At dozens of hospitals around the United Kingdom, an investigation revealed that staff had been burning the bodies of thousands of aborted and miscarried fetuses in incinerators intended for clinical waste, and in some cases even burning the remains to heat the hospitals themselves.

The facts around the case are shocking, but apparently very real. According to an investigation by Dispatches, a British documentary program on Channel 4, ten different NHS trusts admitted to burning the remains of the unborn alongside medical trash. Even worse, two hospitals were found to be using the bodies in “waste-to-energy” plants which are used to generate power for heat at the facilities. The families were never told what laid in store for the remains, or were simply told that they were “cremated,” a decidedly more respectful description for what was truly happening.

It took less than a day after news began to emerge before the government responded with an unequivocal ban on incinerating fetal remains . Health Minister Dr. Dan Poulter condemned the practice.

“This practice is totally unacceptable,” said Dr Poulter.

“While the vast majority of hospitals are acting in the appropriate way, that must be the case for all hospitals and the Human Tissue Authority has now been asked to ensure that it acts on this issue without delay.” [source]

It’s unknown how long this has been going on or how many bodies have been burned. According to estimates, nearly 16,000 fetal remains were incinerated in the past two years alone at the 27 hospitals shown to be engaged in the practice.



While abortion is a contentious issue, the idea that aborted babies should not be burned for fuel is probably not a controversial one among either camp. There are ways to cremate a body without being disrespectful for the life it once was. Using those remains to heat a building, or even to be burned with garbage is repugnant. It’s an action that many will find repulsive in its stark utilitarianism, and as Noah Rothman writes in an article at Mediaite, is “a philosophy shared by virtually all of the 20th Century’s most egregious human rights violators.” Any way you look at it, it’s really bad.

Most medical professionals seemed to agree. The reaction on hearing the news was strong denials and a bit of finger pointing. While the hospitals that have engaged in the practice haven’t commented publicly, everyone from health ministers down came out to condemn it. Hospitals not guilty also piled on, releasing statements assuring the public that they were definitely not doing it. One such hospital, Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust, said:

“The Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust does not incinerate foetal remains… [it] takes great care over foetal remains.”

Undoubtedly, hospitals in the UK will have a long road ahead of them to earn the trust of the public again.
