Canadian Legislation to Allow Terror Victims to Sue

Israel National News, 1 June 2009

Victims of terrorism will be able to seek retribution against their attackers in Canadian courts under an amendment to the State Immunity Act to be introduced in Parliament this week. Prime Minister Stephen Harper told a Canadian Jewish Congress event Sunday in Toronto that the bill "will allow victims to sue perpetrators and sponsors of terrorist acts, including foreign states, in Canadian courts." Currently, the State Immunity Act prohibits anyone from taking sovereign states or individuals from abroad to court in Canada, except for business reasons.

The new legislation, based on previous private members' bills, will be unveiled by Public Safety Minister Peter Van Loan. If the new legislation is similar to the private member's bill, it would apply to acts outside Canada, but some Canadian connection would be needed – such as a Canadian victim or Canadian sponsor of terrorism abroad, according to one legal expert.

I offer this article as an experiment in net surveillance and would be interested in how readers find their net connections responding whilst the article is on one of their tabs...

...But yesterday, at the Beth Emeth Bais Yehuda synagogue in North York, the most astonishing thing happened. Leaders of Canada's political parties got all gushy and goopy, practically falling over one another to show they love Jews – and Israel – best.

Read the comments. Canadians understand that what happened in the United States is now happening in Canada.

The fact you said that last bit, means I'm reluctant to do so!
Sorry, I chickened out!

I don't blame you ;-) OTOH, one can feel fairly confident running through TOR http://www.torproject.org/ though one needs a fast connection to make it tolerable to use. Combine that with an article like the above and you may as well quit the keyboard and take to granite and chisel as being faster.

If you won't hit the link in my last post, don't ever find yourself on the www.giyus.org or adl.org sites! {8-/
