The Town Hall Stasi must be stripped of surveillance powers
.....In the past, the Mail has revealed how Poole Borough Council spied on a family wrongly suspected of cheating school catchment area rules for more than two weeks without their knowledge. They were, ultimately, found to be doing no wrong and have threatened to sue the council.
West Lindsey District council placed motion-activated cameras on lampposts and inside tin cans to find people putting out rubbish early. Milton Keynes council deployed officers to go through bin bags placed out at the wrong time - a mortal sin, in this day and age - to find documents that may give-away the culprits' address.
Rhondda District council in Wales used cameras to mount an operation on children 'dumping rubbish' - to make a bonfire.
Hambleton District Council in Yorkshire routinely uses covert video cameras to spy on potential dog fouling and justifies it because 'the dog warden is unable to be in attendance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week'.
In some cases, the councils' antics are so preposterous as to verge on the amusing. For example, Mendip District Council used covert officers to attend a bird market to check they were not unlawfully selling to the public. This, apparently, should only be done from a licensed pet shop......
