Day 1 of ToryDems - fewer immigrants, more war and a "Freedom Bill"

0921 12 May - As part of the deal the Lib Dems have agreed to accept Conservative plans to replace the Trident nuclear weapons system, something they'd vehemently opposed until now. They've also agreed to the Tory cap on immigrants coming to the UK from outside the EU, and shelved their own plans for an amnesty for some illegal immigrants already here. - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/election2010/liveevent/

1017 12 May - The new National Security Council - a commitment in the Conservative manifesto - is to meet for first time later today to discuss Afghanistan, says Mr Hague. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/election2010/liveevent/

"We will create a National Security Council to oversee all aspects of our security, chaired by the Prime Minister. We are committed to succeeding in our mission in Afghanistan and will not leave our Forces without the resources they need to fulfil this goal." - Conservative Party Manifesto

Afternoon of 12 May - Text of Liberal-Conservative Agreement emerges

The text includes:

10. Civil liberties
The parties agree to implement a full programme of measures to reverse the substantial erosion of civil liberties under the Labour Government and roll back state intrusion.

This will include:

- A Freedom or Great Repeal Bill.

- The scrapping of ID card scheme, the National Identity register, the next generation of biometric passports and the Contact Point Database.

- Outlawing the finger-printing of children at school without parental permission.

- The extension of the scope of the Freedom of Information Act to provide greater transparency.

- Adopting the protections of the Scottish model for the DNA database.

- The protection of historic freedoms through the defence of trial by jury.

- The restoration of rights to non-violent protest.

- The review of libel laws to protect freedom of speech.

- Safeguards against the misuse of anti-terrorism legislation.

- Further regulation of CCTV.

- Ending of storage of internet and email records without good reason.

- A new mechanism to prevent the proliferation of unnecessary new criminal offences.

"Terrorism remains a major threat to our country and some of the biggest threats to our security do not come from abroad – they are home grown. A Conservative government will ban any organisations which advocate hate or the violent overthrow of our society, such as Hizb-ut-Tahrir, and close down organisations which attempt to fund terrorism from the UK." - Conservative Party Manifesto

1714, 12 May - Baroness Warsi is to become Conservative Party chairman. She will be part of the cabinet - the first Muslim woman ever to hold such a senior political position. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/election2010/liveevent/

2050, 12 May - The National Security Council has met in Downing Street, the BBC learns. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/election2010/liveevent/

It was old tory boy Michael Howard that initiated the ID card scheme when they were still in power.

Blair said that he wasn't going to waste money on the ID card back before he was elected.

7/7 happened. Then they get bandied about everywhere since.

Perhaps another false flag is needed.

Well, until that happens it seems "Identity fraud" seems to be the latest excuse for OTT demands for your identity.

That's through direct experience with a B&B and my bank (though not my own branch). The latter interrogated me for an hour despite having my (expired) passport, birth certificate, debit cards of both accounts, cheque books, national insurance number, enhanced disclosure, and answered the security questions correctly, including direct debits and recent transactions. Only thing I didn't do was hand em my car keys to the car parked just outside the window, and with each passing minute I felt more and more like the protagonist (played by Sandra Bullock) in 'The Net'. (Worth watching, it's partly about stolen ID)

The interrogation took place around a couple of transactions - I couldn't remember exactly what I'd bought at the supermarket down to the last penny, and in hindsight, I'd bought my broadband dongle on a particular day using my debit card but activated the dongle two days later. I refused to leave until it was sorted, but the whole time the refrain of "Identity theft" was used by both members of staff.

Later my mum had the same problem withdrawing a sum of money. She had her passport, but could only withdraw an x amount with it. She needed to withdraw more but was asked to go home and get some more evidence of ID. (My thoughts on that are that the banks are just reluctant to part with your money right now).

It seems that in the absence of an ID card, the only hassle-free, acceptable ID is the new photo driving license, and/or the new chipped passport.

And if you have neither...?
