclear Diplomacy": Brazil and Iran. Our Motives and the Bullying Trio
by Tomás Rosa Bueno

Despite what the experts of barefoot diplomacy [1] never stop repeating, there is nothing even remotely anti-American in the Brazilian position on Iran: our motives, unlike those of the bullying trio (USA, France, United Kingdom), are clear, transparent and openly stated several times.

We support the peaceful development of nuclear energy. We do not believe there is any evidence that Iran has a secret nuclear-weapons program. Defending Iran, we are defending our own right to master the full nuclear-fuel cycle, we are defending our right to develop our own enrichment technology, we are defending our right to build our own reactors that will move the nuclear submarines that will defend our sovereignty. No more, no less. We want for Iran just what we want for ourselves.

More than twelve U.S. and Israeli warships, including an aircraft carrier, passed through the Suez Canal on Friday and are headed for the Red Sea. “According to eyewitnesses, the U.S. battleships were the largest to have crossed the Canal in many years,” reported the London-based newspaper al-Quds al-Arabi on Saturday.

Joseph Green This article is 'mostly' accurate. However, it's not as incendiary as you are interpreting it to be. I am currently onboard the USS Dwight D Eisenhower, and we are patroling the North Arabian Sea. The ships that passed through the Suez are our relief. It has been scheduled for months, and indicates nothing out of the ordinary.

After Olenka Frenkiel's 2003 film led to a secret BBC agreement not to report Israeli nuclear weapons unfavourably.

Quote:
This programme created such an unremittingly negative view of Israel that it led to the Israeli Government ceasing co-operation with the BBC when it was shown for the second time. This was an unprecedented move by Israel.

Israel's Secret Weapon (Secret Nuclear Weapons) BBC Olenka Frenkiel 2003

Mordechai Vanunu, Israel's nuclear whistleblower, was jailed in 1986 for publishing photographs of Israel's nuclear bomb factory at Dimona. Olenka Frenkiel reveals the extent of Israel's nuclear gagging. The Sunday Times Revelations hit the press in October 1986. Vanunu has spent 17 years in jail, a11 of which were in a minute solitary confinement cell - and he has just had his appeal for parole denied. He will stay in jail until 2004, when his term is expected to end. Sunday Times journalist Peter Hounam heard rumours in 1986 that an Israeli whistleblower was offering proof of what the world had long suspected. His revelations confirmed that Israel was building advanced nuclear weapons. After the Sunday Times published this scoop, Vanunu was kidnapped in London by Mossad agents and illegally smuggled back to Israel. He was tried in secret and convicted of treason and spying.

International agreements require Egypt to keep the Suez open even for warships, but the armada, led by the USS Truman with 5,000 sailors and marines, was the largest in years. Egypt closed the canal to fishing and other boats as the armada moved through the strategic passageway that connects the Red and Mediterranean Seas.

Despite Egypt’s reported refusal to block the canal to Iranian boats, the clearance for the American-Israeli fleet may be a warning to Iran it may face military opposition if the Iranian Red Crescent ship continues on course to Gaza.

Quote:
Recent months have seen increasing tensions between Riyadh and Tehran. Arab regimes are pressing the US to adopt a tougher stance with respect to Iran’s nuclear programme. In a meeting with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Riyadh in February, Saudi Foreign Minister Al-Faisal stated that the Iranian nuclear threat demands “a more immediate solution” than sanctions.
In March, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates helped the US to defuse Chinese opposition to UN sanctions against Iran, by reassuring Beijing that they would increase their oil exports to China, if sanctions against Iran cut the amount of oil China could import from Iran.
In addition to fears of the regional geopolitical implications of Iran’s nuclear programme, the Saudi monarchy is concerned about the internal implications of tensions between the Shiite-populist Iranian regime and the Sunni Saudi monarchy. As a result, it has supported the US and European campaign against Iran.
These concerns were highlighted by the recent war between Shiite Houthi rebels and the US-allied Yemeni government of Ali Abdullah Saleh in northern Yemen, near the border with Saudi Arabia. The Saudi regime worried about the impact of the Houthi uprising on its own southern Shiite population. In November 2009, the Royal Saudi Land Forces entered into Yemen, with the support of joint Saudi-US air raids on rebel strongholds. The conflict resulted in 133 Saudi casualties, with close to 500 soldiers captured or wounded.
US-allied Arab states accused Tehran of backing the Shiite rebels in Yemen and supported the Saudis. In response, Tehran accused Saudi Arabia of waging an unequal war against the Shiite population of Yemen, on orders from Washington.
The longstanding sectarian tensions between Shiite and Sunni Muslims in Saudi Arabia have vast strategic implications for the Saudi regime and the world economy.
Although there is a large population of Shiites on the Yemeni border, Saudi Arabia’s Shiite minority is concentrated in the “Eastern Province,” across the Persian Gulf from Iran. This province contains most of Saudi Arabia’s oil resources. Shiite opposition thus potentially threatens to disrupt Saudi Arabia’s crucial oil production. Saudi Shiites are socially oppressed, facing restrictions on their religious practices and, since the 1980s, on their employment in the oil industry.
These tensions are bound up with the lasting consequences of the 1979 Iranian Revolution. From 1968, the year that Britain announced its withdrawal from the Persian Gulf, until the revolution, the Iranian monarchy regime of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi maintained friendly relations with the Saudi kingdom.
The Saudi regime saw the massive oil strikes that led to the 1979 Iranian Revolution, and the Shiite populist regime that emerged from it, as a deadly threat, however. The Saudi regime feared that opposition to monarchy and US imperialism could spread to its own population, particularly as Tehran appealed to the marginalised Arab Shiite populations against US-allied Arab monarchies. Despite their hostility to the nationalism of the Iraqi Baath party, the Gulf monarchies backed Saddam Hussein in the eight-year Iran-Iraq war, in which they saw Iran as a far more serious threat.
Saudi-Iranian tensions rose dramatically during the “war on terror,” as the US invaded or toppled regimes in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Lebanon—intensifying competition between the Iranian and Saudi governments for influence in the Middle East.
The coming to power of Shiite parties in US-occupied Iraq after 2008—notably the rise of a Shiite anti-occupation movement in Iraq around Moqtada al-Sadr—was a source of deep concern for the Saudi regime. It has been widely suggested that Saudi intelligence was behind numerous bombings in Iraqi Shiite areas that helped push Iraq into sectarian civil war.
The 2005 election of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad led to a more assertive Iranian foreign policy, including stronger support for the Shiite-based Hezbollah movement in Lebanon. Saudi Arabia and the US, however, backed a Lebanese government led by Sunni politicians Fuad Siniora and then Saad Hariri after the 2005 US-backed “Cedar Revolution” in Lebanon.
Iranian reformists around Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and Mohammad Khatami have constantly attacked Ahmadinejad’s foreign policy. Mohammad Abtahi, one of the key organisers of the 2009 Green Movement protests against Ahmadinejad’s re-election, said in 2006: “[A]t a time when all the Arab and Islamic states are at their lowest level of diplomatic relation with Iran, Ahmadinejad’s visit to left-wing Latin American countries to resurrect the Socialist-Communist axis would entail a huge cost for the Iranian Muslim nation.”
As part of the broader US strategy against the Ahmadinejad government in Tehran, media in US-allied Arab countries are waging a press campaign together with elements of the Green movement.
According to Iraqi news network “Nahrain Net”, Saudi intelligence last month instructed Saudi-financed media throughout the Gulf to launch a campaign against Ahmadinejad and promote the Green opposition on the anniversary of the Iranian presidential election. The goal of the Saudis, according to the Nahrain Net’s report, was to “demonstrate that there is a real crisis in Iran,” and that “the events in the last 12 months have boosted the reformists vis-à-vis Ahmadinejad.”
European sources that leaked the news also claimed that the “Iran Section” of Saudi intelligence has been trained in the US and Britain and familiarised with the views of various sections of the Iranian opposition.
One such media is Al-Arabiya news television station, which rivals Qatar’s Al-Jazeera and Iranian-owned Alalam in the Arab world. Al-Arabiya launched a Persian website before the June 2009 election and has dedicated the website to the views of mostly London-based Green opposition leaders such as Ataollah Mohajerani.
Mohajerani also frequently appears in BBC Persian TV, as a spokesman for the Green opposition. Alireza Nourizadeh, the director of the Centre for Arab & Iranian Studies in London and a Western intelligence asset who promotes the Green movement, is also a frequent source in al-Arabiya TV channel discussions on Iran.
Alleged connections between the Green movement and the Gulf regimes was the subject of intense debate in the 2009 Iranian presidential election. In his debate with reformist candidate Mirhossein Mousavi, Ahmadinejad accused Rafsanjani of colluding with a Gulf country in 2005, shortly after Rafsanjani’s defeat in the presidential election, to subvert his government: “Mr. Hashemi sent a message to one of the kings in a neighbouring country that he would overthrow the new government in six months.”

Reports: IAF Landed at Saudi Base, US Troops near Iran Border

by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu

The Israeli Air Force recently unloaded military equipment at a Saudi Arabia base, a semi-official Iranian news agency claimed Wednesday, while a large American force has massed in Azerbaijan, which is on the northwest border of Iran.

Both reports follow by less than a week the Pentagon’s confirmation that an unusually large American fleet sailed through the Suez Canal Saturday. Several reports stated that an Israeli ship joined the armada.

The Pentagon played down the news, saying the American maneuvers were routine. However, a report by Iran on Wednesday that it has enriched dozens of pounds of 17 per cent enriched uranium serves as a reminder that time is running out to stop Iran from being able to produce a nuclear weapon.

Iran’s Fars News Agency said the Israeli military aircraft landed 10 days ago at the Saudi base near the city of Tabuk, located in northwest Saudi Arabia, one of the closest areas in the oil kingdom to Iran.

Fars said that the Tabuk base will be the central station for an Israeli attack on Iran. It quoted an Islamic news site that a commercial airline passenger said the airport in Tabuk was closed to all other traffic during the alleged Israeli landings. The passenger said that "no reasonable explanation” was given for shutting down the airport and those passengers were compensated financially and booked in four-star hotels.

“The relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel have become the talk of the town,” the passenger added. The chief authority in Tabuk, Prince Fahd ben Sultan, was reported be coordinating the cooperation with Israel.

Azerbaijan
Iran’s government-funded Press TV reported that the Revolutionary Guards began closely patrolling the Islamic Republic’s northwestern border after noticing the American forces, which Iran claimed also included Israeli troops. Azerbaijan’s independent Trend news site also reported on Wednesday that American armed forces are in the country, which is in an armed conflict with rebels.

Revolutionary Guards Brigadier General Mehdi Moini said Tuesday that his forces are mobilized “due to the presence of American and Israeli forces on the western border.” The Guards reportedly have called in tanks and anti-aircraft units to the area in what amounts to a war alert.

As signs point to a higher American-Israeli military profile aimed at Iran, Ali Akbar Salehi, the Islamic Republic’s vice president and director of the nuclear program, announced Wednesday that Iran has produced another 37 pounds of uranium enriched to 20 percent. The production of the uranium defies United Nations demands that Iran stop its unsupervised nuclear development, although the 20 percent level is far below level that is needed to build a nuclear weapon.

"Potentially, we can produce 5 kilograms (11 pounds) a month, but we are not in a hurry over this," Salehi told the semiofficial ISNA news agency. (IsraelNationalNews.com)

http://rawstory.com/rs/2010/0627/report-warships-stationed-iranian-coa st/

As unconfirmed reports of an imminent Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear facilities pick up steam in the Middle Eastern media, a US-based strategic intelligence company has released a chart showing US naval carriers massing near Iranian waters.

The chart, published by Stratfor and obtained by the Zero Hedge financial blog, shows that over the last few weeks a naval carrier -- the USS Harry S Truman -- has been positioned in the north Indian Ocean, not far from the Strait of Hormuz, which leads into the Persian Gulf. The carrier joins the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, which was already located in the area. The chart is dated June 23, 2010.

Reports of mass movements of Israeli and US naval warships have been circulating through the media for weeks. On June 19, the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz reported that 12 US and Israeli warships were seen moving through the Suez Canal from the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea.

And a report from the Associated Press published Saturday evening cited "unconfirmed" reports from Israeli and Iranian media that Saudi Arabia has allowed Israel to use its territory in preparation for an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities.

"The allegation could not be independently confirmed, and the Saudis deny cooperating with the Israeli military," AP reported.

An article in the Gulf Daily News, largely dismissed by Western observers, did not mention any Saudi involvement but said Israel is preparing to attack Iranian targets from the former Soviet republics of Azerbaijan and Georgia.

The claims that Israel may be preparing for an assault on Iranian nuclear facilities were strengthened this weekend by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who told reporters at the G8 summit in Canada that G8 leaders "believe absolutely" that Israel will "probably" strike Iran.

“Iran is not guaranteeing a peaceful production of nuclear power [so] the members of the G8 are worried and believe absolutely that Israel will probably react preemptively,” Berlusconi said, as quoted at Ha'aretz.

CIA director Leon Panetta said Sunday that Iran has enough enriched uranium to build two nuclear bombs. In an interview on ABC's This Week, Panetta also said he believed the recent spate of international and US sanctions against Iran will not convince the country to change course on its nuclear program.

"Will it deter them from their ambitions with regards to nuclear capability? Probably not," Panetta said.

Lots of Military helicopter action and troop movements going on in Essex!

http://rawstory.com/rs/2010/0627/italian-pm-israel-will-react-preempti vely-iran/

Italian PM: Israel ‘will probably react preemptively’ on Iran

Has the leader of Italy's government revealed how the global community plans to handle Iran?

That's entirely possible, according to a report from Israel which cites Silvio Berlusconi as telling reporters at the G8 summit in Toronto, "Iran is not guaranteeing a peaceful production of nuclear power, [so] the members of the G8 are worried and believe absolutely that Israel will probably react preemptively."

He added that the G8 nations "absolutely believe" Israel will attack Iran, according to Haaretz.

The claim comes on the same day that the top spy in the United States accused Iran of having nuclear material for two bombs, provided the uranium is further enriched to weapons grade. The process, the CIA said, would likely take at least a couple years.

Even Russia, which has traditionally been an ally of Iran's civilian nuclear power program, joined the U.S. in condemning the alleged nuclear weapons ambitions. It is exceptionally rare that the Kremlin publicly comments on a CIA statement.

"This information has to be checked but such information is always worrying and all the more so because the international community does not recognize the Iranian nuclear program as transparent," Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said.

"We are profoundly concerned by Iran's continued lack of transparency regarding its nuclear activities and its stated intention to continue and expand enriching uranium, including to nearly 20 percent," a G8 joint statement read.

Earlier this month the United Nations passed stronger economic sanctions against Iran at the United States' behest. Russia supported the measures, drawing a rebuke from Tehran.

Iran continues to insist its nuclear enrichment efforts are purely for electricity generation.

With AFP.

Well, they have had around 200,000 years of practice, most of it contiguous.

Your posts do help to clarify the Gulf of Aden build up a bit but I still suspect there's an ulterior motive here, beyond the ra-ra jingoism pointed at Iran. Strafor's being cagey, of course; raw story is dubious in its provenance and Janes is so busy telling the public nothing of global importance.

All the result of full-spectrum-disaster-mongery, no doubt. Remember the bizarre report of 5(five) US carriers in the Persian Gulf a while back - where did they 'drift off' to? Off the radar?

Silly b*ggers, all.

Iran is the target for 3 main reasons in my view
In order:-

1. Iran's Islamic moral stance against the man made 'New Age' Western religious value system
2. Some of the largest Uranium ore deposits in the world
3. Oil reserves.

Blasts leave 20 dead in southeast Iran
Thu, 15 Jul 2010 17:51:02 GMT
More than 20 people have been killed and over 100 others have been wounded after two explosions hit the southeastern Iranian city of Zahedan in Sistan-Baluchestan Province.
"Two explosions in the front of Zahedan's Grand Mosque have left more than 20 martyrs and over 100 injured," Fariborz Rashedi, the head of Sistan-Baluchestan's emergency unit told IRNA.
The first explosion occurred at 9:20 p.m. local time (1650 GMT) in front of the city's Grand Mosque, and was followed by a second blast within minutes, IRNA said.
Jalal Sayyah, a police official, said emergency forces have arrived at the scene of the incident, adding that an investigation into the incident was underway.
Deputy Interior Minister Ali Abdollahi described the incident as a "terrorist act," Fars news agency reported.

'West, Israel linked to SE Iran blasts'

Press TV, 16 July 2010

A ranking official with the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has implicated "the US, Israel and some European countries" in the deadly blasts in the southeastern Iranian city of Zahedan.

Yadollah Javani, the head of IRGC's political bureau, said late Thursday that the latest terrorist attack in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan points to the involvement of terrorist groups under the auspices of the United States, Israel and some Western countries, which seek sectarian division, Fars news agency reported.

Two explosions in the front of Zahedan's Grand Mosque on Thursday left more than 20 martyrs and over 100 injured.

The first explosion occurred at 9:20 p.m. local time (1650 GMT) in front of the city's Grand Mosque, and was followed by a second blast within minutes.

"The enemy seeks out division between Shia and Sunni Muslims in order to create chaos in the country," Javani noted.

"One could not doubt the involvement of secret foreign services in the efforts to generate tension amongst Muslims," he further explained.

The Iranian official also noted that confessions made by Abdolmalek Rigi, the Pakistan-based Jundallah terrorist group's ringleader, before his execution last month, unveiled widespread US support for waging an insurgency against the Islamic Republic.

"Rigi's confessions prove that the US, Zionists and some European countries are directly linked with the Zahedan blasts, because he had confessed that the US wants bomb attacks to be carried out across Iran," he said.

After Rigi's execution, Jundallah was effectively disbanded and experts say that the group is highly unlikely to have carried out the latest blasts.

It is widely believed that hard-line Wahabis and Salafis trained by the CIA in Pakistan are the main elements behind the bombings.

Iran accuses US and UK of supporting group behind mosque attacks

CIA denies claims it has been backing Jundullah, the Sunni separatist group which has claimed responsibility for the bombs

* Ian Black, Middle East editor

Iran is vowing to hunt down a Sunni separatist group which claimed responsibility for a double suicide bombing that killed 28 people at a mosque in the south-eastern city of Zahedan.

Jundullah – Arabic for "the soldiers of God" – said it carried out the twin attacks yesterday at Zahedan's grand mosque in retaliation for the execution of the group's captured leader. Provincial officials said a further 167 people were injured, some of them critically. Three days of mourning were declared. General Hossein Salami, deputy commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, claimed in Tehran today that the victims "were martyred by the hands of mercenaries of the US and UK". Ali Mohammad Azad, governor of Sistan-Baluchestan province, blamed "the intelligence services of arrogant powers."

The US and Britain – which are at odds with Iran over its controversial nuclear programme – issued statements condemning the attacks.

Shia worshippers were celebrating the birthday of the prophet Muhammad's grandson Hussein when the first bomb detonated, according to reports from the scene. A second explosion took place 15 minutes later as people rushed to help – a technique used by Sunni groups in Iraq to maximise casualties. The dead reportedly included several Revolutionary Guards.

Iranian media said the aim was to sow discord between Shias and Sunnis in the Sunni majority area, which borders on Pakistan. Zahedan, the capital of Sistan-Baluchestan, has seen several mass casualty attacks in recent years.

In a message sent to al-Arabiyya TV, Jundullah said its intention was to avenge the hanging of Abdulmalik Rigi, the group's leader, in June, after he was captured in Pakistan and extradited to Iran. Rigi's brother Abdelhamid was also executed. Jundullah's website showed pictures of two suicide bombers. They were identified as Mohammad and Mujahid Rigi, apparently members of the leader's clan.

Press-TV, Iran's English-language state broadcaster, alleged that "hardline Wahabis and Salafis trained by the CIA in Pakistan" were behind the bombings. Iran has claimed Rigi confessed that the US had assured him of unlimited aid and funding for the waging an insurgency against the Islamic republic. The US is reported to have a programme of covert operations inside Iran but the CIA has denied backing Jundullah. But Alaeddin Borujerdi, chairman of Iran's parliamentary commission on national security, immediately pointed the finger at the intelligence services of the US, Israel and other western countries. "Such terror operations will not deter Iranian's resolve in fighting against arrogant powers," he told the Irna news agency. Iran was "the main victim" of US-sponsored terrorism, said Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, another MP.

Official commentators suggested an effort to divert attention from the case of the Iranian scientist Sharhram Amiri, allegedly abducted by the CIA in its quest for the secrets of Iran's nuclear programme but who was allowed to return home on Thursday.

Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, condemned the explosions and expressed condolences to relatives of the victims. "This attack, along with the recent attacks in Uganda, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Algeria, underscores the global community's need to work together to combat terrorist organisations that threaten the lives of innocent civilians all around the world," she said.

Alistair Burt, the foreign office minister for the Middle East, also condemned the atrocity. "In targeting a busy mosque, the bombers claimed the lives of peaceful worshippers and passers by," he said. "Our thoughts are with the families of those who have lost their lives so far, and the many more injured."
