Kelly Inquest Now Imperative by Sam Greenhill Daily Mail Dec 29th 2010
10 questions the inquiry couldn't answer:
1 could Dr Kelly have suffered sufficient blood loss through the severed artery in his left wrist to cause death? The campaigning doctors say the small artery would have clotted before enough blood lost.
2)Why was so little blood found on the ground where the body was found, as would be expected if the blood had not clotted? Detective constable Graham Coe who attended the scene, says 'I certainly didn't see a lot of blood anywhere. There was some on his left wrist but it wasn't on his clothes”
3)could Dr Kelly have cut his wrist in the way described bt the hutton report? Dr Mal Pedersen, a close friend, says a long term injury to his right hand left Dr Kelly unable even to cut steak with it and he had to perform this action clumsily with his left hand.
4)Was the very small amount of co-proxamol found in Dr Kelly blood sufficient to contribute to death? Doctors say the dose does not correspond with the volume of opened packets of the drug found on his body.
5)Why does the death certificate say:”found dead at Harrowdown Hill, Longworth, Oxon.' normally such documents would not say 'found at' does this mean as some witnesses have claimed, that Dr Kelly's body had been moved?
6)Why were Dr Kelly's colleagues warned to stay away from his funeral?
7)Why was the wallpaper at Dr Kelly's home allegedly stripped by police in the hours after he was reported missing, but before his body was found?
8)Why did a police helicopter with heat seeking equipment fail to detect Dr Kelly despite flying over the exact spot where his body was found by a search party less than six hours later?
9)Why did the Lord Chancellor Lord Falconer , Tony Blair's former flatmate, use an obscure law to order the initial inquest to be adjourned indefinitely?
10)Why were no fingerprints found on the knife with which Dr Kelly allegedly killed himself, even though he wore no gloves?
Doctors campaigning for a proper inquest into Dr Kelly have released a 33 page report they submitted to attorney general, Dominic Grieve in the hope it will help him to resist any political interference and make his decision purely on legal grounds.
Mr Grieve who in opposition, privately expressed doubts about the Kelly case to at least one fellow MP has been considering the docs case since sept and is expected to announce early in 2011 whether there is sufficient new evidence to apply to the high court for an inquest into the controversial death.
World renowned weapons inspector, Dr Kelly is said to have killed himself after being named as the source of a BBC report accusing the Blair Govt. of lying to take Britain into war.
Uniquely for an unexpected death such as his, no coroner's inquest has ever been held. Instead, a public inquiry into his death chaired by lord hutton found that he killed himself after slashing his wrist with a blunt knife and overdosing on painkillers.
However there are many suspicious circumstances that cast doubts on this verdict.
The five docs led by radiologist Stephen frost, argue that lord hutton, who devoted only half a day of his 24 day inquiry to medical evidence and did not have statutory powers to require cross-examination of witnesses – was not in a position to fulfil the duties of a coroner.
Former coroner Dr Michael Poers QC, representing the docs, said their report set out in the clearest and most powerful terms yet why the hutton inquiry into Dr Kelly's 2003 death was not an adequate substitute for the 'full' frank and fearless' investigation required by coroners guidelines.
Dr Powers said:'this legal document sets out details of the insufficiency and irregularities of lord Huttons informal inquiry which, in our opinion, make argument for a proper unanswerable'.
The report says there is serious doubt that sufficient evidence was available at the time of the hastily conducted inquiry to reach the conclusion that Dr Kelly killed himself, while scrutiny of medical evidence was 'unacceptably limp'.
The doctors insist the recent publication of a post-mortem report has not laid to rest key questions.
