Lennon wrote tribute to Bloody Sunday victims
A former M15 agent has said that former Beatle John Lennon helped fund the IRA in the early 1970s.
David Shayler told The Observer that he read the allegation in an M15 file.
He also told the paper that an MI5 source within the Workers' Revolutionary Party (WRP) - whose most famous member was actress Vanessa Redgrave - claimed Lennon donated tens of thousands of pounds to their cause too.

Yoko Ono has denied claims that her late husband John Lennon secretly helped fund the IRA in the 1970s.
The 67-year-old widow of the former Beatle, in the northern Spanish city of Zaragoza to open an exhibition, said there was no truth in the allegations reported in several Sunday newspapers.
She said: "My husband did not give money to the IRA. He gave money when there were people who asked for it, people who needed it.

"He thought this money was to be used for children, ophans or women who needed it."

If it were true you'd never hear "Give peace a chance" in quite the same way again. |

"It is a vivid example of the excesses of this culture of secrecy which seems to pervade on both sides of the Atlantic."
The US Government, and its unnamed correspondent, claimed national security was at stake.
But Prof Wiener told BBC News Online: "This is not 'national security' information. It consists of 30-year-old reports on the political activities of a dead rock star." |
"National security" - could Lennon have been assassinated by a Manchurian Candidate? |

I agree its an allegation and a claim, and its not outside the realm of possibility that Shayler saw a document at MI5 containing that allegation and claim
Nothing there that makes it true, so without more its just another one of those claims attached to public personalities
Meanwhile, what IS true is that in the early 70's period in question, Lennon was certainly subject to intense scrutiny from US intelligence services over his role as a focus for the anti-war movement, which included all sorts of deliberate buggering him about regarding his residence status in the US... these sorts of claims are the kind of thing that could be concocted and considered for use in support of that _________________ Free your Self and Free the World |
