McDonnell warns delegates of leadership vote 'stitch-up'

Public-sector union activists gave a rousing reception on Wednesday to left Labour MP John McDonnell's defiant declaration to stand for leadership of his party.
Despite attempts by what Mr McDonnell berated as "the old Stalinist-style hierarchy" in the party to stitch up the ballot process in favour of new Labour candidates, the progressive London MP vowed before delegates at the PCS union conference in Brighton to offer a radical alternative in the leadership election.
Mr McDonnell pledged to stand with trade unionists "on the picket line and in Parliament" and insisted that he was standing to fight for progressive policies including "the right of workers to not have bosses interfere in their strike ballots."
But as fellow left-wing MP John Cruddas ruled himself out of contention, denouncing the Labour Party for trying to "stage-manage the election," Mr McDonnell warned that "it will be extremely difficult for me to even get on the ballot.
"The old bureaucracy and the old Stalinist-style hierarchy have tainted the democratic process and are demanding 33 MPs' names to get on the ballot - with nominations opening Monday and closing Thursday, at the same time that the Queen's speech will be heard in Parliament," he explained.
"This gives MPs no time to consult their constituency Labour parties on the election, curtails the nomination process drastically and discredits the election right from the start.
"But at least democracy in the Labour Party has moved on from the bizarre spectacle in 2007 of only having one name on the ballot paper - to having one family on the ballot paper this year," he joked, referring to the brothers Ed and David Miliband, who have announced their candidacies.
Mr McDonnell insisted, however, that "although this stitch-up may well keep me off the ballot I urge Labour Party members to cry out for democracy and demand our voice is heard.".............

Whatever labour party MPs and members may profess to believe, given the acquiescence to the policies of the last 13 years, their views have no substance whatsoever. They should have burned their cards long ago.
Did I see that Norman Baker has some minor ministerial role in the Lib Con coalition? Crikey!

Yes indeed. But that's suggesting isn't it that the Labour MPs depend on the soul of a purposefully dead leader to act their proper selves. Give them a Blair, a Brown , a Milliband, they're succoured away to evil. They have no personal identity other than that of the party.
That's what bothers me about Baker, apparently with some insight into the Kelly murder, apparently ensconced with this new 'instrument of change' coalition

Yes - but that just casts the entire rest of the Parliamentary party since that time as empty acquiescent sheep, apart from maybe Cook, who when he eventually and at long last found his reason for being there, suffered the same fate. That seems to be the case
Still you can't rely on or mourn heroes, you have to have consciousness.Superficially Clameregg has a bit of that at the moment, but it'll soon disperse
