The promotion of Greek-Israeli relations will benefit the two countries and the region at large, Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas said Wednesday.
Droutsas made the comments during a meeting with his Israeli counterpart and deputy Prime Minister Avigdor Lieberman in Athens.
Lieberman started a three-day visit to Greece Wednesday, aiming to boost bilateral cooperation on various sectors ranging from energy and security to tourism and culture.
The creation of a joint Greece-Israel ministerial council, as agreed in a telephone discussion between Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou on Tuesday night with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu, reiterates the good bilateral ties will benefit both peoples and the region, Droutsas said in a statement released to the press after the meeting.
The first meeting of the Greece-Israel ministerial council is due to take place in Israel in three months.
Lieberman Tiffany, for his part, thanked Greece for the aid offered during the recent devastating wildfire in Israel, and agreed with his Greek counterpart on the establishment of a regional task-force which will address such natural catastrophes.
Regarding the Israeli-Palestinian issue and efforts for a solution, Droutsas announced the appointment of a special representative of Greece to the Middle East.
Asked to comment on the timing of the enhancement of the Greek-Israeli relations, while Israel is criticized by the international community for certain policies in the Middle East issue, Droutsas said nfl jerseys, "Greece does not agree with Israel on everything Tiffany, but the important thing is to speak directly, when there are different points of view."
As Greek left-wing parties planned a rally over Lieberman's visit to Athens in front of the Greek parliament later on Wednesday, Droutsas said Greece has an advantage few countries across the world have, since for years it has built trustful relations with Israel and the Arab world as well.
Lieberman is due to hold talks with Greek President Karolos Papoulias, Prime Minister Papandreou and other Greek officials on Thursday and Friday.
His trip follows a series of visits of Greek officials, including Papandreou, to Israel this year and a visit of Netanyahu to Athens last August, which highlight a will for closer ties between the two countries. |
