Man shoots himself after 15-hour standoff

LONDON — A man is being treated by paramedics in Luton after shooting himself at the end of a sixteen-hour stand-off with police.
Bedfordshire Police said the man was still being treated by paramedics on Leagrave Common in north Luton, after bystanders heard a gunshot at around midday.
"At the moment this is a fast moving situation and the man involved in this incident is being treated at the scene," a police spokeswoman said.
The man had held a sawn-off shotgun to his chin and fired, according to eyewitnesses. Police said one marksman may have also have fired a shot during the confrontation.
The man had been stopped by armed officers on the area of parkland between Sundon Park Road and Henge Way at around 8.30 on Sunday night, after a member of the public called 999 to report a man carrying a gun. He had remained on the Common surrounded by armed police and specialist negotiators all night before shooting himself.
A large police cordon remains around the park.
"We will be debriefing all the officers involved," said the police spokeswoman. "Until this is completed we will not be able to make any further comment on the situation."
