Bit more practice for the security forces following G20 protests. Sorry for the cynicism

Man shot dead by police

A man apparently holding his wife hostage has been shot dead by police in West Sussex.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating the incident which took place shortly before lunchtime in Fernhurst.

Sussex Police confirmed they attended an incident but a spokesman refused to comment further.

An IPCC spokeswoman said: 'The IPCC is to independently investigate the fatal shooting of a man in Fernhurst (near Midhurst) in West Sussex this afternoon.

'At approximately 3pm Sussex Police referred the incident to the IPCC. IPCC investigators have been deployed to the scene to start the inquiry.'

Neighbours say the man was a pensioner and was holding his wife hostage at gunpoint.

They said there were reports that the man, thought to be in his 60s, was depressed.

One eyewitness said officers used a loud hailer to encourage the man to leave the flat before the fatal shot was fired.

Another said she heard a policewoman shout, 'We have stunned him, get an ambulance,' during the confrontation.

A drinker at the Duke of Cumberland pub in the village said police had been called to a hostage situation.

The man, who declined to be named, said: 'I was told there was a hostage situation and it was an elderly man with an ill wife.

'Apparently he was armed and would not let anyone come near.'

Fernhurst, a village of some 3,000 residents, lies about three miles south of Haslemere close to the borders of Surrey and Hampshire.

This is a story that doesn't make sense? A gun-weilding pensioner who is apparently upset that is 'invalid' wife is to be taken into care? If so why threaten her with a gun? When you have a story that doesn't make sense, think hidden agenda and cove story.

There is more to this. What we cannot know. But I suspect that the whole hostage wife story is made up. More likely, he's a disgruntled special ops, MI6 agent who threatened to spill the beans.

I suppose if an unarmed civilian boarding a tube train can warrant 9 in the head then anyone with a gun (or in the case of one guy a table leg wrapped up) has got no chance
