Not sure what to make of this story. Has all the hallmarks of making a conspiracy tale with it. I wouldnt have batted an eyelid except that they were US personnel. Maybe just a sad freak accident.

Quote:
Woman Killed In 'Freak' Tyre Explosion

A US air force officer has been killed when a tyre exploded inside her sports car while she was on holiday in Scotland.

Captain Jenna Wilcox, 27, was on a break with her husband when the freak accident happened.

It is believed the couple had changed the wheel after noticing a bulge in the tyre.

They replaced it with the car's space saver tyre but could not fit the full size one in the boot of their BMW Z3 car because because of their luggage.

Instead, Capt Wilcox, of the 100th Civil Engineer Squadron based at RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, sat with it on her lap in the passenger seat.

She died at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh on Thursday night, five days later.

Her 27-year-old husband Scott, also a captain in the air force with 48th Civil Engineer Squadron, suffered minor injuries in the explosion.

It is not known what caused the tyre to explode around 6pm last Saturday in Dalkeith, Midlothian.

A police spokesman said: "Inquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of explosion, however this would appear to have been a tragic accident."

The couple, both US citizens, had driven to Scotland in their own car.

They had recently returned from tours in Afghanistan where they worked in different locations with provincial reconstruction teams rebuilding bridges, schools and other structures.

Colonel Chad Manske, 100th Air Refueling Wing commander, said: "We are deeply saddened by this tragedy.

"Jenna was a valued member of our team and her untimely death touches all the personnel at the surrounding bases.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family, friends and co-workers during this difficult time."
