Gerry Adams's family allegations timeline

Revelations by Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams that his late father subjected family members to emotional, physical and sexual abuse over many years have caused widespread shock.

The 61-year-old said on Sunday the family made the discovery about Gerry Snr in the 1990s. He went public about the abuse after it emerged last week that police wanted Mr Adams's brother Liam to answer allegations of sexual abuse against his daughter.

1978 - 1983: Liam Adams is alleged to have abused his daughter Aine during this time.

1987: Aine tells her mother Sally she was abused by her father and they report it to the police. By that stage, Sally and Liam Adams had broken up. That same year, Gerry Adams finds out about the allegations levelled against his brother. He now says he brought Aine, then aged 14, to confront her father. He admitted on Monday that this "could have been handled better".

1996: Gerry Adams publishes his autobiography. The Sunday Tribune reports he made 11 references to his brother Liam without mentioning any estrangement or hint of wrongdoing. Mr Adams has said that although they were estranged, they nonetheless met on several occasions.

1997: Liam Adams is active in Sinn Fein in Dundalk. The Sunday Tribune has claimed he intended to seek the nomination to be a Sinn Fein candidate in the area in the 1997 Irish general election but was defeated by a local hardliner. However, Gerry Adams has said this was not the case. He told RTE's Pat Kenny on Monday that his brother was never put forward as a candidate, adding: "I moved very quickly to get him dumped out of Sinn Fein." Liam Adams also worked on youth projects around this time in Dundalk, the paper reported.

1998-2003: Liam Adams works part-time as a youth worker in Clonard Youth Centre in west Belfast, having passed a full police check. The Clonard Youth Centre said there were no concerns arising from his time there. Gerry Adams says he told the authorities at Clonard about the sex abuse allegations made by Aine as soon as he became aware that Liam was working at the youth centre. It is understood that they have no record of Mr Adams giving them this information.

1998: Gerry Adams discovers his father Gerry Snr, subjected family members to emotional, physical and sexual abuse over many years.

October 2003 - November 2004: Liam Adams works at Cox's Demesne Youth and Community Project in Dundalk. He is employed as a youth worker on a project funded by European money to promote peace and reconciliation. He worked with young men aged between 16 and 22 involved in gang warfare in the County Louth town. The project now says it had never heard of any allegations against Liam Adams, adding: "Had we had this information naturally he would never have been employed in any capacity in youth work."

November 2004 - May 2006: Liam Adams worked as a youth development officer at the Beechmount Community Project in west Belfast. It has said that his name and details were submitted to the "relevant authorities, who signed off on his suitability to work with children."

A spokesperson added that it believed social services and the police have "serious questions" to answer about the checks carried out on Liam Adams.

"We have never received any complaint from any child, young person or their parent, or staff member, with respect to Liam Adams and his period of employment here within our project. Nevertheless, we feel that serious lapses by both the social services and the police have inexcusably put children and young people within our project at risk."

18 December 2009: Gerry Adams says Liam should hand himself over to the authorities to answer allegations of sexual abuse. It is understood that an arrest warrant was issued a year ago for failing to appear at a preliminary court hearing to answer questions about alleged sexual offences against his daughter.

Later that day, Aine Tyrell, now aged 36, tells UTV's Insight programme she decided to go public because she feels let down by police, social services, the Catholic Church and her uncle Gerry.

20 December 2009: Gerry Adams goes public over his father's abuse. He issues a statement to the media and tells RTE that his father, who died six years ago, was in denial for many years about his actions and he "had died a lonely old man".

21 December 2009: Liam Adams turns himself in at a County Sligo police station. Mr Adams leaves the station after giving police his name and address and saying that he is willing to be questioned. It is understood detectives could not detain him because they did not have the necessary European arrest warrant. The news emerges a day later.

14 January 2010: Ian Paisley Junior asks an Assembly committee to investigate if Gerry Adams breached its rules by failing to act about his brother's alleged sex abuse. The DUP assembly member said he had submitted "very detailed questions" to Assembly Ombudsman Tom Frawley. Mr Frawley will assess if the complaint merits being passed to the Assembly's Committee on Standards and Privileges. In a statement Gerry Adams said: "If the Assembly Ombudsman wants to speak to me on this issue I will of course co-operate fully. I have nothing to hide."

15 January 2010: The party confirms Liam Adams was still involved in Sinn Fein party work more than three years after the Sinn Fein leader had expelled him. Liam Adams was said to have left the party in 1997. However, Sinn Fein said he held a number of positions in west Belfast after 2000. Gerry Adams said that had he known about the move he would have acted to have his brother leave the party for a second time. The Sinn Fein president, who has been under pressure to explain Liam Adam's role in the party since the allegations arose, insisted that there had been "no cover up" by either him or Sinn Fein.

3 March 2010: A European arrest warrant is issued for Liam Adams. The warrant, issued by the Serious Organised Crime Agency, is endorsed by the High Court in Dublin. Police in Northern Ireland are seeking his extradition.

4 March 2010: Liam Adams hands himself in to police in Dublin.

Gerry Adams' brother Liam released on 15,000 euros bail

A brother of Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams has been released on bail of 15,000 euros after handing himself in to police in the Irish Republic.

Liam Adams is wanted by police in Northern Ireland over claims he sexually abused his now grown-up daughter from the age of four.

Mr Adams told the bail hearing at Dublin's High Court "the media have treated my family disgracefully".

"I would love to go home, but not under their circumstances."

His alleged victim, Aine Tyrell, waived her right to anonymity late last year to allege that her father had molested her, claiming that the abuse included rape.

Half of Mr Adams' bail money was provided by a lifelong friend, while the other half was a cash bond of 7,500 euros paid by another daughter, Claire Smith.

Extradition sought

A detective sergeant told the bail hearing on Thursday that Irish police were concerned Mr Adams had fled one jurisdiction and that one of the charges he faces is rape which carries a possible life sentence.

But giving evidence, Mr Adams said he had gone voluntarily both to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) on Belfast's Grosvenor Road and to Irish police in Sligo.

He is due to appear before a criminal court in Dublin next Wednesday.

Mr Adams was arrested earlier on Thursday at a Dublin police station, under a European arrest warrant which was issued by the Serious Organised Crime Agency on Wednesday.

He was then taken a short distance to the High Court for an extradition hearing.

A detective sergeant told the court that Mr Adams extradition warrant related to 18 alleged offences.

He said Mr Adams had told him he would plead not guilty.

The PSNI is seeking his extradition from the Irish Republic.

It is not the first time he has turned himself in.

In December, he entered a police station in County Sligo in the Irish Republic, but he could not be legally detained without a warrant.

Mr Adams was due to appear in court in Northern Ireland in November 2008 to face 23 charges relating to the alleged abuse, but he failed to show up.

The Sinn Fein leader, who has known about the allegations for over 20 years, has come under pressure to explain why he did not do more to prevent his brother from working with children while the claims were investigated.

Speaking after the arrest warrant was issued, a Sinn Fein spokesman said: "It is our view that this should have happened before now.

"However, what is now important is that this case is placed before the courts and allowed to proceed without further delay."

Hardly surprising, when Martin McGuiness is a known MI5 tool, and the IRA a infiltrated to high levels, including in their offshoots, Real IRA,etc, by the intelligence services, hardly surprising to find an Adams family member in a paedophile situation. This appears to be an operational requirement

Of course it's not proven. I think it's a widely held view in Republican quarters. It would be an explanation for the more recent "chuckle brothers" scenario, him and Paisley, in other words.
From me..to you ... that's how this whole thing pans out, don't you think?
