OUR MISSION is to publicise the case of two young people whose lives are being wasted in prison for offences they did not, could not and would not have commited.

On 11 December 1996, Samar Alami, a Lebanese Palestinian woman, and Jawad Botmeh, a Palestinian man, were wrongfully convicted of conspiracy in relation to the bombings of the Israeli Embassy and Balfour House in London in 1994. Both have been sentenced to an extraordinary twenty years in prison, after which they face deportation.

Freedom and Justice for Samar & Jawad is determined to fight this miscarriage of justice by explaining why it is believed that Samar and Jawad are innocent of these charges, providing information about the case, and giving you an opportunity to help the efforts to free them.

The cover-up:

Revelations at the Court of Appeal confirm a shocking cover up: vital evidence implicating parties unrelated to Samar & Jawad was deliberately withheld from court by the intelligence services, police and the prosecution since 1994. While the official excuse for withholding one piece of evidence is "human error", no explanation has been given as to why these "errors" were not rectified for the last 6 years, or why the lead now uncovered by the defence was suppressed at all. The authorities continue to deny the defence the bulk of the evidence.

Details of the cover-up:

The "Shayler" evidence

In November 1997, British security services (MI5) agent David Shayler revealed to the media that MI5/MI6 had received a clear warning from a reliable source that the Israeli Embassy in London would be attacked in July 1994. This warning is crucial new evidence in the case. If it is as described, then the July 1994 bombings could not have been carried out by Samar and Jawad. Further, in August 1998, investigative journalist Paul Foot established from Mr Shayler that there was another hidden piece of information. This is a report written in September-October 1994 by a senior MI6 officer involved in the investigation, in which he concluded that Israeli intelligence could have been involved in the attacks.

Both pieces of evidence were withheld from court at the time of the trial. They completely contradict the main premise of the prosecution, namely that an "intelligence vacuum" surrounded the bombings, which were carried out by a few London-based Palestinians. They are in accordance with the fact that the highly professional and precise attacks must have been carried out by well-trained, experienced, group or international terrorist organisation. As a reminder, the trial judge accepted that neither Samar nor Jawad belonged to a terrorist organisation.

The defence has been asking for this and other evidence since 1997. Yet, it is only during the appeal in October 2000, that the first Shayler revelation was confirmed. After yet another PII hearing (a hearing that excludes the defence), the appeal judges gave the defence only one hand- written, short document, which goes further than Shayler's first revelation: MI5, MI6, police and the prosecution knew, prior to the bombings, that a terrorist organisation was planning the attacks. Without elaborating, the document says that subsequent "intelligence information" indicates that this terrorist organisation did not carry out the bombings, and claims incredibly that, as a result of no less than six counts of "human error" and "oversight", this information was not even disclosed to the trial judge. Thus far, the appeal judges are refusing to disclose anything else. As such, THE DISCLOSURE OF A PREVIOUSLY SUPPRESSED PIECE OF EVIDENCE IS MINIMAL AND INSUFFICIENT. The warning received by the Israeli embassy itself before the bombing and the second Shayler revelation are only two items of a long list of material that the defence has been denied for the last 6 years.

New lead

At the end of the appeal, the defence received a second piece of information indicating that, at the time of the bombings, police received information about a suspect also unrelated to Samar & Jawad. A freelance cameraman said he reported his flat-mate to police in July 1994, as he found that the latter had several documents, including a list of ammunition & arms and a map of the embassy and its defences. Two detectives took a statement and removed all the documents. NONE OF THIS EVIDENCE HAS NEVER BEEN DISCLOSED TO THE DEFENCE; THE POLICE AND PROSECUTION ARE STILL FAILING TO RESPOND TO DEMANDS FOR ITS DISCLOSURE.

Media reports have it that TATP was used.

The attacks in London in July of 2005 involved the first use of HPOM in the UK. The attacks of July 7 are still under investigation.

TATP is suicide bombers' weapon of choice

TATP is thought to have been used in used in various bomb attacks outside the Middle East, including on a Philippines Airlines flight to Japan in December 1994. It was also used as the trigger in two car bombs detonated in London in July 1994 outside the Israeli Embassy and a Jewish philanthropic institution. Two Palestinian students were later convicted of conspiracy over those bombings. [See www.freesaj.org.uk]

European Court rejects appeal from Israel Embassy bombers

JONNY PAUL, Jerusalem Post correspondent

European Court of Human Rights dismisses request from pair who left 22 wounded in London attacks.

An appeal by two Palestinians convicted of bombing the Israeli Embassy and Balfour House, a Jewish community center, in London in 1994 was dismissed by the European Court of Human Rights last week. In December 1996, Samar Alami and Jawad Botmeh were sentenced at the Old Bailey to 20 years in prison, to would be followed by immediate deportation, for conspiracy to make, place and detonate bombs at the embassy and Balfour House in July 1994. Fourteen people were wounded at the embassy and eight at Balfour House. It is believed that Alami and Botmeh were trying to sabotage the Middle East diplomatic process. They were alleged to be members of, or sympathizers with, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, but, being dissatisfied with the terrorist group's official policy, had become part of a breakaway British group. In 1997 David Shayler, a former MI5 officer, said that some months prior to the bombings, the security services received information that a terrorist organization unconnected to the two convicted bombers was seeking information about the location and defenses of the embassy for a possible bombing attack. He was prosecuted under the Official Secrets Act for giving secret information to a British newspaper. However the trial judge relied on related intelligence received after the bomb attack that the terrorist organization Shayler had not been responsible. An appeal by Alami and Botmeh to the Court of Appeal in November 2001 was dismissed. At the trial, Lord Justice Rose said: "Those who - whatever their motivation - place bombs in the heart of this city cannot expect their conduct to be treated by anything other than very substantial terms of imprisonment." In October 2004, Alami was transferred to Send Open Prison in Surrey, southeast England, and she is currently permitted weekend leaves.

The bombers were the first to use explosives in the UK made of triacetone triperoxide (TATP).

At their trial, the pair denied any involvement in the London bombings, but admitted to experimenting with TATP and model aircraft to develop techniques that could be used in the "occupied territories." Alami, a chemical engineer, admitted possessing other explosive devices and related literature. Botmeh, also an engineer, was alleged to have purchased the two cars that were used in the London attacks, and a large amount of TATP explosive of a different type to that used in the two bombs was found in a lock-up rented by him. The pair alleged that a Palestinian known to them as "Reeda," whom they were unable to further identify, had supplied the TATP found in the lock-up and accompanied Botmeh to buy cars at auction. TATP's base ingredients - drain cleaner, bleach and acetone - can be bought easily and without attracting suspicion, and its chemical composition is simple. It is almost undetectable by sniffer dogs or conventional bomb detection systems. TATP was used in the London 7/7 bombings that killed 52 people in 2005.

Middle-class woman 'planted embassy bomb'

Tuesday 08 October 1996

A Palestinian planted a car bomb at the Israeli embassy in London in an attempt to derail the Israeli-Arab peace initiative, a jury at the Old Bailey was told yesterday.

Nadia Zekra, 49, was a member of a group of middle-class Palestinians based in London, David Calvert-Smith, for the prosecution, said.

The group believed that Yasser Arafat, the Palestinian leader, "was misguided in his attempts to come to any accommodation with Israel and wished to hinder the process", Mr Calvert-Smith said.

The bomb was set off in July 1994 after the-then Israeli leader, Yitzhak Rabin, and King Hussein of Jordan had signed the Washington peace declaration.

It shattered the windows of "every house, shop and car within a radius of a few hundreds yards. People inside the buildings and outside on the street were thrown to the ground. Substantial debris flew as far as 300 yards or so". Damage to the embassy, in Kensington Palace Gardens, amounted to more than pounds 5m.

The bomb was in the back or boot of an Audi parked close to the embassy. Mr Calvert-Smith said that it was left there by Mrs Zekra, of West Kensington, west London. She denies causing an explosion.

The prosecution alleges that another woman and two men in the dock with her had taken part in the "planning and manufacture" of the bomb and of a second bomb which exploded the following day outside the offices of a Jewish charity.

Samar Alami, 30, of South Kensington, Jawad Botmeh, 28, of Bloomsbury, central London, and Mahmoud Abu-Wardeh, 25, of Putney, south-west London, deny conspiring to cause explosions between January 1993 and May 1995.

They also deny possessing an explosive substance, triacetone triperoxide, of a nature likely to endanger life or cause serious damage, and possession of firearms.

Mr Calvert-Smith said the embassy bomb was triggered either by a timing device "or more likely, by remote control". That day letters were posted addressed to two Arabic newspapers and the Palestine Liberation Organisation's offices in London, he alleged.

They were from the "Palestine Resistance Jaffa Group in Palestine" and claimed responsibility for the embassy bomb and one at premises in north London known as Balfour House. One exploded the following day at the building which belongs to the Jewish Philanthropic Organisation for Israel and the Middle East.

"Once again enormous damage was caused to surrounding buildings and a number of people were injured," Mr Calvert-Smith told the jury.

Of the accused, he said: "All are of Palestinian origin and are well integrated into English society and the middle and upper middle classes."

Mrs Zekra was allegedly seen by a diplomatic protection police officer parking the car near the embassy. She said she was delivering a present and was told to be back in five minutes. The car's details were checked by radio when she did not return but revealed nothing suspicious.

The case continues.

This article is not directly related to the false flag Israeli Embassy / Balfour House bombings in July 1994 but it is useful information vis Israeli agents running double agents to illustrate the method.

This NYT piece is about Thatcher's expulsion of Arie Regev, the Mossad Israeli attache, and Zaki al-Howa, the press officer at the P.L.O.'s London office, in June 1988 over the assassination of Ali Naji al-Adhami, the brilliant cartoonist, in July 1987 in London.

Compare the murder of a subversive cartoonist with the use of cartoons in Scandanvia to promote the global terrorism marketing plan, aka the so-called Jihad.

Hiding behind bombs and bullets when confronted by the pen.

Brave lot aren't they ....

Britain Orders Israeli Diplomat to Leave

By FRANCIS X. CLINES, Special to the New York Times

Published: June 18, 1988

Britain today ordered the expulsion of an Israeli diplomat after discovering that Mossad, the Israeli secret service, ran a double-agent intelligence operation here directed against Palestinian terrorists.

In a terse announcement that British officials conceded masked considerable anger, the Foreign Office ordered the expulsion of an embassy attache said to be closely involved with a Palestininan convicted here last week of storing a bomb and gun cache for the Palestine Liberation Organization.

The Palestinian, Ishmail Hassan Sowan, a 29-year-old Jerusalem-born engineer, testified that he was used by Mossad as a double agent to track Abdul Rahim Mustapha, a suspected member of a Palestinian assassination team said to have been active last summer in London.

British officials, embarrassed to learn of the Israeli double-agent operation only after the arms cache arrest, said they later verified the Mossad connection. They said they were particularly concerned because the British police have been seeking Mr. Mustapha in connection with the killing here last year of Ali Naji al-Adhami, a leading Arab cartoonist who was renowned for satirizing P.L.O. leaders.

Explosives Are Discovered

It was while they sought Mr. Mustapha's whereabouts that they first questioned his associates and discovered six suitcases of arms and explosives casually left in an apartment in the Yorkshire town of Hull by Mr. Sowan, who then told the story of P.L.O. activities and his double-agent status.

In retaliation, the Foreign Office announced the expulsion of both Arie Regev, the Israeli attache, and Zaki al-Howa, the press officer at the P.L.O.'s London office. The brief announcement noted the arms cache trial and cited Mr. Regev for ''activities incompatible with his diplomatic status,'' but did not otherwise explain.

A British official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the two men, who were ordered to leave by the end of June, were found to have been separately involved with Mr. Sowan. Mr. Regev was said to have helped direct Mr. Sowan's activities in posing as an agent in the P.L.O. terrorist operation in London, and Mr. Howa reportedly helped run the operation from the organization's headquarters.

In Jerusalem, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said: ''We regret that Her Majesty's Government has seen fit to take measures of this kind. Israel did not act against any British interest.''

The Israeli expulsion order was unusual since Britain and Israel have had relatively friendly relations in recent years. British officials speaking privately emphasized, however, that the accepted standards of behavior in intelligence operations were that a friendly nation keeps a host nation informed of such a special operation and that it stays within the host nation's laws and general interests.

Ambassador Is Summoned

They said Israeli officials had to be well aware that the British police were seeking Mr. Mustapha and would be greatly concerned at the sizable P.L.O. cache being secreted in England by Mr. Sowan with the presumed knowledge of Mossad agents.

The Israeli Ambassador, Yehuda Avner, was summoned to discuss the case with the British Permanent Under Secretary, Sir Patrick Wright, diplomats said.

Mr. Sowan, who testified he was coerced by Israeli agents through concern for relatives living in Israel, was sentenced Thursday in Old Bailey to 11 years in prison on the arms cache charge.

Mr. Mustapha, who British officials suspect has fled to Tunisia, is identified by British intelligence sources as a leading member of Force 17, a P.L.O. paramilitary team whose responsibilities include protecting Yasir Arafat, the chairman of the organization. The British officials identify Mr. Mustapha as a suspect as well in a string of shootings and bombings dating back to 1970 in such scattered places as Jordan, Spain and West Germany, including the murder of three Israelis in a yacht at Larnaca, Cyprus, in 1986.

'A Fox, a Very Intelligent Man'

Police officials said Mr. Mustapha had run a garage in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, kept an apartment in London and fled Britain on July 22, a day after Mr. Adhami, the cartoonist, was shot on a London street. Mr. Sowan contended at his trial that Mr. Mustapha was ''a fox, a very intelligent man'' who rarely confided in him. He said they met in Beirut as students in the early 1980's.

The expulsion order was Downing Street's strongest reaction to charges of cloak-and-dagger abuses of diplomatic immunity since Syria was ordered to shut its embassy in 1986. Syria was accused of involvement with a terrorist convicted of trying to plant a bomb aboard an Israeli passenger jetliner taking off from London.

Britain has been a battleground for the Israeli-Arab dispute before. It was the shooting of the Israel Ambassador, Shlomo Argov, in June 1982 that served as the pretext for the Israeli invasion of Lebanon a few days later.

The Government prosecutor said at the trial that the P.L.O. arms supply kept by Mr. Sowan was enough to ''mount a sustained campaign of terrorism,'' with rapid-fire rifles, hand grenades, and a large amount of plastic explosive. In sentencing Mr. Sowan, the judge took note of Britain's modern experience with frequent terrorist bombings in civilian areas and declared, ''Deterrents and punishments are essential.''

According to British news reports, a second Palestinian also worked here for Israeli intelligence and was deported earlier this year.
