Photojournalist Steve Connors says that most western journo's working with him in iraq after the fall of baghdad' swallowed the party line that we are the good guys and those resisting us were foreign fighters.'
The right to resist invasion of your country is enshrined in the UN charter but, says Connors, 'when we go and invade someones country all of a sudden their right to resist is not legitimate in our eyes'
Connors realised that ordinary iraq's were resisting the occupation.
He and fellow journalist, Molly Bingham made a documentary in 2007 called 'Meeting Resistance'
The film was screened at the British Museum in London recently, whilst both BBC and Channel 4 refuse to show it. Is this because it shows some inconvenient truths?
You can now buy the film meeting resistance at: www.joiningthedocs.tv
Connors comments on the negative impact on security caused by the creation of the Awakening Movement supposedly a successful us counter insurgency operation: 'what they have done essentially is chosen elements from some tribes and promoted them over other elements..........they are creating the conditions for another civil war, this time among the sunni tribes.'
Connors comments on the iraqi death toll:'in iraq you can have someone killed and they are buried within two hours. there is no report of the death, most people dont go to the morgue.'
The Lancet estimates at least 655,000 iraqi deaths and never before have the Lancets figures been disputed, except with iraq. Connors says 'the reason we find it so difficult to accept is because we are the bad guys this time. we have caused all this pain and suffering'
'If we go back to the Nuremberg principles, to commit aggressive war is the supreme crime........Britain is as guilty as the US. We are on the wrong side of history.'
nb: it is now widely understood that the media on both sides of the atlantic failed to hold their governments to account in the run up to the Iraq war. As Arianna Huffington from www. huffington post.com says, 'the watchdogs acted more like lapdogs.'
Go to: www.meetingresistance.com for more info on the film.
Why not put a screening on in your area? invite Molly and Steve to give a talk?
