UK envoy summoned over Miliband rhetoric

Speaking in Abu Dhabi on Monday, David Miliband called Iran's nuclear program "the most immediate threat" to the Middle East.

Iran has summoned the UK ambassador in Tehran to protest "aggressive" anti-Iran remarks made by Britain's foreign policy chief.

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband had claimed on Monday that Iran's nuclear program presents "the most immediate threat" to the Middle East and the rest of the world.

Miliband had made the remarks at a conference on nuclear energy in the United Arab Emirates, in an attempt to rally Arab support for international diplomacy with Iran over its nuclear program.

On Wednesday, Iran's Foreign Ministry summoned Jeffery Adams, the British envoy in Tehran, to express disappointment over the remarks.

Such "aggressive, provocative" remarks are directed at fueling tension between regional countries.

Iran, a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), says its nuclear program is aimed at making use of the civilian applications of the technology.

The West, meanwhile, accuses the country of having plans to develop a nuclear weapon.

The UN agency responsible for investigating Iran's nuclear activities confirmed in its latest report that it has "been able to continue to verify the non-diversion of declared nuclear material in Iran."

To ease the controversy surrounding the Iranian program, the UN body, however, says unless Tehran increases its nuclear cooperation, it "will not be able to provide credible assurance about the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran."
