Thirteen police officers charged over wrongful murder convictions of Cardiff Three
By Charlotte Gill - 04th March 2009
Thirteen policemen who investigated the brutal stabbing of a prostitute 21 years ago have been accused of framing three innocent men for the murder.
The officers are among 15 people who have been charged over the original investigation into the death of Lynette White on Valentine's Day in 1988.
The 20-year-old was stabbed more than 50 times in a flat above a betting shop in the red light district of Cardiff.
Her boyfriend Stephen Miller and his friends Yusef Abdullahi and Tony Paris - known as the Cardiff Three - were jailed for the killing in 1990 but were released two years later after their convictions were quashed by the Court of Appeal.
A fresh inquiry and advances in DNA technology finally led police to the real killer, security guard Jeffrey Gafoor - who was one of Miss White's clients.
He pleaded guilty in 2003 and was jailed for life.
In December, three witnesses who gave false evidence at the original trial were jailed for 18 months after pleading guilty to perjury.
Miss White's neighbour Mark Grommek, and prostitutes Angela Psaila and Leanne Vilday, had all been pressured to lie in court at the 1990 trial by giving evidence against the innocent men.
As he sentenced them last year, the judge said they were 'seriously hounded, bullied, threatened, abused and manipulated by the police'.
The Crown Prosecution Service have announced that there is sufficient evidence to prosecute three serving officers and ten former officers involved in the original investigation.
They are all charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
The serving officers were named as PC John Murray, Detective Sergeant Paul Stephen and Detective Constable Paul Jennings.
They are joined by retired officers Graham Mouncher, Richard Powell, Thomas Page, Michael Daniels, John Gillard, Peter Greenwood, John Seaford, Rachel O'Brien and Stephen Hicks, plus Wayne Pugh, a former officer who now works as a police staff member.
Two witnesses in the original trial have also been charged with perjury.
All 15 will appear at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court in London on April 24.
Mr Paris and Mr Abdullahi said yesterday they had never regained the lives they had before they were allegedly 'fitted up'.
In a statement released by their lawyer, they added: 'Our lives have been utterly destroyed by being branded brutal murderers.'
Assistant Chief Constable Colette Paul of South Wales Police, who is overseeing the reinvestigation, said: 'At the forefront of our thoughts today is Lynette White.
'These developments will once again bring back painful memories for her family and friends and all who knew her.' _________________ www.lawyerscommitteefor9-11inquiry.org
