A feminist punk band who staged an unsanctioned performance in Moscow's principal cathedral were doing the work of the devil, according to the head of the Russian Orthodox church.
Patriarch Kirill said that "the devil laughed at us" when Pussy Riot performed their song Virgin Mary, Mother of God, Expel Putin! in the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour less than a fortnight before presidential elections.
Three alleged members of P*ssy Riot, who wear colourful balaclavas to hide their identities, have been arrested since the "punk prayer." They remain in prison awaiting trial on hooliganism charges and deny taking part in the 21 February show. All face sentences of up to seven years.
Patriarch Kirill appeared annoyed by calls for leniency. There were people who sought to "justify and downplay this sacrilege", he said. "My heart breaks from bitterness that amongst these people there are those who call themselves Orthodox."
Some members of the Orthodox church initiated an open letter to the patriarch earlier this month, calling on him to "maintain a Christian attitude" and for all criminal charges against the accused to be dropped.
Two of the three imprisoned women, Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, have young children and were arrested the day before Vladimir Putin won a third term as president in a vote marred by fraud allegations.
While he avoided mentioning P*ssy Riot by name, Patriarch Kiril said the group's members "believe in the strength of propaganda, in the strength of lies and slander, in the strength of the internet, in the strength of the media [and] in the strength of money and arms".
Other songs played publicly by the band, which is closely linked to Russia's opposition movement, have included "Putin Pissed Himself", "Death to Prison, Freedom to Protest", and "* the Sexist, * Putin's Henchman."
Vladimir Putin's press secretary has said that the president-in-waiting reacted "negatively" when told about Pussy Riot's cathedral performance. _________________ www.lawyerscommitteefor9-11inquiry.org www.rethink911.org www.patriotsquestion911.com www.actorsandartistsfor911truth.org www.mediafor911truth.org www.pilotsfor911truth.org www.mp911truth.org www.ae911truth.org www.rl911truth.org www.stj911.org www.v911t.org www.thisweek.org.uk www.abolishwar.org.uk www.elementary.org.uk www.radio4all.net/index.php/contributor/2149 http://utangente.free.fr/2003/media2003.pdf

Balloon riot, arrests as blaspheming band Pussy Riot in dock (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Around a hundred protesters and even more police have gathered at a Moscow court that is hearing the case of feminist punk band Pussy Riot, notorious for performing a blasphemous song in a cathedral. Some 20 demonstrators have been detained.
Three members of the group were charged with hooliganism after bursting into Moscow’s main Christ the Savior Cathedral in February. At the altar, the band yelled out the song “Holy s**t”, which criticized the Church and government. Two other members, who also took part, have not been detained.
The unauthorized demo held by Pussy Riot supporters outside the court turned into an improvised performance as protesters arrived in costumes with balloons and musical instruments, and prepared to sing and recite poetry.
The keenest Pussy Riot supporters tried to repeat the famed notorious look of the punk band members. Some cut holes in colorful hats, turning them into masks; others wore similar vivid dresses with bright tights. Several enthusiastic activists even threw flares at police, and were promptly detained.
Representatives of the Orthodox believers’ community also turned out to condemn the band’s actions and demand punishment. Kommersant FM says after some of the protesters were arrested, the rest moved to a nearby park to continue what they called their "court festival".
Thursday’s hearing will determine whether the young women will remain in detention, as investigators request more time to work on the case. Earlier, the court sanctioned the detention of the three members until April 24.
The case has split public opinion in Russia, as some demand the girls face the gravest possible sentence for blaspheming against the Orthodox Church and offending believers’ feelings, while others call the band members “prisoners of conscience” and demand their immediate release.
Amnesty International, the Helsinki group and other human rights organizations have spoken out in support of the band, saying the accusation of criminal offense was “too serious, and the reaction of the authorities unduly harsh.” According to the latest opinion poll, almost a half of Russians consider the event hooliganism, and 21 per cent say it was blasphemous.
Maria Alekhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Irina Loktina face up to seven years in prison if found guilty.

FUNNY! Haven't seen this on the BBC!
Well quite clearly the jury were right and this was primarily an attack on the Orthodox Church and not Vladimir Putin
No wonder Pussy Riot the headline grabber have distanced themselves from it.
Pussy Riot topless protest: FEMEN activist takes chainsaw to cross
A worship cross, dedicated to the memory of victims of political repressions in Arkhangelsk, cut down by unidentified vandals. (RIA Novosti / RIA Novosti)
An MP of the ruling United Russia party labels the recent incidents of several Orthodox crosses being cut down in Russia as “true Satanism”. He says it is a direct consequence of the scandal over the “punk prayer” by now jailed band Pussy Riot.
“This is true Satanism! When some obsessed scum are destroying the symbols of Orthodox Christianity and even the most outspoken liberals cannot talk of “civil position” or “free arts” here. This is direct instigation of religious hatred,” Aleksey Zhuravlev said.
Zhuravlev is a member of the Lower House Defense Committee and chairman of the Congress of Russian Communities – an organization protecting the rights of ethnic Russians abroad.
“It is necessary to find this Satanist scum and give them a show trial under the Article 282. A show trial! This should become a lesson to the rest,” the parliamentarian holds. The article of the Russian Criminal Code lists instigation of hatred as a crime and orders punishment of up to five years in prison.
The politician added that in his view the members of Pussy Riot got a very lenient sentence for their “punk prayer”.
“My comrades and I from the Congress of Russian Communities insisted that the suspects should be tried under Article 282, as they openly insulted the dignity of millions of Orthodox Christians,” he said.
“The situation is very serious, we need resolute measures to counter this army of darkness that is hiding behind the mask of opposition and liberalism until their time comes,” Zhuravlev concluded.
Deputy head of the opposition Liberal Democratic Party Yaroslav Nilov told the press that those who insult Christianity will be punished by fate and society only needs to show that this is inevitable.
“The incidents of desecration of religious symbols and temples have become frequent in recent times. The incidents with felling of crosses are of the most dangerous kind. This outspoken behavior is often presented by mass media as a funny flash mob and the aggrieved party is painted in uninteresting colors and this only adds to the aggression, the social conflict and to the number of provocations,” Nilov stated in a press release.
The MP urged journalists to treat the situation seriously and to inform the public about the sad fate of those who committed acts of religious vandalism.
“When the media report about vandalism they should also give examples from our history about the fate of those who dropped church bells, felled crosses and demolished churches. A lot of those who committed acts of sacrilege often got retribution really fast – accidents happened to them, some of them died suddenly and some lost their relatives,” the letter reads.
“Vivid reporters’ stories with such historical parallels would cool some hot heads and bring down the number of provocations,” the politician wrote.
The reaction came as unidentified people chopped down and cut into pieces three Orthodox crosses near the village of Smelovsky in the Chelyabinsk Region in the Urals, and one cross in North Russia’s Arkhangelsk Region. Police have started a search for the vandals, but so far have not achieved any results.
At the same time, the leader of the local Cossack community said that the Cossacks will do their best to find the hooligans and hand them over to law enforcers. He also said that the crosses will be restored and guard posts will be put near the holy symbols.
The latest “rights group” to jump on Russia’s President Putin about Pussy Riot is RootsAction. Following the propaganda line that Washington has established, RootsAction’s appeal for money and petition signers states that the three Russian women were sentenced to two years in prison “for the ‘crime’ of performing a song against Russia’s president Vladimir Putin in a Moscow church.”
This statement is a propagandistic misrepresentation of the offense for which the women were tried and convicted.
I have expressed my sympathies for the convicted women, and as a member of Amnesty International and the American Civil Liberties Union, I support human rights.
But I do not support the use of human rights organizations in behalf of Washington’s propaganda.
If Putin or some other official has the power to commute the sentences, I hope he uses it. But I do not think that the concerted Western propaganda campaign against Putin encourages that result. Twice as many Russians support the sentence than oppose it.
If the sentence is commuted in response to the Western propaganda campaign against Putin, Russian nationalists will depict Putin as a weak leader unable to stand up to Western intimidation. The more internal dissension there is in Russia, the easier for Washington to marginalize the country and kick it out of Washington’s path to the overthrow of Syria and Iran by brutal human-rights-violating violence, such as Washington has applied to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya.
The State Department, the EU, and human rights groups are sufficiently politically astute to be aware of this fact. Yet, the propaganda continues.
As Putin has said, “we know what Comrade Wolf is up to.” But what about the human rights organizations? What are they up to? Have they been incorporated into Washington’s propaganda machine, like the Western media, or are they latching on to Pussy Riot as a visibility and fundraising issue for themselves?
Do-good organizations hurt for money, because compassion for others is not in abundant supply. Pussy Riot is a fundraising opportunity. If the Russian government succumbs to the propaganda, it provides an opportunity for human rights organizations to tout their influence. In other words, human rights organizations have independent reasons to align with Washington’s propaganda. Their alignment does not necessarily mean that they are conscious tools of Washington.
You can bet your last dollar that Washington, which dismisses as “collateral damage” the hundreds of thousands of women, children, and village elders murdered in Washington’s wars against Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, Pakistan, and Syria, is not concerned with the three Pussy Riot women’s 2-year prison sentence.
Washington has kept the American hero, Bradley Manning in prison for two years without a trial. Washington claims the power, strictly prohibited by the US Constitution, that “scrap of paper,” to hold US citizens indefinitely in prison without due process of law and to murder them on suspicion alone without due process of law. Does any sentient person really believe that such a government gives a hoot about a two-year prison sentence for three Russian women?
The Western media is silent about the collapse of the United States into tyranny. But, on cue from Washington, the Western media is loud about the dire plight of Pussy Riot.
For example, this from the UK’s The Week with First Post: “Beyond Pussy Riot: slow death of freedom in Putin’s Russia.” Louisa Loveluck introduces her report: “The Russian government’s distaste for freedom of expression has been in the headlines recently thanks to the trial and subsequent imprisonment of three members of punk collective Pussy Riot. But the persecution of these women forms only a small part of a much broader crackdown on civil liberties in President Vladimir Putin’s Russia.”
Has Putin, like the Amerikan presidents Bush and Obama, declared that he has the power to throw Russian citizens in a dungeon for life without ever presenting evidence in a court? No, he has not.
Has Putin, like the Amerikan president Obama, declared that he has the power to assassinate Russian citizens without due process of law? No, he has not.
Has Putin, like the Amerikan president Obama, declared that he has the legal authority to invade any country of which he disapproves and to overthrow its government? No, he has not.
So why is the UK’s Louisa Loveluck going on about a two-year prison sentence in Russia when the UK government, in defiance of international law and in obedience to its Amerikan master, refuses safe passage to Ecuador for Julian Assange, who has been granted political asylum? Even “authoritarian” China grants safe passage to those granted asylum.
The hypocrisy of the West, including the rank hypocrisy of human rights organizations, is nauseating. It makes one ashamed.
Julian Assange faces life imprisonment in the Ecuadoran Embassy in London because the puppet UK government is helping Washington make an example of what happens to journalists who dare to publish the truth about Washington’s mendacity and war crimes.
Is Washington paying Louisa Loveluck’s salary or is she, along with the First Post, simply terrified of Washington’s power? Or are Ms. Loveluck and the First Post simply going with the flow and avoiding criticism by not differing from the propaganda line?
No one will investigate, so we will never know.
Meanwhile in “freedom and democracy” america, at their Tampa, Florida, nominating convention, the Republican Party showed its true colors. It is a Brownshirt Party.
The tyrannical Republican machine refused to allow Ron Paul’s name to be mentioned or his delegate count to be presented.
Reports from the Republican nomination convention read like reports of Stalin’s takeover of the Communist Party or the Nazi takeover of the German state. Rules adopted at the convention eliminate any grass roots input. The Republican politburo is supreme. The party is subservient, and the members’ voices are eliminated. Mimicking Lenin, the Republicans declared that Republican rule “means neither more nor less than unlimited power, resting directly on force, not limited by anything, not restricted by any laws, nor any absolute rules. Nothing else but that.”
The Republicans are the party of “freedom and democracy.” The Republicans are the party most controlled by the neoconservatives, who are strongly allied with Israel’s far right-wing government and are most hostile to the US Constitution. The Republicans are the party that gave us the PATRIOT Act, the first massive assault on the US Constitution. The Republicans are the party that gave us 9/11. The Republicans are the party that gave us the $3 trillion war against Iraq based on the Republican party’s lies about “weapons of mass destruction.” The Republicans are the party that gave us the $3 trillion war in Afghanistan based on lies about Osama bin Laden and the Taliban. The Republicans are the party that gave us the supremacy of the President over both the US Constitution and US statutory law; the executive branch is bound by neither according to the Republican Federalist Society members of the US Department of Justice (sic).

‘Pussy Riot’, the CIA and Cultural Terrorism
Last Friday the notorious ‘punk-group’ Pussy Riot was sentenced to two years in prison by the criminal court in Moscow. For the last weeks the destiny of three mediocre Russian clown-girls has been in focus of public attention worldwide. Galaxies of world celebrities and officials from McCartney to German Bundestag have wasted their time writing letters demanding their release. Dozens of head-masked hot tits were shown in public places to support their Russian pairs. Most likely the hysterics around Pussy Riot will be fed for some more time. Meanwhile the sober analysis of this scandal is obviously pending.
We’ll remind the chronology of the story for those who luckily didn’t follow it from the beginning. Last February a group of young girls and their supporters entered the majestic Christ the Savior Cathedral in the very heart of Moscow. They came closer to the ambon, quickly put up fancy cloaks and balaclavas and started shaking legs and shouting obscene and blasphemous verses. In formal language they were intentionally offending the worshippers. The performance lasted for less than a minute while rioters’ support group was filming the action on mobile phones and their security crew was busy repelling the attempts of churchmen to stop them. Later that day a mounted video-clip of the ‘performance’ with an overlapped music track appeared on YouTube.
It is still arguable whether the decision to prosecute the blasphemers was right. They have lost freedom – but for a while gained a worldwide ‘fame’. No doubt it was not a single spontaneous act by a group of dissolute individuals but an episode of a much wider global campaign to shake and eventually ruin traditional societies and institutions. It is being carried out by the same powerful circles which have inspired e.g. offensive caricatures of Prophet Muhammad in a Danish newspaper in 2005. The international brain-washing media machine has turned a paltry incident in Moscow into a scandal of the global scale. These three sluts, previously known in Russia exclusively for a sickening act of group sex they have performed in public with their partners in Zoological Museum of Moscow back in 2008 (those not too fastidious can see a photo of that orgy here), were chosen as a symbol of ‘civil protest’ and ‘abuse of power’ in Russia! For the Russians that is a ridiculous and even crazy endeavor. However for the cosmopolitan post-modernists busy shaping future global societies it is apparently not.
It is an open secret that avant-gardism became popular in the West in 1950-1960s thanks to unprecedented support from the CIA and was used by the United States as a powerful ideological weapon. Donald Jameson, a former CIA case officer, confessed to The Independent in 1995:
“Regarding Abstract Expressionism, I’d love to be able to say that the CIA invented it just to see what happens in New York and downtown SoHo tomorrow! It was recognised that Abstract Expressionism was the kind of art that made Socialist Realism look even more stylised and more rigid and confined than it was. And that relationship was exploited in some of the exhibitions.”
Nelson Rockefeller (1908-1979), who used to serve as the Special Assistant to the US President for Psychological Warfare and director of New York Museum of Modern Art in 1950s, clearly understood that modern art is not just business but a powerful tool forming human conscience in due (projected) direction. By the way, the Board of Trustees of the museum included high-ranked CIA officers William Paley (a close friend of Allen Dulles) and Henry Luce (creator of Time/Life Media Empire).
No wonder that such a respectful patronage of the Modern Art (naturally together with huge sponsor injections) have soon brought some smelly fruits. In 1961 a scandalous Italian sculptor Pietro Manzoni shocked the public by a new masterpiece, called “The Artist’s *”. He explained the idea the following way: “If a collector wants to get something where the artist has put himself entirely, let him get his * which is 100% personal”. So he did sealing his excrements in the cans labeled ‘Merda d’Artista’ in Italian, English, German and French languages. He had managed to produce 90 autographed cans before a myocardial infarction buried him two years later. The devastating reality is that he used to sell these 30-gram cans for the same measure of gold. In 2000 the famous London Tate Gallery bought the can #4 for 22300 pounds, and in 2007 another masterpiece was sold at Sotheby’s for 124000 Euros! Indeed, contemporary art is not quite an Art, but a symbol of political ideology embodied in certain artifacts. Its value is proportional to the rating of the ideology being propagated. Since 1950s the global cultural degradation has been one of the most lavishly paid projects in the West. These seeds have been grown even in Russia as the excremental Pussy Riot shows. The outrageous public reaction on the ‘Western modern art’ which suddenly spewed from the radical underground to the Cathedral’s ambon was natural and understandable. The consequent response of the authorities to such challenges should be smarter next time.
To illustrate the Russian public reaction on pussy-provocation we are posting a fragment of the open letter to Sir Paul McCartney written by a Russian priest. (He replied to the recent touching message of the British star in support of the ‘rioters’).
“Dear Sir Paul,
Some months ago Russia witnessed an act of evil. We, Russian believers, perceive this event in this way. In the church, built in honor of freeing Russia from Napoleon’s invasion, in the church which for us is the greatest national shrine, four young girls began to dance right before the altar swearing, singing sacrilegious songs and offences to Patriarch, who is for all of us the spiritual leader and honorable man. All this Bacchanalia was filmed and blown the world. Needless to say what a shock and spit in the soul we, Russian orthodox religious people, had experienced.
Several weeks before this event Pussy Riot tried to do something similar in another Moscow church. They were politely asked out without giving this public utterance. They conducted a similar action in the Red Square, just exactly where you, dear Sir Paul, gave your concert. And again, sacrilege and twisting were left without any consequences. At last, before the “action” in the Church of Christ the Savior members of Pussy Riot cropped up and performed an act of group sex with their partners in the State Zoo Museum in the broad daylight and in the presence of visitors including children. Video and photos of this effrontery were also made public in Internet and shown over the central Russian TV channels.
Sir Paul, I would like to ask you whether you consider these actions normal? What could happen in future if these so called punk rock performers who in reality have nothing to do either with punk movement or with rock music were not stopped? Of course, times are changing and in the “civilized world” this is probably considered normal, but I cannot imagine that musicians of Beatles group even with their nonconformity would allow something alike in the presence of children in a museum. There exist some norms of moral, decency, ethic, good and evil, not necessarily connected with this or that religion, which nobody can neglect. Because if the people overstep this limits, the will lose the character of Homo Sapiens and become the animal.
Dear Sir Paul, I am sure that you and other famous musicians were misled as to the essence of this latter event and came out for Pussy Riot without knowing these details. That is why I ventured to let you know the position of Russian believers. In your letter addressed to Pussy Riot you struggle for the freedom of art and self-expression. Nobody is against. Everything – freedom, art and self-expression – are elementary rights which God gave every man. As Lord Jesus Christ is teaching us, You shall know the Truth, ant the Truth shall make you free (The Gospel According to John, ch. 8, para. 32). Christianity is the religion of lovers of liberty and free-thinking people.
And in the present Russia our desire to be free is multiplied by that life experience in totalitarian communist state which we, Russians, had. Sir Paul, please note that the Russian Orthodox Church did not call upon to punish Pussy Riot: judicial proceedings took place upon the court petition of private persons who had been deeply offended by their act. And I understand those people. When Pussy Riot blasphemes in the street, it is their private affair. Many people do the same. But if they break into our church disturbing praying people, blaming our God, out faith, our Patriarch, they offend personally each of us.
Please tell me, Sir Paul, what would be your reaction if during your concert somebody run onto the scene and began to break your instruments, hindering your performance and then took your microphone and in dirty words offend everything that is dear and sacred for you, i.e. your wife, your parents, your art, your moral values? Would you call it self-expression and freedom of art or consider it as usual disorderly conduct? And what would you do in such a situation? I think that as a man possessing chivalry you would not wait for the guard but take actions against such a person yourself.
Probably the sentence for Pussy Riot is somewhat severe. But it was passed by the judiciary bodies. Wishing these young women good, please understand also us, orthodox believers. To nobody we wish ill, prison, long time in prisons, but at the same time we wish that our shrines for which not in so far past out fathers and grandfathers spilled blood, were subjected such an affront. It was not us who pitched the members of Pussy Riot group but it were they who plunged into our church and insulted deeply the present people and thousands of Internet users, which saw the movie with this sacrilege. They mocked before the God’s altar. And we wish not long terms in prison for these ill-educated and disorderly women but only that something similar will never take place in any of our churches.
With all due respect,
Hegumen Sergy (Ribko),
Rector of Moscow Church of Holy Spirit, in the 1970s – drummer of a rock-group and member of hippies movement.”
Actually we can understand the motives of Sir Paul and other international pop-stars who have expressed support to these clown-girls. First of all they were just ill-informed. Otherwise we can’t explain how Anthony Kiedis from the Red Hot Chili Peppers could agree pulling on a T-shirt for unknown porno-‘punks’ none of whom can play, sing or dance and there is no hope they would have ever acquire such abilities. If he had listened to their ‘music’, he would have demanded a capital penalty. He and others were just told that ‘Putin suppresses a feminist group and they need help’ and they did what they could. Who’s told that? Some smiley guys always hanging around musical business. Any producer getting well with his head knows that he should listen to these guys if he doesn’t want to have problems with his wards – chronically cocainized, drunkenly crushing cars and hotel suits and having sex with minors.
Are they aware of the fact they are loosing popularity in Russia by supporting a marginal porno-‘punk’ group? Probably not. But would such an awareness downgrade the well-paid international media campaign? Unlikely. We are afraid the price of the *-cans would be just several times higher. The puppeteers of Modern Art and Cultural Terrorism keep carrying out their mission.

Pussy Riot is described in the western media as a punk rock group, but seems in fact to be a group known as Voina (War) that performs lewd or scandalous unannounced public performances such as the one in the Russian cathedral, a sexual orgy in a museum, and events such as this and this.
