I saw on MSM about 4 years ago (maybe) Norway had gone ahead with this to archive all known crop varieties.

While the reasons stated for founding the seed bank may seem dubious due to some of those associated with it, it's probably not a bad idea as one means to conserving existing biological diversity. Better to do it now while it can be done, rather than wish we had after species extinction has occured.

Where I would query its intent is in its limited scope - northern Norway could easily disappear for several millennia come the next ice age.
So there would need to be several such banks established - the Andes and the Central African highlands nearer the Equator would seem better long-term candidates from a climate change point of view.

Mind you, having said that given the occasional pole flip or axis tilt, even they might not have completely guaranteed safety. But I suppose we'd have other things on our minds were that to happen.

One thing Microsoft founder Bill Gates can’t be accused of is sloth. He was already programming at 14, founded Microsoft at age 20 while still a student at Harvard. By 1995 he had been listed by Forbes as the world’s richest man from being the largest shareholder in his Microsoft, a company which his relentless drive built into a de facto monopoly in software systems for personal computers.

In 2006 when most people in such a situation might think of retiring to a quiet Pacific island, Bill Gates decided to devote his energies to his Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the world’s largest ‘transparent’ private foundation as it says, with a whopping $34.6 billion endowment and a legal necessity to spend $1.5 billion a year on charitable projects around the world to maintain its tax free charitable status. A gift from friend and business associate, mega-investor Warren Buffett in 2006, of some $30 billion worth of shares in Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway put the Gates’ foundation into the league where it spends almost the amount of the entire annual budget of the United Nations’ World Health Organization.

So when Bill Gates decides through the Gates Foundation to invest some $30 million of their hard earned money in a project, it is worth looking at.

No project is more interesting at the moment than a curious project in one of the world’s most remote spots, Svalbard. Bill Gates is investing millions in a seed bank on the Barents Sea near the Arctic Ocean, some 1,100 kilometers from the North Pole. Svalbard is a barren piece of rock claimed by Norway and ceded in 1925 by international treaty (see map)...........

Others being Cargyll (blatantly declaring they intend to monopolise global grain supplies); ADM (Archer Daniel Midland) have a similar policy.

This is looking more like genocide than some naturally occurring 'doomsday' scenario.

Why do so few people take notice of these maniacs interests? The author of the above linked article wrote 'Seeds of Destruction' (Chapter 1 here http://www.engdahl.oilgeopolitics.net/print/Iraq%20and%20seeds%20of%20 democracy.htm)
a couple of years ago yet there's been very little notice taken of it.

"[Bremer's Iraq] Order 81, states: ‘Farmers shall be prohibited from re-using seeds of protected varieties or any variety mentioned in items 1 and 2 of paragraph (C) of Article 14 of this Chapter.’

In plain English, this gives holders of patents on certain plant varieties, i.e. large foreign multinationals, absolute rights for 20 years over use of their seeds in Iraqi agriculture. The protected plant varieties are Genetically Modified or Gene Manipulated (GM) plants, and an Iraqi farmer who chose to plant such seeds must sign an agreement with the seed company holding the patent that he would pay a ‘technology fee’ and an annual license fee for planting the patented seeds."

Doomsday seed vault's stores are growing 16 Feb 2009 The stores of seeds in a "doomsday" vault in the Norwegian Arctic are growing as researchers rush to preserve 100,000 crop varieties from potential extinction. The imperiled seeds are going to be critical for protecting the global food supply against devastating crop losses as a result of climate change, said Cary Fowler, executive director of the Global Crop Diversity Trust.
