Issues Facing the United Kingdom, the United States and the World
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton
Remarks With British Foreign Secretary David Miliband After Their Meeting
Washington, DC, 3 February 2009
Quote: | FOREIGN SECRETARY MILIBAND: […] At each stage, we have, I think, in our discussions today, followed what the President and the Prime Minister committed themselves to, which was to renew and refresh the special relationship, and that is certainly our commitment. […] We've talked also about the importance of the Iranian nuclear issue, your commitment to engage with other countries in making clear to Iran the costs of its current course, but also making clear to Iran that if it's willing to accept its responsibilities in the international community, it will be a welcome member of the international community exercising its rights as well as its responsibilities, I think is a very important message. […]
QUESTION: Madame Secretary, how important is it that European allies step up to (inaudible) on Iran?
SECRETARY CLINTON: Well, I think that the Foreign Secretary said it very well, that we view Iran as a challenge; and it is one that is not directed solely at the United States or even at our European allies, but indeed, the larger region and the world. We are going to be working within the Administration to devise our approach to Iran, and working closely with Her Majesty's government and the work that the Foreign Secretary and others have already done. […] It is clear that, as the Foreign Secretary said, Iran has an opportunity to step up and become a productive member of the international community. As President Obama said, we are reaching out a hand, but the fist has to unclench. |

by Elie Leshem, Jerusalem Post, 4 February 2009
Quote: | Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Wednesday cautioned that the satellite launched into orbit by Iran on Tuesday proved its military potential and was cause for concern for the international community.
"The Iranian satellite is a technological achievement for the Iranians and a first step that proves military and intelligence ability and potential," Barak said in a statement.
"This is yet another reason for the international community to tighten and increase sanctions against Iran."
Commenting on the Iranian nuclear drive Tuesday, Barak said that Israel "must arrive at a strategic understanding with the US over the essence of Iran's military nuclear program and ensure that even if at this time they opt for the diplomatic option […] talks will only last a short while before harsh and necessary sanctions are imposed."
A nuclear Iran would pose a threat not only to Israel, but to the entire world, Barak said at the Herzliya Conference. |

Quote: | "Hamas is not a terror organization that will stop if we deal it a few blows. It's a fanatic religious movement supported by a fanatic religious Iranian regime. So if we want to stop rockets from Gaza, there is no choice but to uproot the Iranian regime in Gaza […] Yesterday we got another reminder – Iran launched a satellite into space, it is upgrading its ballistic missiles, and is racing towards nuclear weapons. […] The Iranian missile and terror threat is the greatest threat facing the State of Israel." | [Likud Party leader Benjamin Netanyahu, Herzliya Conference, 3 February 2009]

excerpt from: 'Iranian launch threatens Europe'
by Yaakov Katz, Jerusalem Post, 4 February 2009
Quote: | Iran's launch of a satellite on Tuesday demonstrates a new and advanced capability that allows Teheran to fire ballistic missiles carrying nuclear warheads all the way to Western Europe, said Maj.-Gen. (res.) Isaac Ben-Israel, the former head of the Israel Space Agency.
"You need specific and added energy when firing a satellite that weighs between 30 and 50 kilograms into space," Ben-Israel, who is also a Kadima MK, told The Jerusalem Post. "If they succeeded, then the equivalent within the atmosphere is firing a ballistic missile with a nuclear warhead that weighs one ton all the way to Western Europe."
The Iranian satellite was not alarming in itself, he said.
"It's just a box. What is [cause for concern] is the Iranians' increasing ability to fire long-range ballistic missiles," Ben-Israel said. |

Challenge:
Find any mention of any country, other than Iran, that has launched a satellite about which the BBC has referred to as "homegrown".
Since when has a satellite made within a nation, been referred to as "homegrown".

Iran just years away from nuclear capability, UK says
Reuters, 5 February 2009
Quote: | "Our estimate is that Iran could develop a capability in years, not decades, and I think the next year is going to be critical," Foreign Office Minister Bill Rammell told the British parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee.
He spoke as world powers said after meeting in Germany that they were committed to a diplomatic solution to the dispute over Iran's nuclear programme and welcomed U.S. President Barack Obama's offer to talk directly to Tehran. |
