Its from 1983 but surley the rulling stands...
Quote: | The longest and most expensive case in Scottish legal history ended today with a ruling that fluoridation of the water supply was illegal. The suit was brought by a 69-yearold woman with no teeth.
The woman, Catherine McColl, sued on the ground that she had no teeth and did not want to be exposed to a ''horrible poison.'' The court battle lasted more than three years, cost the state about $1.5 million and produced more than five million words of evidence bound in 143 volumes.
Judge Lord Jauncey found that fluoridated water reduced tooth decay and did not have adverse health effects. But he said it was beyond the power of the local authorities to add fluoride to water. He said the authorities did not have the power to treat water for general health improvement purposes. He also said fluoridation brought no benefit to the toothless.
The Scottish decision is not binding on England and Wales, where 8 percent of the population drink fluoridated water. |
