Denmark arrests 4 suspects over planned attack

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) -- Denmark's intelligence service on Wednesday arrested four people suspected of planning an "imminent" terror attack against a newspaper that printed the controversial Prophet Muhammad cartoons.
The Danish Security and Intelligence Service, known as PET, said three of the four men were residents of Sweden and had entered the country during the night of Tuesday to Wednesday.
Jakob Scharf, the head of PET, said that "an imminent terror attack has been foiled." He described some the suspects as "militant Islamists."
PET said the group was planning to enter the building where the Jyllands-Posten daily has its Copenhagen newsdesk and had wanted "to kill as many of the people present as possible."
Scharf said the arrests were made after close cooperation with Swedish police.
The three suspects living in Sweden were identified as a 44-year-old Tunisian citizen, a 29-year-old Lebanese-born man and a 30-year-old Swedish resident whose origin was not immediately known. One of the suspects was a 26-year-old Iraqi asylum seeker living in Copenhagen.
The four men face preliminary charges of attempting to carry out an act of terrorism. They will face a custody hearing Thursday.

The four men arrested in Denmark were a 44-year-old Tunisian, a 29-year-old Swede born in Lebanon, a 30-year-old Swede and a 26-year-old Iraqi asylum seeker.
The first three men all lived in Sweden and travelled to Denmark overnight, the PET statement said.
According to PET, the man arrested in Stockholm was a 37-year-old Swede of Tunisian background.
Scharf said several of the suspects could be described "as militant Islamists with connections to international terror networks."
"The arrests underscore the serious terror threat against Denmark and especially against institutions and people connected to the cartoon case," he added.
Saepo spokeswoman Katarina Sevcik said "the arrested people have up to now no known connection to the events of December 11."
On that day, a man blew himself up near a busy shopping street in central Stockholm, killing only himself in Sweden's first suicide bombing.
Jyllands-Posten published a dozen cartoons in 2005 of the Prophet Mohammed that triggereed violent and sometimes deadly protests around the world. |

Intelligence agency PET has arrested four men on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack against the Copenhagen of Jyllands-Posten newspaper.
According to the agency, the arrests were made in suburban Copenhagen and were made following a long-term surveillance operation in collaboration with the Swedish law-enforcement agency SÄPO.
Three of the suspects are Swedish residents and reportedly arrived in Denmark last night, and PET said the attack was to be carried out “in the coming days”.
All four suspects have Middle-Eastern or North African backgrounds.
In addition to the arrests in Copenhagen, Swedish officials arrested a fifth suspect in Stockholm at the same time.
During the arrests, Danish police found an assault rifle and silencer, ammunition, as well as plastic strips, which are often used by police as hand restraints.
According to PET, the group planned to kill as many people as possible in the building that houses Jyllands-Posten.
Jakob Scharf, head of PET, described the suspects as “militant Islamists that had connections to international terror networks”.

PET says those arrested were in the process of preparing an attack against a newspaper, which the service says was the Jyllands-Posten and Politiken offices in Copenhagen. According to PET, the attack was imminent, and police discovered strips, a machine gun and silencer and ammunition during searches of arrestee premises.
“Several of the suspects, who can be described as militant isIamists with connections to international terrorist networks, were planning to attempt entry into JP/Politiken premises in Copenhagen and kill as many of those present as possible,” PET says in its news release.
The JP/Politiken premises are located on the main town hall square Rådhuspladsen in the centre of Copenhagen.
The arrests took place in the Copenhagen suburb of Herlev and in Greve south of Copenhagen, according to a PET news release. Three of the five arrested are reported to have arrived in Denmark overnight Wednesday in a Toyota rented from a petrol station in Kitsa near Stockholm, according to ekstrabladet.dk.
Investigation leading to the arrests has been carried out in close cooperation with the Swedish Security Police SÄPO.
Three of those arrested live in Sweden – a 44 year-old Tunisian national, a 29-year-old Swedish national born in Lebanon and a 30-year-old Swedish national.
The last of the four lives in Denmark and is a 26 year-old Iranian asylum-seeker.
A fifth person, a 37-year-old Swedish national of Tunisian origin, was arrested by Swedish authorities in Stockholm.
“The arrests show the serious nature of the terrorist threat targeted at Denmark and particularly institutions and people connected to the cartoon issue,” says PET Chief Jakob Scharff.
PET does not rule out further arrests in connection with the ongoing investigation, but says the attack concerned has been avoided for now.
Denmark’s Justice Minister Lars Barfoed (Cons) says the group’s plan to kill as many people as possible is probably the most serious attempted terrorist attack hitherto in Denmark.
“Today’s arrests confirm that there are people who want to carry out terrorist attacks against Denmark and Danish interests. We have to accept that unfortunately. At the same time I would like to stress that the authorities are well-prepared to face the serious terrorism threat that Denmark faces,” Barfoed says in a written comment to the national news agency Ritzau.

The planned terror attacks is PET's perception averted as a result of arrests and the case does not lead to a changed assessment of the terror threat against Denmark, adding PET.
PET continues investigations into the matter in cooperation with Copenhagen Western Zodiac Police and the relevant Swedish authorities.
Perhaps more arrests
"It can not be excluded that in connection with the continuing investigation of the case will be no further arrests," said PET in the press release.
PET will hold a brief news conference at. 17.00, where PET chief Jakob Scharf and head of Sapo, Anders Danielsson, will report on the arrests.
According to the Swedish security police, there is no connection between those arrests and terror case in Stockholm earlier this month.
Not the first JP-terror plans
It is not the first time that terrorists have considered invading Jyllands-Posten and murder loose in the corridors.
In October 2009 police arrested in Chicago on 50-year-old David Headley, who has since confessed that he was planning an armed attack on Jyllands-Posten.
Since Headley and his militant support base in Pakistan meditated on their bloody plot, had CNN housed at Kongens Nytorv. And it was supposed that the terrorists had beheaded the employees and throw their heads out of windows editors - down on Kongens Nytorv.
The attack was to be a copy of the terrorist attack in Mumbai in 2008. Here shot and blasted terrorists 167 people killed. |

GLOSTRUP, Denmark (Reuters) - Three men suspected of preparing a deadly attack on a newspaper were charged by a Danish court on Thursday with plotting an act of terrorism.
Police detained four men in Denmark and one in Sweden on Wednesday on suspicion of planning an armed assault on the offices of Jyllands-Posten, the newspaper that outraged Muslims in 2005 with cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad.
One of those held in Denmark was released and the man arrested in Sweden was remanded in custody by a Swedish court.
The three charged were a 44-year-old Tunisian and two Swedish citizens aged 29 and 30.
Lykke Sorensen, an official of the Danish Security and Intelligence Service, told reporters at Glostrup courthouse the three, who arrived in Denmark from Sweden late on Tuesday, denied the charges.
They were also accused of illegally possessing weapons, Sorensen said.
The plot further raised fears in the Nordic region after an unsuccessful bomb attack in Stockholm earlier this month, although authorities in Sweden and Denmark have not raised alert levels.
The suspects in Denmark will stay in custody for four weeks.
In Sweden, prosecutors must present their case by January 13 against the 37-year-old Swedish citizen held there. The man released in Denmark was a 26-year-old Iraqi asylum-seeker. Sorensen said he remained a suspect.
"The investigation will continue in close cooperation between the police, the PET and (Swedish security police) SAPO," Sorensen told reporters.
"MUMBAI STYLE ATTACK"
The cartoons provoked violent protests against Danish and European interests in the Middle East, Africa and Asia in which at least 50 people were killed.
The furore over the caricatures, including one of the Prophet with a turban resembling a bomb, has led to several plots against the paper, cartoonists and other journalists involved.
Danish security police chief Jakob Scharf had said the arrests prevented an imminent attack aimed to kill as many as possible at the newspaper's offices.
He said the plotters were probably a militant Islamist group with links to international terrorist networks and described the plot as a "Mumbai-style" attack.
In 2008, Pakistani gunmen killed 166 people in a three-day raid on landmarks in the Indian city, including two hotels and a Jewish center.
Zubair Hussain, spokesman for the Muslim Council of Denmark representing more than 30,000 of the estimated 200,000 Muslims in the country, condemned the plotters' plans.
"As Danish Muslims, we feel it is important to say that this has nothing to do with Islam," he said. "We are all victims in this case. No one will ask before they blow something in the air, or before they shoot, 'are you Muslim or non-Muslim?'"
Swedish police began tracking three of the suspects in Sweden before they entered Denmark on the night of December 28, Danish and Swedish security officials said.
Without giving a source for its information, a Swedish paper said SAPO had a tracking device on the suspects' car.
Swedish police said the plot had no known links to the December 11 bomb blasts in Stockholm. |

STOCKHOLM — One of five men held over a foiled plot to massacre staff at a Danish newspaper had twice been arrested abroad suspected of terror links, the foreign ministry and media said Friday.
Munir Awad, a 29-year-old Swede born in Lebanon, had publicly thanked the Swedish secret service, Saepo, for obtaining his release from Somalia where he was detained three years ago.
"We know Saepo brought us home and we are very grateful," he told a newspaper at the time.
Swedish foreign ministry spokesman Anders Joerle confirmed the previous arrests and that Sweden had intervened on Awad's behalf.
"Awad was arrested in Somalia by Ethiopian troops. That was in 2007. He was arrested in Pakistan in 2009," foreign ministry spokesman Anders Joerle told AFP.
"The Swedish foreign ministry helped them. I wouldn't say to free him, but what we did was insist that he either should be tried or set free," he added.
Awad was one of five men arrested in Denmark and Sweden on Wednesday for hatching what Danish officials called a plan to "kill as many people as possible" in an assault on the Jyllands-Posten daily.
The paper published in September 2005 a dozen cartoons of the Muslim prophet that triggered violent and sometimes deadly protests around the world.
A Stockholm court identified one man arrested in the Swedish capital as Sahbi Zalouti, a 37-year-old Swede of Tunisian origin. He was on Thursday remanded in custody for two weeks.
Joerle told AFP Friday that Zalouti had been arrested in Pakistan last year for entering the country illegally but that it remained unclear if he was connected to Awad.
Danish intelligence agency PET has identified the only man based in Denmark as a 26-year-old Iraqi asylum seeker living in the Copenhagen suburb of Greve. The man, identified by media as Abdullah Muhammed Salman, was freed Thursday but is still suspected of being connected to the plot.
The three men arrested in another suburb of Copenhagen were all based in Sweden and had driven to the Danish capital overnight Tuesday. They have been remanded in custody for four weeks by a Danish court.
PET has not provided their names, but media has identified them as Awad, 44-year-old Tunisian Mounir Dhahri and 30-year-old Swede Omar Abdalla Aboelazm.
When Awad was arrested in Somalia in 2007, he was travelling with his then 17-year-old pregnant wife Safia Benaouda, who is the daughter of the head of Sweden's Muslim Council Helena Benaouda, Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet reported.
Awad told the paper in a previous interview the couple had been tortured and interrogated there before Swedish intelligence agency Saepo helped free them.
When he was arrested in Pakistan in August 2009, Awad was traveling with Benaouda and their then two-year-old son, as well as with Mehdi Ghezali, a Swede who had spent two years in Guantanamo Bay, Joerle said.
The Aftonbladet daily meanwhile reported Awad was also connected to two Swedes of Somali origin found guilty by a Swedish court earlier this month of "planning terrorist crimes" in Somalia and sentenced to four years in prison.
Awad, the paper reported, had shared an apartment in Stockholm with the two men, Mohamoud Jama, 22, and Bille Ilias Mohamed, 26, who are members of the Islamist movement Al-Shebab.
The Somali Islamist militia has declared allegiance to Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network and controls most of southern and central Somalia.
Jyllands-Posten and Swedish tabloid Expressen reported Friday that David Headley, who helped plan the 2008 Mumbai attacks and had reportedly been preparing several attacks in the Danish capital, had been in contact with a businessman in Stockholm over the plot.
The businessman may have been the mastermind behind the foiled operation, the reports said. |
