British troops based in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan are
to come under US operational command in a move publicly welcomed by
defence chiefs today but likely to provoke mixed feelings among
veterans of the conflict.
The decision will immediately affect about 8,000 British troops.
Helmand, the most dangerous province in Afghanistan, has been regarded
as very much a British responsibility...........

Around 8,000 British troops will come under US command in Helmand
province in Afghanistan, it was announced yesterday.
The soldiers, battling hardcore Taliban forces, will be led by the US
Marine Corps' Maj Gen Richard Mills.
It is part of a restructuring of Nato forces with command and control
in southern Afghanistan split in two. The UK's Maj Gen Nicjk Carter
will now oversee Kandahar.....
